Gibbs apologizes for calling Dallas Fans ugly

BALTIMORE -- [url="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=was"][color=#000000]Washington Redskins[/color][/url] coach Joe Gibbs apologized Saturday for calling [url="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal"][color=#000000]Dallas Cowboys[/color][/url] fans "the ugliest people in the world."



While answering questions from the crowd at the team's Fan Appreciation Day at training camp on Friday, Gibbs said: "I know we don't have any Dallas people here -- they are the ugliest people in the world."



Gibbs later stressed that he was joking, but he felt the need to address the matter again after Saturday's scrimmage against the [url="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=bal"][color=#000000]Baltimore Ravens[/color][/url].



"I tried to make a joke," Gibbs said. "I was joking. It didn't come out probably like a joke or like it should've. I hope all my buddies in Dallas -- because I've got a lot of buddies down there -- took it the right way. I hope they thought it was a joke.



"But if they didn't think it was a joke, or if anybody took it the wrong way other than a joke, when you make a mistake like that, you've got to apologize. So I apologize to anybody that might have taken it the other way."

It was funny because it's true! Gibbs is a gentleman, so he appologized, but we all know he meant it! Monday night in Dallas is going to be fun...

Interesting that this is the second time in less than a year that Gibbs has made a joke and then had to clarify it the next day. Remember back around February when he said his time in the NFL would be short (compared to his lifetime in NASCAR) and he joked that it would be "really short" if he doesn't start winning again?

i am sorry they are also the dumbest, just because their coach doesn't care at all about there organization and its history it doesn't mean that Gibbs, a life long skin couldn't take a shot at OUR RIVALS, a man with that much history in Washington isn't even aloud to join in the spirit of the people. It is disgusting. Parcells is a team jumper while gibbs is only devoted to the redskins. It is hard for them to see an othority figure actually care about a team

I don't think Joe apologized due to any pressure from anyone. He has CLASS. It was a class move. That is just Joe. He's always been that way. It's why we love him. And by the way...DALLAS SUCKS!!

agreed, i think it is out of proportion and i still think that dallas fans are deprived of love from their coach but i think gibbs took the classy move here, good for him, i just wish we could joke with each other, gibbs didn't say this on TV he said this to us, his fans and followers. He loves us as much as we love him.

What Coach Gibbs meant was seeing the turnout out Redskins fans year end and year out is a beautiful site. Now DAL has even more incentives to play at a higher level against us this year. Yes!? :oink:

I agree. When it comes to class, nobody in the NFL has more class than Joe Gibbs, hands down. And the bottom line is we all know his statements were true, so it really doesn't matter anyway. 3200 total yards, 14 QBs had more passing. Vick is overrated but is the most important player to his team, moreso than anyother player to anyother team

True, but if you center your whole offense around 1 player..you are going to get burnt...Look what happen to the Falcons when Vick broke his leg in Preseason a few years ago.
