NFL's Biggest Gain/Biggest Loss 2005
 

Which offseason moves around the NFL do you think will have the most significant immediate impact this season? Long term I like what the Browns have done hiring Phil Savage but I don't think they'll see immediate dividends. So here are my choices for Biggest Gain/Biggest Loss in 2005:

Gain: Patrick Surtain (Chiefs)-Maybe a little past his prime but still has excellent cover skills and gives a D-coordinator so much flexibility because he doesn't need help. Could be just what KC needs

Loss: Tedy Bruschi (Patriots)-It's not definite that he won't play in 2005 but he's the heart of the defense and without him they could really slip

Gain: I would have to say the addition of Randy Moss to the Raiders. We know first hand what Norv can do when he has a passing game and a good RB. The addition of Moss will help out Collins, Porter, and Jordan.

Loss: The loss of Crunell and Wise from NE. Now alot of there work has to accounted for by Belichick. With out those two could Belichick revert to his old form when he was the the Browns? The team is set up pretty good, but I would think that the loss of your Offense and Defens coordinator will take its toll at one point....

Long term: I too like how the Browns are setting themselfs up for the future. They drafted well and made the nessacary(SP) moves in the front office.

Biggest Gain: im gonna go with moss to the raiders. i think their offense is gonna put up some big numbers next season.
Biggest loss: crennell and wise, i really don't see good things from the patriots this season without them.
long term: i like what the browns are doing too, i don't expect major improvements this season, but they have the right gm and the right coach.

GAIN: For pure talent, I'm also going to go with Moss. I'm just not sure that they have a QB like Culpepper to get him the ball. They also need a better running attack and I don't think Jordan can provide that.

LOSS: The addition of Bledsoe to the Cowboys. Regardless of how Parcells view this move, Bledsoe is marginally better, if at all, than Testeverde. They just went from bad to bad.

LONG TERM: I think the Bengals will soon be a force in the NFL. Palmer showed that he can play in this league and Lewis is building for the future of the franchise.

Gain:It was not a gain it was keeping our coaching staff together for another year and I think they will stay together another couple of years and Williams becoming or next head coach.
Loss:Will be if Taylo gets convicted and sent to jail for three years.

Thinking about a true gain/loss situation, you have to consider what you had to give up in order to acquire a player. It's only really a gain if you're getting value for what you're giving up. Randy Moss is certainly a great player, but the Raiders had to give up the 7th overall pick along with other players. The best free agent signings always seem to be the cheaper ones, like the Eagles last year with Trotter. The biggest reason for that is they hardly had to give anything up, only $750K in cap space. With that in mind:

Biggest Gain:
Lamont Jordan - Oakland Raiders
This guy is going to be Stephen Davis II in Turner's system. He's perfectly built for it: sturdy, rugged, hard runner, and a good blocker. I think he easily picks up 1300 yards and 10 TDs this year. At 5 years for $27.5 million, that's a big-time bargain.

Honorable Mention: Derrick Mason, Baltimore Ravens; Cedrick Benson, Chicago Bears

I like Jordan going to the Raiders too, and I definitely agree with the Davis comparison. Everyone is giving hype to Moss and rightfully so, but Jordan is going to be the workhorse and the real key to that offense.

loss-dallas drafting all those defensive ends, they needed other positions filled.

I agree with your point about Dallas. If those guys prove to be busts or they don't understand the new front, Dallas could easily have had one of the WORST offseasons since they have aging offensive skill players besides Jones.

Gain: Moss to the Raiders. When you put a playmaker like that on any team, its defintley going to make a huge impact.
Loss: Potentially Terell Owens. Now, I hate the guy, but he can play football. Taking him out of the Eagles WR core, makes it next to nothing. Now obviously they still had some success before he got there, and they will probaboly continue to have some success. However, taking a player like that out of any offense, is going to make eveyrone worse, because defenses dont have to account for a guy like Todd Pinkston, like they would TO.

gain: all of the additions the vikings have made to their defense. with culpepper at the helm, their offense will always be a force (even without moss as they showed last year when moss was hurt) but their defense has always let them down. Williamson was an awesome pickup for the vikes to help replace moss.

loss: I have no problems with this, but I seriously think what's been happening with TO and the eagles, mainly mcnabb, is gonna continue to fester especially since they won't give him more money this year.

long term: I really like the team, especially on the offensive side, that Detroit is putting together. If they stay healthy and meet their potential, that team has the chance of being a monster and with a couple tweaks to the defense next year, they could be near the top of the NFC for the next few years.

I must be one of the few people who believes now that harrington has had a couple years under his belt and some weapons around him, including a good oline in front of him, that he should do pretty well. I mean 56 comp%, 3047 yards,& 19tds/12ints isn't exactly terrible especially given the fact that his starting wrs keep getting hurt and kevin jones didn't really get it going until the second half of the season. I know there'd be quite a few people on this site plenty pleased with a qb putting up similar numbers for the Skins.

I agree. Not that he shouldnt take any blame, because a good amount shoudl go on him, but when you watch the Lions play (as I'll ussually do if the SKins arent on at the same time), he really hasent been given adequate protection thusfar. In addition, I dont think rookie WR's and RB's are "valuable weapons". They are still learning the game, and while they might be better athletes, they arent nessacarly an upgrade yet at their positions. I think this year, with Roy Williams and Kevin Jones coming into their second seasons, we can really see if Harrington has what it takes. I think he is going to be on a short leash there, but with their offense growing as a whole, he should have a better year.

We'll also see how he handles the pressure of a "make it or break it" season of sorts.
