WFT 2020 Training Camp

With all that happened recently we've been sucked into non-football conversations (and I'll plead guilty of engaging quite a lot about what the new name should be)...

So I figured we could enjoy some football talk in a fresh thread, let's try to keep non-football talk out of this one !

With players coming in and Training Camp scheduled to start next week, give me:

-Position you're most excited about:

DL. No brainer.

-Position you're most worried about:

LT. I know a lot of you love Saahdiq Charles, but I'm not sure he's NFL ready yet. And LT is key to Haskins development. Most of us thought we were going to sign a veteran à la Donald Penn... But it doesn't look like it, am I wrong ?

-Position battle you're most intrigued about :

CB for me. Excited to have Kendall Fuller back, I think Darby is solid, and with Moreau, Moreland and Stroman we have some young exciting talent !

-Sleeper player you think will have a big impact:

Jon Bostic. His performance last year is highly underrated IMO. Figure out a way to have Bostic, Thomas and Holcomb on the field at the same time and our front 7 looks nasty !

So you want us to bring up non-football talk lol? I kid.

I like Lucas and Charles. Don't think LT will be a position of strength but it will be serviceable.

I'm interested to see how Davis looks at FS and if we can get sufficient production out of the TE position.

Haha yeah just fixed it, I re-read before posting but... meh ^^

TE definitely is a question mark.

Re: WFT 2020 Training Camp

D-line and WR excite me.

D-line is obvious.

McLaurin, Sims, Gandy-Golden, Gibson...playmakers with a ton of speed. Such a shame about Harmon but he'll be back.

I'm worried about LT also. TE is a problem but with the number of weapons we have at WR and RB, I think we'll be fine as long as the TE on the field can block.

Sleeper, I think Cole Holcomb might be a monster this year. He was a tackle machine last year but he looks ready to go this year, as long as he didn't catch LaRon Landry Syndrome.

Re: WFT 2020 Training Camp

D-Line excites the hell out of me ...

I think opposing QB's will be sounding a lot like those folks interviewed on Sharkfest on Nat Geo Channel, or Shark Week on Discovery Channel ...

"Yeah, I didn't see anything, and then noticed a shadow out of the corner of my eye. Then suddenly I felt this WHAM. And then this crushing pressure. And then I looked down and saw all this blood, and saw Chase Young doing a sack dance on my head. It all happened so fast." -- Daniel Jones

Seriously .. our D, with Del Rio running it, could be deadly. It could single handedly win us a couple of games next year in the NFC Least.

Yeah the DL is promising and I don't really see a legit hole in our D...

Wow, just listened to Ian Rapoport on NFLNetwork:

-No physical before 5 days and 2 negative CoVid testings
-No actual football practice before 16 days of TC... only strength and conditioning for 2 weeks+

Wonder how much it'll affect team preparation early on.

I hope he just takes a symbolical snap and retires. He has generational wealth and I would hate to see him get injured again. The man nearly lost his leg...

But you have to respect his will, abnegation, strength of mind and incredible courage !

So he's been cleared to return to football... by his chirurgical team. Not by team doctors yet.

But you have to rank his surgical team ahead of the team doctors, right? At least as far as medicine/knowing-the-injury goes?

I just hope they take their sweet time with this. PUP for one more year ... then let him try football activities next year --- maybe.

From a medical knowledge standpoint I agree.
For playing football though, I'd say passing the team's physical is still harder than having your doctor say "as far as I'm concern you're fine, you can play football".

-Position you're most excited about:

D-Line. Really excited to see what they can do with competent coaches and a return to a 4-3 base.

-Position you're most worried about:

Offensive line. Best case scenario I hope Wes Martin and Saahdiq Charles seize the opportunity but worst case scenario one of our skill players gets seriously injured thanks to their struggles.

-Position battle you're most intrigued about :

TE. Somebody needs to step up and take the job. Moss has the name but not much else. Sprinkle is below average in everything imo.

-Sleeper player you think will have a big impact:

Really hoping it's Gandy-Golden after the loss of Harmon, we could really use some help from our rookies.

I guess every team has these sceanrios, but it seems like we'r facing a lot of IF'S ...

... IF Guice stays healthy for 16 games;
... IF Haskins improves in his sophomore year;
... IF our rookie receivers can step up huge their first year;
... IF we can find an adequate Left Tackle;
... IF Morgan Moses can return to form, or a replacement can be RT;
... IF we can find 3 serviceable to good CB's;
... IF we can find a safety to pair with Collins;
,.. IF Reuben Foster can show his first round talent AND stay healthy for 16 games;

... IF ... IF ... IF ....

Then SUPER BOWL, Baby!!!

-Position you're most excited about:

QB - while the DL with Young looks promising, it won't matter if Haskins doesn't improve enough to show he's our QB going forward.

-Position you're most worried about:

I'm just gonna say the offensive line as a whole...easily the biggest worry.

-Position battle you're most intrigued about :

This is a toss up for me with WR & RB - other than McLaurin and AP, everyone else is a question mark? new faces and ones that can't stay healthy...who will emerge?

-Sleeper player you think will have a big impact:

I'm really hoping it's a TE...don't even care who it is...Moss, Thomas, Sprinkle...whoever...someone's gotta step up

Coach Ron Rivera recently said Gibson has “a skill set like Christian McCaffrey.” Not saying he will be CMC or even used as much as him, but OC Scott Turner knows he will have to be creative on offense, and Gibson’s versatility will allow him to create mismatches all over the field.

Peterson, Guice, Gibson, Love, McKissic running back room is gonna look real nice. If healthy, which is a HUGE if, I wouldn't trade that group for any other NFL teams group.

Re: WFT 2020 Training Camp

If Guice and Love are healthy, AP has to take a back seat. Both guys are home run hitters and can put the ball in the end zone from anywhere. AP is 3 yards and a cloud of dust at this point of his career.

-Position you're most excited about:

Not position, but pass rush. If we can average over 3 sacks per game then we should be a top 10 defence. Though I agree if the O doesn't click that might not matter.

-Position you're most worried about:

OL definitely. I have faith in the coaching but aside from Scherff we have no names. We really need a new Hogs group to form.

-Position battle you're most intrigued about :

RB but big if on Guice and Love. And if Gibson is in the mix a la McCaffrey, it could really take the pressure off the short to mid passing game (I see a lot of screen type plays). That in turn would open up more deep shots. IF it all clicks it could be a big play O.

-Sleeper player you think will have a big impact:

I want to put Sims into this slot. With Harmon out he has the perfect opportunity to build on last season, especially if Gandy-Golden steps up to draw some coverage. 3 amigos anyone?

Re: WFT 2020 Training Camp

NFL training camp schedules 2020

With the exception of the Chiefs and Texans, all NFL teams will conduct 2020 training camps on the same schedule. While specifics like workout/practice times and other logistics will vary from team to team, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a specific timeline that includes acclimation and ramp-up periods before teams can begin practicing with pads.

Below is the training camp schedule all NFL teams will follow. (The Chiefs and Texans' training camp schedules play out days earlier than the dates below.)

Dates Period
July 28-31 COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
Aug. 1-2 Physicals and equipment distribution
Aug. 3-11 Acclimation period
Aug. 12-16 Gradual ramp-up period
Aug. 17-Sept. 6 Contact integration period (practice)

The NFLPA pushed for so much time between training camp reporting dates and padded practices because the entire offseason program played out virtually in 2020. The players wanted to give themselves the best chance to get into football shape and avoid injuries.

Below is a more detailed breakdown of the five periods in the 2020 training camp schedule.

COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings (July 28-31)

July 28: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
July 29: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings
July 30: Virtual meetings
July 31: COVID-19 testing and virtual meetings

Physicals and equipment (Aug. 1-2)

After everybody has gone through a round of initial COVID-19 testing and subsequent isolation, those who tested negative will proceed with the basics of training camp prep.

This is also the period where daily COVID-19 testing begins. The NFL will have players tested once a day for the first two weeks of camp, and after two weeks, if the rate of positive tests is below five percent, testing will move to every other day.

Acclimation period (Aug. 3-11)

One hour of weight room and one hour of on-field conditioning
Total strength and conditioning (small groups under 15) duration capped at two hours
No conditioning tests
Only strength and conditioning coaches for strength and conditioning drills
On-field strength and conditioning subject to Phase 1 rules (QBs, receivers, kickers, punters and long snappers permitted to use footballs)
In addition to strength and conditioning, walkthroughs permitted up to one hour on each of the first four days and up to 75 minutes on each of the final four days
Aug. 8 is an off day

Gradual ramp-up period (Aug 12-16)

Maximum of 3 1/2 hours of on-field time per day
First practice starts at 90 minutes with a max increase of 15 minutes per day up to a daily maximum of 120 minutes
Remainder of daily 3 1/2 hour on-field time limit applied to walkthrough
Aug. 12-13: Phase 2 activities; helmets and approved protective shirts permitted
Aug. 14-16: Non-padded practice days (no live contact, all customary practice activities); helmets, spiders, shells permitted
Aug. 15 is an off day

Contact integration period (Aug. 17 - Sept. 6)

Duration starts at 90 minutes with 15-minute daily increases
No increase or decrease in duration following an off day
Daily time limits dictated by CBA
Maximum of 14 padded practices

The first regular-season game of the season, Chiefs vs. Texans, is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, with the rest of the Week 1 slate scheduled to play out the following Sunday and Monday.

So im guessing the skins started COVID testing and virtual meetings yesterday.

On Our D-line ranked 3rd best in NFL by PFF. Not bad.

On RB’s, There will be plenty of carries for everyone. RB’s take a beating. There is nothing wrong with sharing the load and keeping them fresh. The season is a marathon not a sprint. Plus Guice and Love have to prove they can hold up to the punishment. I hope they can, they are both talented.
I like the way Gibbs used to handle his RB’s.
He would pound the opposing defense with his work horse like Earnest Byner to soften up the opposing defense then bring in the speed back when the opposing defense was tired and ready break. Gibbs also had a designated goal line back Gerald Riggs.
I could see Guice/AP sharing the work horse role and Love/Gibson bringing the speed. Plus you know there will be a diamond in the rough find at RB.

Id like to know who they put ahead of us honestly. Hopefully over the next few years the unit reaches its potential bc on paper, we should dominate.

Chase Young - 1st R
Sweat - 1R
Allen - 1R
Payne - 1R
Kerrigan - 1R

That is a TON of resources poured into a single unit. If I had a choice of which unit to invest heavy in ... itd be DL. But I think perhaps we went too deep.
