Warrick Holdman

Any one have news on the Holdman situation. I thought we offered him a contract a few weeks ago but i have not been hearing anything about it lately. With these new LB's does that mean he turned us down? I thought he would be a good addition to our 'backers.

SmootSmack 04-06-2004 04:32 PM

He's still out there, along with Gold and Barrow. No one has picked up any of them

beg8878 04-06-2004 04:39 PM

I think someone signed Ian Gold...I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the 1st time

I don't think anyones signed Gold yet -- Chicago is still talking about picking him up.

The only offer Holdman received was from Detroit a few days ago. I'll try to post the link later.

There's some speculation going around that Jammie Sharper could be released from the Texans after June1. He'd be an awesome pickup for the Skins if they could make the contract/cap work.

Washington, Arrington, & Sharper would be a sick combo.

diehardskin2982 04-06-2004 05:43 PM

I think every team is basically sitting on their hands and checkbooks until after the draft.

I like sharper a lot but he's an outside LB, I doubt he would make the switch, as well I think he would carry a pretty big pay check as well.

SKINSnCANES 04-06-2004 06:57 PM

I wish I didnt just go look at our players cap figures... our entire cap is setup to have money for two years, then we have to cut our whole team and be in cap hell.

JoeRedskin 04-06-2004 11:53 PM

I looked at the cap numbers a while back - I think in 2006 we have a 90K cap number for only 22 players. But remember, after 2005, the new tv contract is going to kick in, I bet that will create a BIG jump in the cap number for 2006.

NY_Skinsfan 04-07-2004 03:17 AM

Are there any players that will/could restructure their contracts in '06, won't that help with the cap space also?

SKINSnCANES 04-07-2004 03:56 AM

You think Lavar would restructure again after all that...Brunell will be cut or retire that year. Does anyone know if the cap hit is the same if you cut a player or if he retires? I know that if you cut or trade a guy you have to count the whole bonus but not the contract, other than that Im not sure.

JoeRedskin 04-07-2004 08:52 AM

I am pretty sure that a retirement accelerates the bonus in the same as a cut. I don't remember the player but I am pretty sure a couple of years ago a (moderately well known) player worked out a deal where they filed their retirement papers after June 1 to lessen the cap hit on the team.

dieselhog 04-07-2004 11:06 AM

Did Ken Harvey not do something like this? Although, I'm not sure we could call Ken 'moderately' well known. I could be wrong. Just seems to ring a bell.

dieselhog 04-07-2004 11:07 AM

Also, how about Irving Fryar?

Skins fan 44 04-07-2004 11:29 AM

What are we doing paying Bruce Smith 2 million ++. I know we wavied him, but I thought he retired.

JoeRedskin 04-07-2004 11:32 AM

Because he was waived, the remnants of his signing bonus were accelerated. Although he has indicated that he is retiring, I do not believe he has filed the appropriate paperwork with the league. Technically, he can still sign with someone else.

Skins fan 44 04-07-2004 12:09 PM

Not to sound dumb, but why didn't we have him retire instead of waive to save cap space? Or is he planning to retire as a Bill and would it affect him retiring there?

To answer the quetion about Holdman, from KFFL.com (4/5/04)

Lions Offer Holdman 2 year Deal

Sources have told ProFootballCentral.com that the Detroit Lions have offered Free Agent LB Warrick Holdman (Bears) a 2 year contract. Holdman, who also has visited Cleveland, St Louis ,Seattle and Washington has been a coveted linebacker in Free Agency. Holdman has played in 59 games (47 starts) during the past five seasons recording 346 career tackles in 5 seasons forced eight fumbles, recorded one interception, one fumble recovery and had 3.5 sacks. Detroit is the only team to offer Holdman a deal so far due to some teams questioning how healthy his surgically repaired knee is and is expected to make a decision by Thursday.

I am pretty sure retirement acts just like a waiver in that the salary cap hit gets accelerated. The only way to take a smaller cap hit is for him to retire from the roster after June 1 (same as a post June 1 cut).

Also, the Skins can't make Bruce retire, he has to file the paperwork with the league office (I think date of retirement affects pension, benefits, etc.). From what I have read Bruce is still thinking about playing somewhere this upcoming season.

BTW - I was wondering, where did you get this number? From what I recall, Bruce had a relatively small signing bonus which should have been mostly pro-rated out by now. A 2 million dollar cap hit seems pretty high.

My recollection was that he had a four year contract with a 3 Million SB, which would make this the last year of the contract with a cap hit of 750K. Maybe I am thinking of someone else.

:laughing-

JoeRedskin 04-07-2004 03:54 PM

]<ing - Note that I didn't say anyone would sign him. I should have said Bruce may be hoping to play somewhere this year.

Skins fan 44 04-07-2004 04:18 PM

JoeRedskin: Thanks for clearing thing up.
I got the 2.3 million on bruce smith from the salary cap figures thread. Click on the 2004 salaries. I bumped for you.

Yeah -- I'm not laughing that you said it, I'm laughing at the idea of him thinking that he has anything left.

skinsfanthru&thru 04-08-2004 01:24 AM

he's still hungering for that elusive ring. I liked him until he started whining about starting and playing more even though he wasn't very productive on a consistent basis. and didn't he also say he wasn't still playing to get the record, but for his team and teammates? what a load of crappola.

dieselhog 04-08-2004 07:58 AM

Smith did so much fence sitting he had splinters in his ass. He wouldn't make the decision so it was made for him, we needed the cap space now rather than later as we wouldn't have been able to sign Marcus Washington and the other guys otherwise.

Skins have improved their offer to Holdman.

Dave Butz Baby! 04-08-2004 02:13 PM
<ing']I don't think anyones signed Gold yet -- Chicago is still talking about picking him up.
Nope, he's still hanging around with a phone that's apparently not ringing. He's asking for entirely way too much money.

Think there's any correlation between said silent phone and the fact that he's represented by some dude named Poston?

Hmmmm....... Could be!

;)

SKINSnCANES 04-08-2004 04:30 PM

We gave him a new offer today, I guess the Skins really want to get him

SKINSnCANES 04-08-2004 07:31 PM

FYI, I met all of the Skins after the game against the dolphins. I was standing next to Snyder when Bruce Smith was complaining about his contract. I have no respect for Bruce Smith or Matt Bowen because they were the only two Skins that wouldnt talk to me or give me an autograph. They were both arrogant, pompus and basically assholes. Matt Bowen wouldnt even look at me, then I watched him take money from his mom to have some spending money, what a chump...
