Coronavirus (non political)
Is anyone starting to get a little worried?

The state currently has only about 200 test kits, an "inadequate" number, but has been in "constant contact with federal agencies" that will be sending a significant number of new test kits in coming days, Newsom said. Twelve of these 14 cases were related to travel to China, and two cases occurred through person-to-person transmission to close household contacts of a person with confirmed COVID-19. An additional 39 cases were reported among repatriated U.S. citizens, residents, and their families returning from Hubei province, China (three), and from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was docked in Yokohama, Japan (36). Thus, there have been 53 cases within the United States. No deaths have been reported in the United States. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6908e1.htm - How does it spread Person-to-person spread The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. If anyone wants to talk about it (just no politics or blaming please)
I personally am not that worried but I cant help but feel like Im in the beginning scenes of a post apocalypse movie. I guess the saving grace is that is apparently only killing old people, so theres that. Im starting to get a little worried. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
Thanks for starting this. I also agree this should not devolve into a political show.
As for the virus, the longer the US can keep it from making a "beachhead" in the US, the better we are. Even though a vaccine is probably a year away, our doctors will learn a lot from the outbreaks in Italy and South Korea, where we will get honest data. As more information is learned, more detailed understanding of how the transmission and incubation periods, we should give doctors and hospitals more understanding of how to identify it and enact proper precautions. Overall, I think it could be a bad - right now it has around a 4% mortality rate, but mainly for elderly, and I think that most of those were inside of China. US, European, and SKorean medical care and infection control procedures are many steps above the Chinese equivalent. When the Ebola scare happened I worked for a company that cleaned hospital privacy curtains. We had several immediate orders for isolation cleans. Since then Infection control in hospitals has become one of the single most important areas of Hospital administration. That bodes well for containing any outbreaks that may occur. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
This shit always starts in China and u really can’t trust the data coming from them.
The outbreak in Iran sounds really bad, they def don’t have the resources for a quality response. And the fact like their health minister was on tv and was sick with it...not a real tight ship being run over. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
Definitely getting concerned. Scary stuff. Every day it seems to pop up in a different country.

Three days later police paid him a visit and told him to stop. He returned to work and caught the virus from a patient. I am really surprised how harshly the market is reacting to this virus. If I were to be worried about coronavirus, it would be because I wonder what they are hearing that we aren't.

Hong Kong (AFP) - All pets of people in Hong Kong infected with the coronavirus will be quarantined, with one dog already in isolation, the city's authorities said Friday.
The move is the first reported case anywhere in the world of a government quarantining pets over the outbreak and was prompted by a positive test in the pet of an infected patient. The canine has been placed in quarantine for 14 days as a precaution but has no "relevant symptoms", Hong Kong officials said Friday. "Nasal and oral cavity samples tested weak positive for COVID-19," a government spokesman said without explaining why they tested the animal in the first place. Something to think about...
@AnandWrites Coronavirus makes clear what has been true all along. Your health is as safe as that of the worst insured, worst cared for person in your society. It will be decided by the height of the floor, not the ceiling. |

Not trying to get political but as someone who comes in daily contact with those that are underinsured or not insured at all you can’t help but be concerned.

I would be a lot more concerned if I worked at my old dealership. No sick leave whatsoever, so if someone there got it they would absolutely bring it to work. Fortunately the county offers sick leave so I'm less concerned if someone did get sick. Even so, I work with immigrants of all kinds and it gives me something to think about. One of my coworkers got delayed coming back to work because when he left Vietnam he was stuck at an airport in China for 2 weeks thanks to the quarantine. |

I've heard different stories and to be honest I don't know. One it was man mad in China and got out of hand. I think this is closer to the truth...... "COVID-19 (2019-CoV) Wuhan coronavirus was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019. At the time of writing, numbers of infected are still on the rise, with a mortality rate of around 1 percent. Snakes were originally suspected as a potential source for the outbreak, though other experts have deemed this unlikely and proposed bats instead. As of February 2020, the search for the animal origin of COVID-19 is ongoing. https://www.sciencealert.com/coronavirus |

China close one of its new emergency hospitals
https://www.foxnews.com/health/china-closes-makeshift-hospital-cases-drop-country-increase-worldwide 202 new cases in China in one day is a good sign because it seems to suggest the virus has a lifecycle and can be contained. As cases are getting ready to increase in the US, hopefully the 2 month delay in cases hitting us will allow warmer temperatures and greater awareness to keep the overall impact much lower than if it had jumped the ocean in mid January Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
The death rate among reported coronavirus patients is now about 3.4%, a far higher percentage than previous estimates, the World Health Organization says.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's director general, also said Tuesday the virus is more lethal than the flu, which kills tens of thousands of Americans each year, but does not spread as easily. The death rate for the seasonal flu in the U.S. is far less than 1%. https://www.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-live-updates-vaccine-least-115516037.html I was listening to Elliot in the Morning and they talked about how all the shelves around the DMV are completely out of sanitizer. Really? I might understand Seattle or Chicago ... but around here? Seemed odd, I guess Ill have a look around tonight when i go grocery shopping. -------------------------- |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
I wonder what the seasonal flu rate would be without a vaccine. Note not trying to equate or deflect. Just reflecting on how we take for granted the flu shot every year, yet it serves an incredibly important role in protecting our country. (I have never gotten them except when forced by military or other job requirements, I probably will going forward.)

I get the flu shot maybe every other year. I had walking pneumonia a few years ago, sucked bc i was always tired and not 100% but never bad enough to miss time from work or life commitments, so I was thinking I had cancer or something. I didnt understand why I was so tired for months. ----------------------------------- is this the new normal? Every few years a new virus originates out of Asia, world reacts cautiously, it goes away .... but one day, will one of these viruses truly be the worst case scenario stuff you only see in movies? This is a pattern and it seems weve been fortunate so far but prob and stats say eventually we will not be lucky. ------------------------------------------------ The coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, is a frightening reminder of the imminent global threat posed by emerging infectious diseases. Although epidemics have arisen during all of human history, they now seem to be on the rise. In just the past 20 years, coronaviruses alone have caused three major outbreaks worldwide. Even more troubling, the duration between these three pandemics has gotten shorter. https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-many-epidemics-originate-asia-115841475.html ^^ this is a pretty good read on the changing landscapes and exploding human populations that are a contributor. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
The next line is a terrible statement. You can only see it if you actually quote this post:
Coronavirus should be nicknamed Darwin's Revenge because it only appears to be deadly to the weakest of the population. A thinning of the human herd so to speak on to the post https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/ from the link: PRE-EXISTING CONDITION DEATH RATE confirmed cases all cases Cardiovascular disease 13.2% 10.5% Diabetes 9.2% 7.3% Chronic respiratory disease 8.0% 6.3% Hypertension 8.4% 6.0% Cancer 7.6% 5.6% no pre-existing conditions 0.9% *Death Rate = (number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus (%). The percentages do not have to add up to 100%, as they do NOT represent share of deaths by condition. |

I always view getting a shot as me helping protect high risk groups from additional exposure. Even though I have only had the flu once in my life and not someone in a high risk profile. I would hate to think that I was responsible for getting my in-laws or an older coworker sick and hospitalized when i could have done something so simple. I think how we have been providing "free" flu shots in our country is one of the most significant things we can do. Globally flu and flu related illnesses are the number 1 infectious disease killer, |

I'm 50/50 on getting the flu shot, last time I did (2018) I got the flu like 2 months later. I've asked several nurses/GP's on the subject and they all verified that basically there's no flu shot that covers all variations, the one they give you is the one they predict will be the biggest threat to your region. So it's good at preventing the strain of the flu they predict will hit your region, but not all strains of the flu. |

Mooby, get it. It will at the minimum lessen the effects if you do get the flu, making it milder. |

Not getting a flu shot is just dumb, especially if you work closely with the public.
