Eagles ink McCants?
Profootballtalk.com which is an excellant site by the way, and funny as hell, is reporting that the Eagles are close to signing McCants. This one is gonna haunt us Im afraid, but better him then Price.
|
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
McCant knows our playbook and that's probably why they want to sign him. I would if it will give me some insight into the mind of Gibbs.
|
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
As far as this haunting us, it is totally out of our control, the guy was playing like a turd here, and there was no room for him. Sure, he might get a second wind, or find some motivation and pickup his game, but that doesn't mean he was going to do that with the skins ...
As far has him knowing our playbook, I don't think its a concern, this guy supposedly wasn't even looking at our plays. If that was case we would have palyed the eagles better when we got trotter and the giants when we got armstead and barrow. Not to mention Thrash, who you cat bet knew the eagles play book real well .... |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Well I hope that he isn't any better than Trotter was at explaining the Philly blitz packages to Spurrier. Then again I don't think Spurrier even knew Trotter's first name?
I kind of don't like players who stay in the same division. Don't they understand how much we hate our divisional rivals in the East? |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Maybe now he can sing the diddy for McNabb's commercials?
McCant knows our playbook and that's probably why they want to sign him. I would if it will give me some insight into the mind of Gibbs.
The "intelligence" that other teams can gather from signing a player like McCants is very limited. Coaches know opponents are going to sign former players and fill the playbook with dummy plays and formations. Moreover, Gibbs is revamping his playbook and he probably doesn't know how he is going to gameplan for the first DC-Philly game. So, I don't see McCants' signing as a threat to us (at least in terms of intelligence). I expect McCants to make the team. I also anticipate that he will be the #4 wideout for Philly; with Owens, Lewis, and White ahead of him on the depth chart. While I'm not nervous about the signing, I think McCants will do well (for a #4 wideout) in Philly. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
I doubt this will haunt us. Plus I'm hearing that the Eagles are more interested in Peerless Price. Wherever McCants lands....I doubt he'll make that much of an impact.

Profootballtalk.com used to be a wildly inaccurate site. I would often write of their "reports" as pure rumor and speculation. However, in the past few months, the site has been improving. I don't always take their reports at face value, but on occasion they have some interesting "articles." PS-They usually are pretty funny. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
oi, what i was afraid of. maybe that's why Gibbs cut him first round, cuz he's a DOUBLE-AGENT?
hope McCants wasn't paying any kind of attention. |

PFT an excellent site?
I guess it all depends on what your definition of excellent is. LOL |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
I would call it more of a guilty pleasure. You have to take the rumors with a grain of salt.

Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Here's the latest from another excellent site:
Philadelphia Eagles: According to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, the Eagles are poised to add a veteran wide receiver to the roster, but it won't be Peerless Price or Peter Warrick, both of whom were released Tuesday by the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively. Instead, the Eagles huddled with veteran free agent Darnerian McCants on Wednesday, and plan to sign him after their Thursday preseason finale. A club official said the team already has reached agreement in principle on a contract for McCants, but that he had a pass a physical exam and that there were a few other elements that had to be addressed. Additionally, coaches did not want to release a player currently on the Philadelphia roster, since McCants would not be up to speed enough to participate in Thursday's preseason game. McCants, 27, was released by the Washington Redskins earlier this week. He is a player the Eagles staff likes, and has enjoyed some success against the Philadelphia defense, with 11 catches for 149 yards and one touchdown in four appearances. A fifth-round pick of the Redskins in the 2001 draft, McCants fell out of favor with the current Washington staff, but the Eagles feel he can provide a solid No. 4 presence. The former Delaware State standout has intriguing size (6-feet-3, 215 pounds), presents a big target, and might in time develop into a contributor in the Eagles offense. McCants has appeared in 29 games, with three starts, and has 53 receptions for 687 yards and eight touchdowns. Beyond Terrell Owens, the young wide receivers on the Eagles roster have a combined 27 catches |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
well, thats where we thought he'd land, so no real surprises if he ends up there.
he has no injury problems and hasn't had a lot of opportunities or QB consistancy here, the WR corp in philly blows hard, and the QB is better... I think that's just about as good a chance as he'll have in his career to make something of himself. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
I just don't see how McCants gets cut, while Jacobs gets a free pass. Say all you want about speed and potential, it means nothing if you spend most of the time nursing injuries.
With Patten, Moss, and Thrash secured, and Antonio Brown seemingly locking up the main kick and punt returner spot, it meant a choice between Dyson, Jacobs and McCants. Based solely on their performances as Redskins, McCants has by far the most production. You have to give the nod to the coaches using their best judgement, but I don't like the move. |

Gibbs is waiting patiently for Jacobs to heal while McCants is cut and possibly could land a third wideout spot after its all over with. What I didn't like about Gibbs's remarks about McCants was first he compared McCants to Art Monk, then all of a sudden McCants is inactive for all but five games and Gibbs says McCants got lost in his lack of special teams play. Well, as far as I can recall Art Monk never played on special teams. Taylor Jacobs to me is like Cliff Russell, who Gibbs cut last year. A lot of potential, but never healthy enough to even get through preseason. Some guys are not built to endure a serious work regiment and it shows. Lastly, Gibbs said he wanted guys who could play through their injuries, but hell McCants was there and looked good in preseason last year catching a TD from Brunell and where was Jacobs. Injured. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Maybe McCants was concentrating too much on his music career.
|
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
The fact that the staff is willing to wait for Jacobs over a healthy McCants says something.
I don't know what's not being understood here. The staff questioned his work ethic and desire. He's not a good special teams player, and frankly he's not an all-pro or someone who is irreplaceable. We're not going to miss him and I'd bet money that he never develops into anything more than an average WR in this league. We're always saying how we need core guys to build the team around. Guys that bust their tails and are hard workers. He obviously didn't fit that bill according to our staff. People keep hanging on to the fact he caught 6 TDs 2 years ago. Big whoop, is that production that can't be replaced or something?? He's slated to be Philly's #4 WR right now. He wasn't going to be even that here, personally I'd take Thrash or Brown over him anyday. |

McCants isn't a good practice player or very good on special teams, Jacobs is. I've always been a big Darnerien fan, but I understand this decision... |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
If Gibbs didn't want him, that's good enough for me...
Always kinda seemed like DMac had other things on his mind. Too bad. He had the body and hands to be a force. Maybe he'll fit in better on a team where practice and attitude doesn't matter so much. Raiders? |

well he was our tallest receiver, i'm sure a big reason he got some of those touchdowns. would be nice to have had another vertical threat in the endzone besides #47 |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Just goes to show it takes more than height to make a team.
|
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
True, but i hear our main man Portis isn't fond of practicing either. a big tall possession type wideout is about the only thing i see missing from our offense.

CP was at all workouts this year. He practices hard, works hard and is one of the most team oriented players we have. He put on 15 lbs this off season to meet Gibbs half way in their running styles |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
I just want to see The Fun Bunch again. That would be hilarious.
I remember seeing clips of them doing that "high five" in Dallas and the Dallas players tried to get in the middle of it to stop it. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
i wouldnt dream of taking anything away from CP, i've been one of his hardest core fans since the moment the trade was announced. he's as talented as he is fearless. and yes a very hard worker, he'll do whatever he's asked even if its widely reported he doesn't LIKE practice. guess thats the difference, and true, getting rid of all our bitter legacy WRs was probably a good idea. the fact remains, we could definitely use the type of threat McCants was on the team, if not the player himself.

That just happens to be more TDs than any wide receiver caught for our team last year. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?

Key here is WR, because Cooley caught 6. I'll guarantee one of our WR will catch at least 6 this year. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
If he wasn't going to fit in, why not cut him and make room for people who will? Sometimes we get too attached to certain players, wanting them to succeed and they just don't have what it takes...

thats fine, but where's the replacement for his role? |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?

Cooley! biger, tall, slow, good hands... its pretty close, except cooley blocks better. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
Cooley plays the passing TE role, and you can bet he will be thoroughly looked at by defenses every play, and double covered in the red zone.
we still lack a tough, quick(enough), tall possesion WR for over the middle/red zone. what can Moss and Patten really do inside the ten? |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
That just happens to be more TDs than any wide redeiver caught for our team last year.
And nothing that cannot be duplicated or bettered by somebody else wlling to put forth the effort. |

ugh, fine not darnerian, but his role. |
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
again cooley fills his role, you dont need speed if you only have 10 yards to work in, if you want a second, maybe royal, TEs fit his role, cause thats basically what mccants was (minus the blocking)... i don't know why there's this insistance that it HAS to be a WR thats 6'+ and TEs don't count. The arguement you're making is kinda vague and the answer you're looking for isn't well defined.
|
Re: Eagles ink McCants?
TE's don't exactly "spread" the defense to create more opportunities and agreed, you don't need speed (Moss, Patten, Jacobs). you need quickness, to make your defender commit, and physicality, to outmuscle him.
Cooley is a godsend, but we can't be one-dimensional in the redzone. Gibbs has done particulary well with possession type receivers in the past, and not just for the redzone. it's the only thing in this offense that's conspicously missing. |

I don't think we have anyone who fits that mold on the team right now. I wouldn't even say we have anyone with "great" hands. Some playmaker's to be sure, but no viable options as a possession receiver... Inside the ten yard line, I think Cooley will obviously be the prime target with Royal catching some balls. We'll probably use Moss and Patten as decoys (somewhat) when we're that close and throw to the RB coming out of the backfield... |

I think that the opportunity to win some "jump balls" is an important one... I don't see many TE's not named Gonzalez thriving in that situation, maybe I'm wrong... Who's our tallest receiver right now? |
