How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

I have been a big supporter of Dwayne Haskins. I didn’t know if he’s the ONE, but I didn’t want to have him sit out his rookie season ( advocated by some). Following his first season, that ended in a good note - two very good final games, I thought he deserved a full test audition this season.

Haskins is very inconsistent, sometimes making laser passes to barely open receivers. Other times he is very inaccurate, missing wide open receivers.
His footwork is bad - even when there is no rush, he has “happy feet”, using his considerable arm strength to force passes downfield. His weak mechanics is much of the reason for his inaccurate throws. He seems at times to be playing tight - resulting in over-throwing the receivers often.

This game against Cleveland he got caught several times staring down receivers, resulting in INT. If Haskins QB play doesn’t improve soon, he will be eaten alive by really good defenses.

Of course, Haskins is not helped by a mediocre OL, and a weak WR group outside of McLaurin. I wonder how long Rivera is going to let Christian and Martin flounder before he attempts to try someone available in FA.

However, there were periods where he had good protection and open receivers/RB. He did well sometimes and other times he was inaccurate- missing his receiver or forcing them to make amazing catches. I think our offense could increase its stats by 20% if Dwayne could hit open guys, in stride.

With four turnovers, it is fair for fans to ask: how long do we keep playing Haskins? When have we seen enough?

I’d say by MID-SEASON would be the EARLIEST number of games before bringing in Allen or Alex Smith. You’ve got to let a young, inexperienced QB like Haskins have enough reps to test his meddle and learn the new offense. Maybe even 10 games. What do you think?

Remember, if you draft a QB in the first round you’ve got to give him enough games to prove himself. So I know there are ppl out there who want to dump Dwayne NOW. That’s too soon.

Topic: HOW MANY GAMES IS ENOUGH FOR DWAYNE HASKINS? Has the team given him enough support in terms of targets? Sure they brought in INMAN and Logan Thomas. But that’s about it. I was interested to see how HOOPER did for the Browns, since many of us had hoped the WFT would go for him in FA. The team has a ton of cap money - great for next year. IS THE OFFENSE GOOD ENOUGH TO PROPERLY TEST HASKINS?

My final thought is this: how could the Redskins draft a first round QB with such a low amount of inexperience? With significant problems with BASIC QB FUNDAMENTALS? A Pocket passer with big inaccuracy issues?? I see Snyder’s and Allen’s hands on this pick. Snyder likes players who were locals. When you draft a QB in the first round you want to winner. Someone who can do well enough in the first year to make you want to keep him. Haskins looks like PROJECT PLAYER who will need 1-2 seasons MORE to know if he’s a franchise QB. The NFL isn’t like that anymore. Sure Mahommes got to sit and learn behind Alex Smith. But most first round QB are thrown in the deep end from game 1. You get maybe two seasons max to prove yourself.

I think Haskins might be very good in 2-3 years. But this franchise doesn’t have 2-3 years. Furthermore, after 2-3 years Haskins may be a bust, like RG3, Jason Campbell, Shuler. BTW, historically most of those Redskin QB had 2-3 full seasons to prove themselves as FAILURES. That’s for all you that think the Haskin’s experiment should be over after 9 games. HOW MUCH TIME FOR HASKIN’s? Then who: Allen or Alex Smith?

Allen and Smith aren’t the answer this year or for the long term. Ride it out this season with Dwayne.

All of them.
This team is playing for the future not the present.

The Jets/Giants might combine to go 0/32. Not to mention, other bad teams. Our chances of getting him are slim amd none. Quitting on games is bulshit.

We are in trouble if we can’t find a Solid QB by next year. We all want Trevor but so do 5 other bad teams. We would have to lose out to get the #1 pick most likely.

Haskins is what he is, I don’t see him improving anytime soon. He’s bad just bad.

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

New offensive system, 9th NFL game, no pre-season. Yes, this was his worst game this season, I want to see more screen passes, more AGG and Wright, more running. Part of the problem they got way to pass happy and not enough running. I haven’t seen a consistent running game yet in 3 games, this offense should be run first, pass second. I also blame the coaches.

Go ahead and measure Haskins against other QBs in that draft class who start.

excuses simply don’t hold up and other QB are in worse situations too

I think Allen would be the same basically so benching him may not do anything, but throwing in the towel 2 straight weeks is not a good look

It doesn’t really matter because the quarterback of the future isn’t on the roster. If there was another young quarterback in the wings I would have benched Haskins at halftime today.

Crapkins is the product of a system at OSU. Superior coaching. Faster wr’s than any db’s they faced. Great o-line. All he had to do was chuck the ball and they went and got it basically untested. Other than his strong arm he has nothing in the way of a skill set. Accuracy, footwork, ability to read the field, decision making - they are not even necessary when you have the best weapons, best line, best coaching - ya just showcase that arm. Snyder (who knows dick about the game) hedged his bets that his strong arm would be enough in the NFL, or that he would learn all the other things. As if 1000 other strong armed quarterbacks couldn’t just chuck the ball down the field in the NFL, and failed.

Going back to the 2012 draft, what if we drafted Russell Wilson? Where would this organization be? He has turned out to be miles better than RG3 or Cousins.

This is Snyder's problem. He first did this w/ Jeff George. He gets a man crush on every guy who has a cannon. He doesn't have a clue how to evaluate a QB.

So say we aren't in the running. That means Jets/Giants aren't keeping Darnold or Jones and I would take their accuracy over Haskins. Would you you bide time with one of them over Haskins while we go back into the QB draft turnstile?

Funny you say that. I was just thinking exactly that and that we are gonna wind up with Darnold. There are a couple other good quarterbacks and there are always one or two that burst on the scene late but next year is loaded with o line and i think that is where we need to go...

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

To me what the coaching staff thinks about Haskins is based on how aggressively they pursued left tackle. You protect your franchise right? That didn't get done in the off. Maybe they had other things on their mind IDK.

Darnold has talent...Adam Gase is an absolute terrible coach and is a major asshole without people skills.

I’d take Darnold here for sure..he has a lot talent with a terrible o talent around him.

They might keep them, but they'll still ask for a king's ransom at minimum for No. 1 pick. No less than 3 1st round picks. Probably flopping picks this year and 3 additional 1st round picks. Pass on that.

Maybe he’s not, maybe he’s the answer but you can’t throw the plan away this early in the season. Haskins has RR’s trust for now (at least is what RR says).

'bout sums it up. I feel like week 1 put this idea in people's heads that we are a good-to-great team with a shot at competing this year. This entire year is about growth for the young guys and figuring out what you have and what Ron needs to retool for next year. Ride Haskins out, if he's not the answer we'll get the answer this offseason.

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

Mahomes did pretty well sitting behind Alex Smith and learning initially. Lots of franchise QBs had a learning period before starting. Even average QB play could have won today’s game. I know we are rebuilding but perennially getting the shit kicked out of us doesn’t feel like building anything. The 49ers rebuilt in basically a year. The Pats are winning after losing unbelievable talent in the offseason and due to COVID. Oh, and good players including FAs don’t want to come or stay here when all they see is season after season of crap. It’s frigging dispiriting. We just got waxed by the Cleveland Browns.

Trashkins gets 8 games. If he keeps playing like this then it ain't fair to the other players. How can you keep trotting a guy out there who keeps throwing into triple coverage? It's only a matter of time before the players, especially the ones on offense start to revolt.

Agree. You have to play DH all season. The team cant give up on a 1st round pick based on only a few games.

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

I think Rivera gives Dwayne 14 full games and if there’s obviously no massive improvement in Haskin’s play, then you give Allen a couple games to see if he has anything. Only play Alex Smith in a emergency. Smith is not the future and won’t be on the team next year.

The naked truth is that this team was largely built by Snyder and Bruce Allen. Neither know anything about football and Dan has made terrible personnel decisions for over two decades. It will take YEARS to rebuild the team from SNYDER’s buffoonery. Clean out the bad players and put in ppl chosen by Kyle Smith and Rivera.

The reason teams like the Patriots win, year after year, is because they had the best QB OF ALL TIME, mixed with the BEST FOOTBALL COACH OF ALL TIME,- for 20 years. The Pats instigated the personnel system to set money limits per position. They let most players go by age 30. As a perennial winner they get excellent veterans who want to play on a SuperBowl able team and they do it for a cheap contract for a couple years.

Snyder’s legacy is to bring “over the hill” vets here, who get a big, fat contract and then they show up here to play as big, fat and medium effort players milking their big bucks for as long as they can. Players came here to CASH OUT. It will take years to change this team from Snyder’s disastrous reign. In 2-3 years it will be Rivera and Smith’s team. Then we can expect a winner. I doubt that Haskin’s is on the team then.

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

We should give Dwayne the whole season, with the one caveat being that you can't build a culture if you let a player keep putting up the kind of performance like Dwayne had yesterday. The locker room is going to lose its mind if he keeps playing like this. We say give him the whole season because we assume there will be some improvement and we want to see where he can get to. But at the same time Rivera needs so set a standard, and allowing that to happen repeatedly can't coexist with building the right culture.

Also, I want to note that I'm suggesting Dwayne be given the season only because we have to find out what we have, not because I have any confidence in him. You've got to give him the starts but I'm quite sure he's not the answer for us.

Re: How Many Games Should We Test Haskins?

This is something I’ve been thinking about too:

Scott Turner, continue to install your offense and focus on the development of ALL young offense players, not just Haskins.

We have an entire stable of young guys on the offense and we need to see who can be coached and grow within the system. Scott Turner, don’t hold back others growth in spite of Haskins. Installed the offense so everyone can grow together.
