Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Our defense sucks. Mix of some starters but that defense sucked.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Mariota in medical tent, Hartman in.
|
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Hartman sucks.
|
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Well, we played better as the game went on but since it was just backups, how do really judge the performance?
Rookie rbs Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry Jr had good nights. We won, 20-7. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Age old diff between practice and games..
... then again its preseason |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
wake me up for week 1
|
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
I watched every single snap. Almost dozed off a few times.. The QB from Rutgers looks more like a keeper over Hartman.
Allen from Penn St reminds me of another version of BRob except slower. But he moves the pile. Looked like Styles ran in the wrong hole a few times.. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
Mariota suffered a strained mcl.
Mariota suffered a strained mcl.
He's out for the preseason at least. Rewatching the game now only in 1st quarter, then I'll have my thoughts. We better have a decent backup however this Mariota injury develops.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
A few thoughts pre game vs post game
Center: Good jones is still a cut candidate, better but still bad, guessing he was partially responsible for Marriott injury. Gulbin- much better than before when I thought he could be a cut candidate, should take over #2 spot by default Brunskil- was expecting him to play center as he's probably the best at this point, but I saw him at LG a lot, not sure of performance but he seemed ok. Perhaps they are playing him there to see if he can be the interior swing guy, including center while Gulbin develops. Key note, the coach says its between good jones and Gulbin (who he will also try at guard) so my mention of Brunskill likely doesn't mean squat Coleman seemed to do pretty good at LT thankfully. Interior blocking was meh, but good-jones is a major culprit, it was risky playing him and not brunskil or Gulbin, it hurt us. No idea on connelly, but I haven't really notice a problem so that is good. Disappointed in Luke, should have dominated, a little down on kaytron allen due to lack of agility, that combined with our current power blocking interior issue makes him a bit of a mismatch. Chris Hilton Jr was quite impressive, he may jeopardize a practice squad attempt. No one else really moved the needle on my perceptions of the offense. Hartman had another game with questions. On defense, Newton got pushed around a lot, so that was surprising, was hoping. Was hoping more from styles and Chanel. Underperformed a bit. So overall Henry jumped a lot and has a shot at rb4, good jones and Hartman are not good enough and could get guys hurt. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
I like what I saw from Robert Henry Jr. Kid showed pretty good juice in this game. Allen looks like a bruiser with a little wiggle. Not expecting a lot outside the tackles, but he can pound it threw the line. Defense looked decent in general. Like the lb Ale Kaho. He had a pick and seemed to be everywhere.
Hartman can move the ball some but had a bad pick and just don't think he's got a NFL arm. Like what I saw from the rookie qb Kaliakmanis. He had a pretty quick release, good arm strength, and was accurate. Almost throws lasers. Not real mobile but this kid looked pretty good really. Not a bad preseason game overall especially for week 1. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
I wonder whether Hartman is going to be cut to bring in a FA veteran QB while Mariota is out. He's just not an NFL QB (the rook was better), and it isn't clear what value there is to keeping him as he seems to have hit a fairly low ceiling.
More than anything else, I really would like to see us get through the preseason without any more injuries. I think this is an improved team over last year in every phase of the game, but we need some good health karma to truly find out. |

Really do like the kid. He can move some and move the offense some. The arm isn't there though. Pretty clear the rook looked better. No clue what's going on with Mariota. Weird injury. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
It is interesting that they plan to run the rest of preseason with only 3 quarterbacks.
Usually there are 4 camp arms, particularly when you are trying to assess wr depth fairly. I bet they change their mind, as they still have blocking issues that still need to be resolved as I bet allegretti won't be ramped up to play for the next game. Heck, Gulbin may start at center, or brunskill. I don't want Daniels in under those conditions. The question is who can actually learn an entirely new playback in one day and start throwing dimes in preseason games 2 and 3 so we can assess our players? And double backup, who can do so in real games as a primary backup in the first month of the season? Kind of a pickle. Good Jones should have slid protection on the play Mariotta got injured (my opinion) They may just be forced to ride it out with the 3, playing AK and Hartman in the 2 remaining games the rest of the way and hope Mariotta heals fast. I hope they aren't forced to keep 3 qbs on the roster. Certainly not Hartman. AK seems OK, but not to take a final roster spot. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
I may be in the minority, and we are real early in the game here, but I really felt like Caleb Downs was the guy we should have picked in the first round. Nothing against Styles, I hope he turns out to be a great player. I like the pick. Also, I'm not watching tape, but every single time I turned on OSU it was Caleb Downs who was making plays. He was always all over the field. I never really noticed Styles. Again, never watched any tape but just my .02.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
I think we will need to be patient with Styles. He was a productive player in college. His physical attributes are freaky good and cannot be coached. He has the ability to be a pro bowler consistently and even more than that really. As long as he has the dog in him and our coaches coach the heck out of him he can be a star.
Downs is a stud (no argument here). He does not have Styles physical skills. Few do. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
As the season gets closer and closer there are two major concerns that keep bubbling to the surface for me, and I mean major concerns. Our GM and our HC. God please prove me wrong. People want to talk about two years ago, but that was one guy putting the entire team on his back, and I think AP has failed to do his job since then.

Seems like those are premature thoughts.. We still haven't even started the 3rd year yet. |

AP’s 24 draft class besides Hayden are on shakey ground. AP botched 25. He’ll get at least one more year to see his vision come through and rebound from his mistakes. DQ needs at least a winning season:9-8 though I think a 8-9/7-10 will still see him get another year. As long as we’re competitive and offense and defense shows improvement. If not, then he could be gone. 6-11or worse and he’s definitely gone. |

Yes this is why I enlisted the help of God to prove me wrong. Lol. They are premature thoughts for sure. Though this isnt based on Dan Snyder derangement syndrome, this is based on two years of questionable decisions. |
Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins
We are going to find out in short-order what kind of season it is going to be. The 1st 2 games will tell a lot. 2 divisional opponents on the road. Then we come home to face the Super Bowl Champs. Man, the NFL really gave us the fucking business to start the season.

I have a feeling we're going to surprise folks in week 1. Don't get me wrong, we have a pretty rough schedule, but I have a feeling we're going to be better than people think. |

I still maintain when JD5 struggled last year it was primarily due to guys not separating more than anything. Oline needs to give JD5 time. Defense will definitely be better.
