Our new DC
So who does Dan hire as new DC?
Raheem Morris just got fired. I can see him being Dan’s top candidate. |
Re: Our new DC
I would like the Jets HC if he gets fired.

Re: Our new DC
I’m watching Jim Schwartz in Cleveland. If he is fired with the rest of the coaching staff, he’s in my top list. I’d take him over Morris.
Whitt needs to go though |
Re: Our new DC
Schwartz would be a good option
|
Re: Our new DC
I see Dan going with someone he’s worked with before.
|
Re: Our new DC
Agree Schwartz would be intriguing. Despite everything else surrounding the Watson fiasco, their D has been consistently good.
Begs the question why hasn't Whitt been fired already? DQ might want to keep him on staff out of some kind of loyalty/familiarity motive, but he must realise that won't work on an NFL team, surely? If he's going to fire him, should have done it already, but at least fire him today. |
Re: Our new DC
Gannon, the former Cardinals coach, is interviewing for the DC position. That would be a good move if it happens.

Re: Our new DC
Whomever they hire can they go sign a few guys off the Texans defense?
|
Re: Our new DC
I have a very hard time thinking Brian Flores is a possibility here
Too many open HC positions and Vikings want him back. I would absolutely love him here, but think this has an extremely low chance of happening |
Re: Our new DC
Yeah Flores coming here is slim to none.
I'm intrigued by Titans' DC Dennard Wilson - Titans don't have anyone on the D except for Simmons and yet they overachieved. There is a report that DQ is impressed by him during the interview, I'm not sure if the report is legit tho. |
Re: Our new DC
A number of good/intriguing candidates out there -- Brian Flores (interviewed, apparently), Jim Schwartz, Jonathan Gannon (also interviewed), Al Harris, and Dennard Wilson. I will say, if I were one of these guys, I'd be unhappy with how bare our cupboard is, and want some real input to personnel (draft and FA).

Re: Our new DC
Jeff Ulbrich, Jim Schwartz or Brian Flores
This is who everyone wants. Hopefully we can grab one of these |

Re: Our new DC
Think about it. At this point, Quinn is a lame duck coach coming into the 2026 season. His DC/OC both are jettisoned with the next stage being Quinn being fired. He's definitely on the hot seat now, and the clock is just ticking. I wouldn't want to come here if I were a decent DC.

I know what you're saying, but you can't describe him as lame duck and on the hot seat at the same time. Lame duck means he's gone regardless, hot seat means he has to succeed or he's gone. And there's no telling right now whether he can get us straight back to the playoffs or not. He has to be on the hot seat (with AP not 100% comfortable either) but he's not a lame duck. |

I agree with this. In addition, the defense can only improve. If we go from 31st in the league to just middle of the road, it will be a massive improvement. It seems to me that a decent DC is likely to be able to demonstrate some immediate results, which is not a bad record to curate. |
Re: Our new DC
Call me crazy, I’m interested in Al Harris in that second tier choice for DC. Like the energy and he’s gotten serious results as a secondary coach

Al Harris is my favorite choice now. But we still haven't hires anyone yet, so I wonder if there is someone on the last 4 teams left they might be looking at. |
Re: Our new DC
Or nobody stands out or wants to come here. Be surprised if the latter as simply improving our D by a few ranks will look good on any DC's CV. I agree, more likely they're keeping their powder dry until at least the conference games are done.
|
Re: Our new DC
Best we can hope for is an up and comer first time DC. Nobody established would want to come here with our glaring lack of standout defensive talent.
|
Re: Our new DC
OTOH if AP and the staff agree on and manage to draft defensive stud at #7 (and more lower?), you get to come in and build your legacy off the back of that/those young guys. It's a matter of ambition and perspective. Hell, if you can come in and turn around guys like Sainristil and Luvu who had great seasons before this year, you can walk away in 2-3 seasons with a good CV.

Re: Our new DC
Jonathan Gannon to Packers, Dennard Wilson to Giants, Brian Flores staying with Vikes (unless he gets a HC gig) -- Raheem Morris is available but may be the Cards next coach. Al Harris still out there too. I've heard good things about the Texas passing game coordinator, Dino Vasso too -- learned under Schwartz and Ryans.
I do hope we get our guy as opposed to whomever is left after other teams make their hires. |
Re: Our new DC
Jimmys and Joes over X's and O's... I'm more interested in the draft and free agency when it comes to the defense. We need some game wreckers.

We need game wreckers for sure, but the 2025 Lions are a decent argument for the need to have good coordinators too. |
Re: Our new DC
(Schefter) Source: Commanders are finalizing a deal to hire Vikings defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Daronte Jones as their defensive coordinator

I like the hire. We’ll get a Brian Flores style defense. |
Re: Our new DC
They certainly are taking some swings for coordinators but hey I hope it works out
|
Re: Our new DC
24 years of coaching experience. Whatever level before, he's got 9 years experience in the NFL. Primarily DB's coaching, so should improve the secondary almost immediately. He's not some young 'reach' hire (not that Blough is necessarily a reach), and the Vikes didn't want to lose him. Not an established name, but how many 1st time coordinators are known outside coaching circles? As to play calling, he's got DC experience in HS and at LSU, and with DQ he'll have help available anyway. Cautiously optimistic.

Re: Our new DC
Don’t hate it and just hoping for the best
I like the hire. We’ll get a Brian Flores style defense.
Agree. His strength is pass defense and anything to do with a Brian Flores defense I'm interested in. Reportedly, he highly impressed in the interview. He has a lot of work to do here.

Yep. I think it might mean that DQ believes that he is pretty safe (barring another disaster season). I have a hard time believing that DQ would hired non-experienced coordinators if he feels that he is not 100% safe. On the paper, it seems like Jones is a good hire. Let's see what happens. |
Re: Our new DC
Reading that he had 5 DC interviews this offseason so he was definitely in demand.

On the paper, it seems like Jones is a good hire. Let's see what happens.
Given the extreme of the injuries I think he gets a mulligan. Players kept playing hard right until the end unlike in past years, I think that’s a testament to him that he held the locker room together. |
Re: Our new DC
Shows what I know. I thought with a green OC we'd hire a retread DC. I don't know anything about position coaches so I can't say I feel this is good or bad but the fact he had a few DC interviews means people with higher football IQs than I like the guy. No matter what I think we will be entertained next year,
|
Re: Our new DC
Seems like a decent hire. I like that he worked under Flores. But it really does not matter who we bring in here to call plays and run the defense. We lack players on all three levels. We have no real rushers, no LB's and outside of Amos, nothing in the secondary. This new guy really is going to have to get some better play out of the holdovers they decide to keep.

Re: Our new DC
It's a good hire. NFC East is going to be interesting this season. No team will be the same all have new Coaches be it DC , OC's or HC.

Can we get better talent and then scheme fit guys for the new DC. Minnesota cap position isn’t great maybe we can bring in some familiar folks if they cut some guys. I’m optimistic for some unknown reason. |

The difference between the team beating Philly in week 18 and the hang-dog look of our team at the end of the Rivera era is stark. |
