Taylor on offense?!
 

Was anyone else shocked to see #21 in there on offense?

Should be interesting to see if his role continues as the year goes on, and what exactly he can do in that role.

was a beast at RB in highschool. He does seem to be a good fit for a big WR. I hope we see more, during the game i thought I saw 21 on the field but i thought i had seen the numbers wrong. I was really really high, top Row top deck, but i was surprised by all i could see, I didn't think to much of the 21 just thinking i saw it wrong

Yeah, on Redskins.com they have an article posted. It seems that we're going to continue that... Gibbs seems to be really impressed with Taylor's athletic ability.

This is a helluva idea you can stop alot of things in the league but pure atheletic ability is what coaches fear most. Randy Moss, TO, Antonio Gates these people take planning and even then they will cause headaches against less talented players.

For the game they used him as a decoy...but that was for the game. Who knows what's going to happen next time. I think he'd be a pretty good WR.

I don't get it. How is it that Sean Taylor is playing some wide receiver? I thought Gibbs was out-of-touch, vanilla, too stubborn to change, blah blah blah.

I was really surprised when i saw it, since no one mentioned it or saw it in practice... I guess GW saw taylor's HS tape and they wanted to try it out.

I do think he was just a decoy today (you don't learn WR in one week), but if his hands don't suck, i'd love to see him play a behemoth red zone threat for us. (champ and deion both have played a bit of WR, but their hands are awful, and warren sapp as a TE was a gimmick and a joke too, and smoot wanted to do it, but he couldn't catch either).

yeah i was watching the game with my cousin a bears fan and he pointed it out to me we were in a sports bar and the redskins game had no sound i was like hell yeah!!!!

I have a feeling we could see a decent amount of Taylor at WR in red zone situations. He's a GREAT decoy. Imagine this, we put him in just to do blocking (because we all know, he's freakishly athletic) and then one day we finally throw the ball to him when no one expects it.

The commentators said the defensive coaches of the Redskins kept hounding Gibbs to try him on offense because he's so athletic. Honestly, even if he never catches a TD he's worth it. For someone who's a safety he seemed to attract a lot of attention in the red zone!

Based on what I saw living in PGH when LA was a HS student there they should put him in as a spot RB. He was amazing in HS as a RB. Maybe they could even use him as a kick & punt returner as he was untouchable doing that in HS too.

This is not a good idea putting him on offense. The reason they have to is because they cut every big reciever they ever had. I think it is a terrible idea. He didn't get off of a jam near the end zone and I don't want to see Sean Taylor taking big hits. It's a terrible idea. They should have kept someone that could actually be a red zone threat instead of wack ass Taylor Jacobs or Antonio Brown.

I was going to say the same thing, how many big shots do people typically take in the endzone?

I see him being used primarily as a decoy, and if they do toss it to him it will probably be on some sort of jump ball/fade rather than a route that might expose him to a hit.

My concern is that he can play WR. I don't want him to be exposed the way Champ was. I don't want him to start making plays and then the Skins bring him in and try to get him to make plays all over the field or run reverses to him. That's my main concern.

Another reason I don't like it is because I don't take this as the coaching staff showing faith in Taylor, I think this is an indictment of the recieving corps. While I like Patten and Moss, they're not great red zone targets, niether is Thrash. I don't think Jacobs and Brown should even be on the team.

I guess that's one way of thinking about it, or you could say it's just another thing for defenses to think about.

The bottom line is Taylor is the most physically gifted player on the team regardless of position. Why not toss him in there inside the 5 and see what happens? All around the league we're seeing more of this kind of thing, teams putting their best athletes in different spots in certain situations. I don't think it's an indictment of that position, it's just taking advantage of using your most talented players.

I truly don't think it's the Skins trying to find another receiving threat so much as it (just as Matty said) something else to give opposing defenses to think about and plan for. Not only that, I bet Taylor can throw a hell of a block on someone.

You can look at it that way too. I'm not denying ST's talent. He's my favorite player on the team, next to Ramsey and maybe he's tied with LA, but I just don't like putting him in on the goal line because I'm afraid he'll start finding the field on offense a lot. If he's only a goal line reciever like Vrabel is to the Pats then that's fine, I still think it makes the other WRs look bad.

I don't see Taylor getting on the field on offense unless we're inside the 5.

You said it yourself with Vrabel and the Pats, is that an indictment on their WR corps?

People see the Patriots doing that and they say it's brilliant, we're doing it and you're saying it makes the WRs look bad? It it works I don't think anybody is going to care how it looks.

Defenses will treat Taylor one of two ways: He will get too much respect because no one wants to get beat by a part-timer, or he will be ingored as an obvious decoy. Either way, he makes D coordinators think too much.

That's a good point. I don't think our WRs are anywhere near the class of the Pats, but I see what you're saying. I have a big issue with the WRs on this team after number 1 & 2 anyway. So, that's part of the reason I look it at that way. I still think if we had a big target he wouldn't be in there.

If he takes [B]only[/B] goal line snaps I'm with that. If they become confident in him and he starts coming in to run reverses or he starts coming in to run a few routes a game from our own 40 yard line, for example, I'm against that. I think he needs to stick to the goal line exclusively if he's playing offense at all.

I can totally agree with that. The simple truth is that in today's league, there are goalline specialists. Ostensibly, Nemo is one, although he didn't make the active list this week. If Taylor is to be used in goalline or short yardage situations, that's a plus. If he becomes a 10-12 play receiver, it is exposing him to unnecessary risk of injury and fatigue, and jeopardizing our strong defense.

That's precisely what I was thinking, except I don't see it being used short yardage. He'll come in (during a game like Cow-Whores next week) when we need a [i]WTF?!?!?[/i] from the opposing D coordinator and it'll be enough to back the D up for a critical 1st down. I'm expecting him to be in the slot and running someone over. Within 5 yards, of course. ;)

If he’s just a decoy then it’s worthless putting him out there. I say if you’re going to put him on offense quite a bit throw the ball to him otherwise cut the crap and let him just play FS.

Very exciting to see him on offense. I wonder how much he will be used against dallas, at least it would be great to see roy williams come up for a goaline tackle and get run over by a blocking ST!!! just wondering if ST scores a TD how would that count in a fantasy league? Defensive score or just points against other teams defense?

if you had ST, it'd count in his stats, but if he's playing on offense at the time, it wouldn't go on the D's stat.
