Players you have met: Cool or uncool?
From the sounds of it many floks around here have met a few Skins from past and present. I know I have met a bunch and for the most part they were all cool and one not.
Ones I met that were very cool or kind: Sonny J. - signed a card for me Billy Kilmer - signed a card for me Chip Lomiller - signed a card for me Roy Jefferson - signed a photo for me Gus Ferotte - signed a card for me Charles Mann Sam Huff Brian Mitchell Joe Jacoby [Jake is a BIG man] Uncool: D. Greene - signed a card for me I was the last guy in line and he got up and walked away because his time was done with me standing there. I had to ask him 20 times to please sign a card and say hello to my Son. He finally did but made me feel like crap. My dream is to go to Texas and meet "THE MAN" "Sling'N" Sammy Baugh himself. Who have you guys met? peace |
I met Gary Clark on the club level the first year the stadium opened. I hung out with him for a while, and the whole time he let me wear the 91 super bowl ring. I was in highschool at the time, and it was an awesome experience. Itd be nice to have one of those rings.
I met the entire team last year after the Miami game. Chad Morton was the coolest. B.Smith was a jerk, as was Matt Bowen. Lavar was nice, and freaking jacked. I met Sonny Jergenson to, he didnt seem to want to talk to anybody. Coles said he couldnt sign my program because he had to get on the bus, so I just followed him onto the bus, and problem solved. Champ wouldnt sign anything atfirst either, I had to go up and bug him. I think he only did it because his girlfriend was with him, but i didnt care. |
I haven't met any 'Skins unfortunately.
Being near Albany I do sneak into the Giants camp during the summer, to catch some of their practices. I must say that most everyone I've ever gotten an autograph from has been really cool, even when I'm wearing a 'Skins shirt or hat, in fact it usually gets a rise outta some of them. They're like, what are you doing here with that on! I'll usually just say scouting the enemy. LOL |
Smoot- the man
LaVar- the man Trotter- had to chase down on a golfcart but still cool Armstead- got autograph but he seemed pissed at the world Wynn- nice guy Wilkenson- nice guy, funny Marvin Lewis- seemed pissed but got autograph Ramsey- nice guy Royal- nice guy feel bad for all his injuries Gardner- dick, wouldn't sign a single autograph, cocky Champ- quiet, signed autograph seemed nice Shamar Finney- nice guy got autograph I'm still pissed he was released over pierce |
Oh I forgot
James Thrash - very cool Sean Barber - Very cool Both sinded stuff. Hey Mattyk72 - that's too funny about the "spying". lol peace |
My god, some of you guys sound like fanatical 12 year old girls at a pop concert! Stalking the players isn't allowed.
I haven't really "met" any of the players, but I saw Fred Smoot (my idol) up close, but chickened out when it came to asking him to sign my tit. Instead I let a little kid that was stuck behind me get up front. |
"My god, some of you guys sound like fanatical 12 year old girls at a pop concert!"
Bwhahahahaha! I'm a collector not a GROUPIE!!!! lol too funny peace |
Last season in Dallas I got in the stadium too late to get an autograph, but Samuels did stop and have a short conversation with me. VERY COOL!
Not that anyone cares anymore, but coach Spurrier was very cool too. |
Mizzo - I care VERY much! Spurrier Rules!
|
I like Suppier too.
I still think Dan Snyder ruined what could have been a good NFL Coach. We'll never know now I guess. peace |
Well, I don't think Spurrier is "ruined" I just think he needed some NFL experience with him and to cut the slacking during practice/etc. He made plenty of mistakes, but when his system would click (which we saw glances of) the offense ran extremely smoothly.
|
Barber, and Donnel Bennet are family friends, both are very cool and i wish both were still on the team. Samuels is working on a business project with my mother and he and his brother are both good guys. Art Monk's son played in my local youth football program. He was nice, I hope his son becomes good enough to some day join the skins. LaVar is a good guy He's done some PR work for charities and is also a family friend. For the most part they are all regular people, thats why they get annoyed when people attack them for autographs at inappropriate times, but i guess it is part of the job.
|
Joe Jacoby - won a signed team football at his Jeep dealership's grand opening back in '94
Ray Brown, Sonny Jurgenson, Sam Huff, Ron Middleton - all at a Fauquier county SPCA event that they used to have every year. There were a bunch of no name guys that I met there as well. Jim Lachey - Peebles in Warrenton, VA Darrell Green Art Monk Charles Mann Monte Coleman - know his inlaws personally Ken Harvey Gus Frerotte - ehhh... Stephen Alexander - at Frostburg, he was nice enough to meet me at a side entrance of the dorms to sign a few autographs and hang out away from the crowds. Brian Mitchell I met Charley Casserly before a game once. I was hanging out outside the stadium and he walked by. I said hi and he actually stayed a talked for a few mins. There was nobody else around, so he didn't get mobbed. I'm sure there's more, but this is just off the top of my head. |
The stories are great guys, keep 'em coming!

man I think we are all aging ourselves by the players we've met. Ive had to loko up a bunch of those names...
|
I got to talk to Ramsey for like a mintue at Training camp at the end of the autograph session thing. I was the last guy in his line and he sat there and signed somthing for my girlfriend ( Since I already got his autograph ) and talked to me as other guys got up and left. He was the freakin man, and I've heard the same from everyone else who has talked to him.

Just admit it, you chickened out. We had front line spots, too! You say you gave your spot to the kid, but you just wussed out. Rule #1: Never move for some little kid! (their dad is just using them as autograph bait) *4/19 -- corrected the quote |
Wrong quote, eh Cpayne! 8)
Yeah, that's why we have to go back this year! If I have the backing of the warpath, maybe, just maybe, FRED SMOOT WILL AUTOGRAPH MY TIT! |
Well over the past few years I had to deal with several of the players because of my past job so here's my take on a few of the different players I dealt with:
Stubblefield-A bum on the d-line but a magician with a grill, great guy Charles Mann-polite almost to a fault B. Mitch-a loudmouth, arrogant yet totally loyal if he's on your side Wuerffel-As nice and humble as you could imagine Samuels-quiet, always on his cell phone Kevin Lockett-wannabe renaissance man, will talk about anything but football Westbrook-A total mystery, an ass when the camera is on, but so easy to talk to when there's no camera on even if you ask the same questions And my three least favorites: Lesli Shepherd and Albert Connell-Total waste of sperm, have no redeeming values whatsoever (hope there aren't any Connell or Shepherd relatives here) Darell Green. This one is painful because he's one of my all time favorite players but let me give you a couple of examples of dealing with Darrell. Wanted to do a report about Mitchell's charity work (particularly Thanskgiving day). Got a call from Redskins Park. "Mr. Green would like to inform you that your tv station has two choices if it wishes to continue having him as a guest, drop the story on Brian Mitchell's charity work or do a story on Green's youth life foundation as well." I'm all for Green's charity but the fact that he would shove it down our throats all the time got a bit annoying. Here's another incident. Darrell Green is in studio as a guest for a sports special we're doing. So he's sitting there waiting for the show to start and one of our crew members asks him if he wouldn't mind, when he gets a chance, signing this football for his 6-year old grandson. Green's response "No, what's in it for me?" Still love seeing highlights of Green the player, but I'm no fan of Green the person |
I like Suppier too.
I still think Dan Snyder ruined what could have been a good NFL Coach. We'll never know now I guess. peace
Just curious, how did Snyder ruin Spurrier? Seems to me that Spurrier did a pretty good job at ruining himself. |
My opinion:
Snyder made a Spurrier a coach with one hand tied behind his back as Dan and Vinny made all the deals and picked players. Did Spurrier have the same control over the whole team that was given to Gibbs? I think not and one would have a hard time saying he did. peace |
The only thing I remember Spurrier asking for and not getting was Danny Aweful last year. Spurrier was terrible.
|
Spurrier had a lot of control over who came in. I know Snyder got players a coach didn't want once, and I'm pretty damn sure he learned his lesson. Ramsey, Coles, Trung, Morton, all coveted by Spurrier, and Vinny and Snyder got the deals done. Hrm, come to think of it. Hire Spurrier as our GM. 3 outta 4 ain't bad. (I'm purposefully leaving out most of the other talent flops)
I love Spurrier, but it was his staff and his lack of discipline that got him in trouble, but I think he can still be an excellent coach, unfortunatly it might not be in DC =( |
Hey Matty, I'll join ya for the Giants training camp...I've wanted to go since they've been here in Albany...
|
I never claimed to know 100% of a story but post my honest "opinions".
peace |

Cool, let's do it |
I wonder if I should go to the Dolphins camp... scout them out for our big preseason game matchup. Anyone have an old D.Thompson jersey, mabye I could get it signed...what nubmer was he anyways.
|
B. Mitch!
B. Mitch! That's the list! But my uncle up in Alexandria has a pic with Sonny on his wall, since he used to referee local FB games.
|
Met Joe T when I was a kid. Stood in line with about a thousand other schmucks to get his autograph. I asked him some inane question -- cant remember what -- and he was very nice and talked to me for a bit even though there were others in line. My folks had the privaledge of meeting Harold McClinton a few days before he died. My dad told me he was a very nice and engaging guy.
All this Darrell Green stuff is pretty tough to swallow -- not that I dont believe it. The dude seems like the salt of the earth in his public persona. |
I have met several past and present players, but last season...
I coincidently stayed at the same hotel the Redskins were staying at in Buff. NY. last season. I was there for work, not the game. So I was very surprised when I got into an elevator by myself and a big hand stopped the door from closing. Suddenly as many big people as could fit, crammed into the elevator with me. Much to my surprise the Redskins had just arrived from the airport to the Hotel. I was disappointed because Ex-QB Rob Johnson was standing next to me and not a real Redskin. I was surprised at how small and skinny Rob Johnson is, I could have kicked his ass. I amazed Cerrato/Snyder ever signed him. Did they ever meet him? All the players were very nice and willing to talk. Lavar Arrington surprised me the most. He made himself the most available out of all the players to the fans. He was always down on the ground floor near the restaurant/bar area, meeting fans and signing autographs. When I came home at 11:00-11:30pm on Saturday night before the Bills game, and Lavar was still at a table at the bar hanging out (not drinking) and signing autographs. The next morning (Game day) my breakfast group was sat by the hostess at a table right next to Sonny Jurgenson and Samm Huff. These table were almost too close together. But Sonny and Sam did not mind, in fact they said hello and are incredibly nice and LOL funny. They talked about the upcoming game and Sam Huff was constantly telling old football stories. Very interesting..... |

Will you adopt me so they'll be my family friends too? Just kidding.. I worked at CNNSI when Irving Fryar was an NFL analyst, he sat next to me while we watched the games and we would discuss the games and players.. Lots of funny Redskins stories.. |
Unfortuantly living in jersey the only player's I run into are giant's.
|
Well i have been fortunate to meet quite a few skins through the years..
heres a few. Lavar Arrington, Chris Samuels, John Janson, Ladell Betts Sonny Jurgensen, Joe Gibbs Sam Huff, Bobby Mitchell Kenny Houston, Brian Mitchell, Joe Theismann Charley Taylor, Terry Allen Billy Kilmer, Gus Ferrotte, Ken Harvey Brig Owens, Pat Fischer, Doc Walker, all the "Hogs" Diron Talbert,Mark Moseley, Mike Thomas, Ron McDole Mike Bragg, Dallas Hickman, Monte Coleman, Earnest Byner Art Monk, Darrell Green, Dexter Manley, Cahrles Mann, Dan Wilkinson Gary Clark, Tony Mcgee, Chris Hanburger, Ron Saul, John Riggins and many many more.. the thing i can say about meeting them is that some were very gracious and seemed to enjoy talking with the fans. Its been an honor to meet so many great players from 4 decades of teams.. I have even shared a beer with Roy Jefferson and Rich Milot.. |
One day, my sister and I went to the OLD Redskins Park and hung out trying to get autographs. That was a year of two after the season the Skins beat Denver (Doug Williams MVP) in the SB, so I guess it was like '89 or '90. We got all the players as they were coming out of practice. They signed authographs, but you could tell they weren't pleased and wanted to get home, two guys I especially remembered - Wilbur Marsall and Dave Butz didn't look happy, but they signed.
But the two best of that day were Dexter Manley and Coach Joe Gibbs. Dexter came out in a suit and was interviewed by George Michael. The NBC tv crew let us sit in their van and watch the taping. Coach Gibbs came out about an hour later. NO, he wasn't going home, trust me on that, just doing a quick interview! He came out a side door and was super cool and humble like he still is. We asked for his autograph and he said, "you guys sure you want it? considering the way I coached last Sunday?" (The Skins had gotten clobbered pretty good the Sunday before that's why he said that). Also, I use to work at a car wash near the NEW Redskins Park back in the early 90's. Brian Mitchell came in and got his car washed all the time (it was a lexus) and he was cool, I told him he was the redskins secret weapon and he just laughed. Cool guy, it sucked the way he got run out of town, he's a guy who should have retired a Skin like D. Green. Jim Hanifan (offensive line coach who replaced Buges after he split to Phoenix) and his wife came into the carwash all the time, too. They drove Ford Tempos and the ashtrays were full of cigarrette butts and there was cat hair all over the car (they let the cats roam freely in the cars). Kinda gross, but they were super nice people, too. Skins would come by the carwash all the time - Chip Lohmiller (also drove a lexus) and a bunch of other guys, whose names I don't even remember (special teamers who lasted a year). Finally, I saw Joe Theismann at Hertz rent-a-car at Dulles Airport once in the early 90's (long after he retired from the Skins and he was working for ESPN), he was real friendly, smiled, shook hands. He liked the attention, just like he still does. |
yea Joe seems like a really friendly guy, as long as your name is Lawerence Taylor...such a sad day for football.
|
Ok, I've never met any of the 'Skins, but the Redskinettes do come over on USO tours pretty regularly. I had them on my morning show in Keflavik two years ago.
|
yea Joe seems like a really friendly guy, as long as your name is Lawerence Taylor...such a sad day for football.
The crack, snapple and pop heard 'round the world. |
Did anyone of you see Willis McGahees knee injury. Seeing his leg dangle because it wanst connected by any tendons was not a pretty sight either. In mens health a few months back they had a story of teh top ten sports injuries. I beleive Joe was second. Some of them were pretty gross.
|
In 99 I came over and met Irving Fryar who was really funny, so Big daddy in a huge white suit but didn't speak to him and met Gary Clark outside the Giants game, tried on his SB ring and got two autographs (I only asked for one but I had two gameday programmes and he cherrfully offered to sign both).
I also met a lady in Takoma who had been a season ticket holder since 1937 but went to the new stadium once and hated it. She showed me jerseys that Gus Frerotte had given her (Washington and Detroit) and said he was 'ther nicest player of any I have ever met). Also, the UK Redskins Review guys were out in 99 and Art Monk showed them around the stadium. Finally, when the Skins played an American Bowl at Wembely a load of our guys spent the night drinking with John Riggins who posed for photos, signed stuff and got extremely drunk... |
