Redskins OTAs
Lets look at some news and notes about these OTAs.
Washington Redskins' Alex Smith makes strong, steady first impression - Washington Redskins Blog- ESPN Cousins and Smith may be close in stats, but def different on the field. When Cousins completed a long pass in practice...he was celebrating it. Alex makes the throw, expects a completion, then moves on to the next play. Keim said in another post that he expects Smith's approach maybe to go a little farther in the lockerroom. Smith is all business right now getting into the playbook, fun will come later. https://redskinswire.usatoday.com/2018/05/24/matt-ioannidis-rotating-first-team-defense-redskins-otas/ Allen - Payne - McGee with Ioannidis as first in rotating. Sounds right and Payne in there at nose first. Good. Redskins OTA observations: Let's all get excited about Derrius Guice | Redskins XTRA | richmond.com With linebacker Zach Brown absent, the staff gave the second starting spot to Josh Harvey-Clemons, and are clearly hoping for big things in his second year. --Likewise, at cornerback, Orlando Scandrick got plenty of work in opposite Josh Norman, with Quinton Dunbar becoming the third cornerback in nickel situations. Scandrick can also play slot corner, so view that as a fluid situation at the moment I also read a couple things about Richardson and Quinn...all positive. WR is gonna be an interesting bag...Im just hoping for health in that group when the season opens. |

Doctson needs to make a big jump forward this year

If he doesn't have a good camp, don't expect Gruden to play him as a starter just because he's a first round pick. Doctson needs a strong, HEALTHY camp. |
Re: Redskins OTAs
I just don't see Doc being a true WR1, he's a solid WR2 IMO
|
Re: Redskins OTAs
He’s definitely got the skills to be a #1, he just needs to prove it now

P Rich has been stealing the show apparently, Kein said "His impact has been felt" Good to hear

and im 100% sure this isnt the same type of show stealing pryor was doing last year..... woohoo |
Re: Redskins OTAs
Far be it for me to say but once Alex Smith gets comfortable here with the sysytem and his teammates - i honestly think this team will be better off

His speed should help open things up underneath for Reed, Crowder, etc |

could turn out to be one of the biggest signing league wide this dude is gonna kill it for us and A.S. know how to throw the deep ball |
Re: Redskins OTAs
Pryor could not get separation, PR won't have that issue

What makes Doctson a "solid" WR2? He hasn't done Jack Schnitt in the NFL. We homer fans have him w-a-a-a-y overrated. |

His ability to make tough catches like he has done, but his knock is can he stay healthy |
Re: Redskins OTAs

i think he needs to improve his routes, improve on getting separation better, which he isnt the fastest guy -- his "spectacular catch" rating would be high in madden 12 ...... |
Re: Redskins OTAs
Doctson’s speed is just fine, 4.5 for a guy his size is very good

I don't remember any real tough contested catch from Doctson last season... I remember 2 dropped TDs though. |
Re: Redskins OTAs
lol easy to remember the negatives
|

It sure is, in his case. Like the way smaller DB's easily jam his routes at the LOS. He might get better at route running and he might get physically stronger but will he ever be tough enough to become a legitimate NFL starter? I thought he was the best WR in the draft when he came out of college. Now I think he might not not make it in this league. |

The seattle game winner? The jump ball in the EZ against Dallas? |
Re: Redskins OTAs
lol yea i remember him making some good catches for sure.. And i do think he will continue to improve, he's been hampered by injuries and still learning im sure... he can get a little more physical and build up that aspect of his game, sure, but not every WR that turns out to be good to solid is a world beater the first few years. So my patience is just fine with Josh
|
Re: Redskins OTAs
Doctson has shown the ability for sure....its about being consistent now.
The one play that sticks out was the throw to him in the Kansas City game.....god, that catch would have been top 3 in the league last year. His athleticism to get up for it at an unbelievable catch angle.....he couldn't stick the landing. Man I wanted to cry...game winner-almost |

I'm sorry but these are pretty catches, not tough contested catches. The one against Seattle is a nice diving catch, the one against the Boys is a nice jump ball, but in both cases he's untouched. So yeah, I know he can make good catches, but I can't remember a true wowing tough contested catch... The one against KC would've been amazing... I just re-watched one late in the 2nd against the Broncos he absolutely should've caught in the endzone, perfect throw in a tight window by Cousins, untouched, drops it... I'm not saying he doesn't have the potential, I just haven't seen much of it so far. EDIT: watched some random 2017 Doctson highlights , a part from a nice one against the Saints, and another one against the Raiders that I had forgotten, I don't think he has proved yet that he can make crazy catches at the NFL level. Hope he does this year. |

Since Garcon left, we haven't thrown quick slants to WR's. Cooley has said on the radio that KC does not throw Doctson jumpballs in practice, he runs the offense exactly like game day. Doctson needs to work on these things to execute them in the game. For whatever reason, KC did not throw Slants, Fades or back shoulder balls. These are all critical throws and keeps drives alive but it wasn't a part of our system. I'm hopeful the addition of AS is going to give Doctson a big boost. BTW, F...Kirk Cousins! |

Oh if they deliver I won't be one to b*tch about last year's dropped balls... And I sure hope Doctson makes a huge step forward! |
Re: Redskins OTAs
I can't help to think that maybe some of Kirk's game, especially last year, was all about padding the numbers, less about helping these guys get developed. When Favre was playing, the dude went after it. If it got picked, it got picked, but he wasn't afraid to break in a new receiver.

Re: Redskins OTAs
A catch can still be tough whether it’s “contested” or not. Tracking a deep ball and fully laying out for it sure isn’t easy.

Not denying he made some nice catches, just saying I wouldn't grant Doctson a tough catcher WR, because IMO he hasn't proven that yet. Too many drops for too few catches. |

I'm not trying to make excuses for him but those catches are harder to do when you only get 1 target a quarter. He needs to earn a bigger role in our game plan or GTFO. It's been long enough. |
Re: Redskins OTAs
Reed? Doctson? Who are they?

Again, I hope he finally does! |
Re: Redskins OTAs

I don't think he has the skills to be a 1. To me he plays too soft, doesn't seem to play witb any intensity. He's really good at jump balls but that's about it. If it's 3rd and 7 and we need a go to guy to make a tough catch it ain't Doc. That guy was Garcon. |

So you think Smith is going to be a gunslinger? He might be more conservative that Cousins was. |

Re: Redskins OTAs
Matt Ioannidis was 5th in the NFL on Pass rush pressures for a DT,
I think we have forgotten about him in the mix as well. |

Re: Redskins OTAs
Doc is coming into his third year. WR is one of the toughest positions to transition from college to pro. Sure, a handful of WR's are day 1 ready. Most take a couple years to develop.
I am not ready to pass judgment on Doc yet. After this year, if he fails to produce, fine, I will not object when folks say he is soft or not a No. 1. He made some hard catches and did not shy away from contact as far as I could tell. I don't know if KC wasn't comfortable with him or if Doctson really just wasn't doing his job. Let's see if Smith / Richardson make a difference. |
Re: Redskins OTAs
So, youtube had a couple videos of all of Doctson's targets in the Denver and Saints game.
In the Saints' game, he had 4 catches on 7 targets. Of the three non-catches, he got his hands on one but couldn't pull it in, the other two were on Cousins. In the Denver game he had 2 catches on 13 targets. Of the non-catches, the vast majority (at least 6) were just bad throws by KC. Three were ones he should have caught with one being a very tough but makeable catch. Nothing in the videos, however, show a "soft" receiver. He ran over the middle without hesitation and consistently contested balls in the air (in one, he almost turned a certain interception in the end zone into a TD). When close, and whether he caught it or not, he would lay out and take the pounding in the attempt. In addition, on several of KC's misses, Doc was open and KC just either underthrew or overthrew him (in one Doc had beaten double coverage deep and KC just threw it behind him, two yards in front and it's a TD). It was only two games but I didn't see anything in them that would cause me to believe he is lacking the skills or the will needed to be a No. 1 WR in the league. At this point, I expect a big leap from last year. He had a full year of being healthy after missing all but two games his rookie year. In addition, I am admittedly buying into the company line that KC really didn't take many chances downfield with him (although he did force the ball into a couple double coverages in an attempt to give Doc a chance, I think he was about 50/50 on those). All this is to say that, if I was to bet on it, I'd bet we see very significant improvement in his numbers this year. |
