Cards Pregame Thread
Skins have a tough game this week on the road versus the Cards. They are coming off a huge win versus 49ers where Hopkins and Kyler Murray had big games.
To me it’s all about one thing, defending the Air Raid offense. Their coach had another offseason of installing it against NFL defenses and we saw growth last week against a strong 9ers Team. Hopkins talent will transcend in any offense but Murray fit for what they want to do is perfect. Murray is never under center and running the ball takes a backseat to a fast passing attack. It’s very much a rhythm offense and Kingbury is trying to get as many plays as possible in a game. Ways to stop should play to our strengths on defense, winning 1 on 1 pass rushing against their avg-below avg Oline and disguising multiple zone based coverages with some zone blitzing nuance thrown in. I expect less beef up front with more athletic front (less Payne and Settle, More Matty I and RK). Our CB should be confident after last week performance, they will have to have a big week. Will be interesting to see who will be assigned to Murray...Collins or one of the LB. Apke needs to be better this week. Offense, I expect us to get the Run game going this week. More Jd And Gibby touches out the backfield. Arizona’s dline isn’t as strong or as stout as Philly, I like our Oline to bounce back a little bit. Hail! |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
If our pass rush is as good as Sunday we will be 2-0. The Cards OL is not very good, I'd expect a ton of screens and short passes.
|
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Nice points Chico and skinsfan. We cannot forget Drake too, he can win games for Cardinals.
|
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
The cards center got dinged up on Sunday, their OL is not bad. They key is to contain Murray from scrambling, Drake and Edmunds are solid RB’s and then their is their WR’s and solid TE’s. The Cards didn’t get lucky beating the 49ers, they earned it. Their D is solid too. Hopefully we take out Murray, he’s one big hit away since he’s not that big despite gaining 15lbs this season.
|
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Just one thing to note here, is that the 49ers also have an incredible defensive line yet lost to Arizona in Week 1. So I think we'll need our offense to make some progress here in Week 2. It would be a good week for Dwayne and Terry to hit a bomb or two.

Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Wentz last 10 drives vs. 4 or less rushers by Washington was 6-18 2 ints.
I expect Rivera to have the defense discipline. Kyler has to be patient, but I also think this is a Kenyan Drake/Chase game . Run the ball and play action. Washington let the Eagles wrs run loose, but the Eagles became too predictable trying to throw too much (Sanders was injured). I also think Dan Arnold can make some plays this week as well. Eagles TE's had lots of room. ------------------- 8 sacks on the Eagles 2nd string line yesterday so a huge test for our O line this week. I envision more of the same. More dink and dunk to neutralize the pass rush. Using the rush to open lanes for Kyler to run. Loads of touches for Hopkins and try close out a poor offense that really only got the win due to two big interceptions. Need to get the lead this week and hold it. ----------------------------------------------- Looking at the ESPN game logs, Washington's longest drive to score pts started from Philly 48. The other scoring drives where from Philly 45, 42 & 20 yard lines. Even the 2018 Cardinals make a comeback with that starting field position. -------------------- Our Oline will need to do a better job (especially Hump) because the Washies have a tremendous Dline. No turnovers and they will have trouble scoring. KM will make enough plays with his legs to give us the W if the Cards avoid shooting themselves in the foot. Rivera is a very good HC and he will have his team ready to play and I expect a tough battle. https://www.arizonasportsfans.com/forum/threads/wk-2-washington-potatoes-football-team-arizona-cardinals-pre-game-thread-09-14-20-09-29-20.367097/ ^^^ These are some good posts from a Cards fan forum. They give praise to McLaurin, Chase and the D line. If the Cards already employ a short, quick hitting passing attack that could be trouble for us. They have a great secondary with PP and Bubba Baker headlining. Chandler Jones on the DL and blue chip rookie LB Isiah Simmons (who apparently had a rough opener). Id expect us to target our TEs and backs heavily. Stay away from PP and know what side of the field Baker is patrolling. Jones should give geron toruble, I imagine we will be handcuffed a bit giving Martin some help ... but Geron might need some help too. Tough one. |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
I read that whole Cards forum thread...sounds like they're scared of us actually. Most are calling it a trap game.
They said Coach Rivera lit them up with Kyle Allen last season. :D |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Give the Cards credit for cutting their losses with Rosen and drafting Murray.
McLaurin is going to have Peterson all over his ass, someone else needs to step up. |

Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Anybody got a line on Fuller's injury? Can't find an update since last week. It would be a benefit having him play this week, especially considering Hopkins.

I don’t know about that, he might older but he had a pretty good game on Sunday against SF. |

They said Coach Rivera lit them up with Kyle Allen last season. :D
Carolina had 8 sacks in the game and ran the ball. Half those sacks came from LB and 1 from safety position, meaning they were blitzing. Rivera and Turner getting that experience against is key. Gotta believe Rivera will be sitting in a lot of d meetings this week. |

I havent seen anything. We will know whether he is active, limited participation or out for wed and thurs practices. If he is out on Wed .. that isnt a good indicator. LP would be a good sign. ------------- I saw something yesterday, forget where, but we were getting a ton of Qb pressure off 4 man rushes .. which, if you can do that .. holy shit. |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
I bet the no 1 takeaway when the offense and Rivera watches our game tape from the Philly game....we must get the run game going, it’s imperative to winning football.
This week could be the Gibson and JD coming out party. |

Re: Cards Pregame Thread
According to Pro Football Focus, Washington’s line allowed 17 pressures on 36 dropbacks — the fourth-most pressures allowed league wide. And of those 17, the analytics website viewed Christian and Martin as responsible for nine of them (Five for Martin, four for Christian).
“They got smacked in the face early,” Rivera said. Rivera said he liked the way Martin and Christian responded, but as Washington prepares for the Arizona Cardinals this week, the left side of the line remains a cause for concern. On Sunday, the line will be tasked with stopping Cardinals pass-rusher Chandler Jones, whose 61 sacks since 2016 leads the league. Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Power Rankings for Week 2, we still get no respect as usual.
We're at 28. The Lions and Browns are ahead of us! Filthydelphia at 16 despite the fact we beat the crap out of them. Cowgurls who lost, looked like garbage and lost several key players at 14. I do like how they still called us the Redskins in the Eagles' blurb. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/powerrankings/ |

This. Containing Murray is the key. Study the AZ-SF game film. |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Win or lose i just want to see them play a full 60 minutes. We haven't had that in quite a few years. Even in our win last week, we came out slow. Adjustments were key, and it was amazingly fun to watch....but we need to hit the ground running, and play a full game. Im trying to figure out how to watch it out of market...like, legit. I have to call about getting sunday ticket in my apartment through an app...this whole covid thing is making it impossible to go to my local bar. Sucks being an out of market fan.

They have a good team here in AZ!! |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
They will have to be able to sustain long drives and win time of possession. They can do that if they are able to put together a solid running game, or a combination of running and using the backs out of the backfield. I'm not convinced this team can run the ball though, not after what I saw last week. I think they averaged about 2 yards per carry last week :embarrass. So it could be a long day. I do think the Eagles D is probably better overall than the Cardinals D...but there's only one week of work to compare them. We'll find out this weekend.
I think the defense is going to have to carry this team again (as they probably will all year unless the O-line play improves), and they'll have to do it against a more potent offense than last week. A defensive / special teams TD would be nice... |

And based on the O performance I'd say that's fair. |

Per John Keim and the injury report:
Full practice today for 2 potential staters on defense who missed last week: Thomas Davis and Kendall Fuller. Big news! |

Unfortunately, sunday ticket is only real option for those people like us who do not live in the area. I used to try find free streaming games but it always got messed up or too many ads coming on frequently, I gave up and bought sunday ticket last year for the full price. I did the math and I realized I probably would have spent a little more if I went to restaurant/bar for every Redskins game because of drinks, food and tip. With the sunday ticket, you will pay $296, which is $18.50 per game. The cost of per game goes down if you use it to watch other games as well so it is worthwhile if you love football games. |

Yea..i def spend more at the bar. Usually when i go in i give the bartender 20 before i order my first beverage or food as I know im taking up a seat for 4ish hrs. They set me up with the ticket, and took monthly payments. Im totally OK with it. Im like 45 north of philly...so i get 2 eagles and 2 giants games televised locally. And with no prime time games it makes it even a little easier to stomach. It worked out, though. Now I'm super stoked to watch the game this Sunday! Hail!!! |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Of course containing Murray and keeping Hopkins and Fitzgerald on check is going to be key.
But don't underestimate this D. Not flashy on paper, but Garoppolo was under duress all game last week, and I think Arizona is a very good coverage team. Moving the ball on them is NOT going to be easy, I hope Turner has a plan to help our young QB and a mediocre Oline. |

Can't expect the d-line to repeat that performance. Need more plays out of Haskins. Get Sims more involved. We still do not have a NFL TE.

Thomas was the least of our problems. We need to be able to run the ball. I agree with Sims, but id say run game is number one priority. |

It would help our cause to get the ball to Antonio Gibson in space as much as we can. He is a home run hitter.

S are available. If we are looking, id prefer someone who was in a camp this August. Ha Ha and Damarious Randall are available and should be in game shape.
I imagine both would be cheap 1 year minimum deals. But I dont think we are looking and wed have to drop someone to make room. |
Re: Cards Pregame Thread
Randall was decent in CLE, I'd take a look
