The Dirtbags
Quietly, our offensive line is having a strong beginning in these games. Granted they have given up some sacks and CP only ran for 90 yards last week (Betts had like, 34yds) but it must be taken into consideration that Jansen is playing with 8 FINGERS! I don't think Denver has faced an O line as good as ours yet. KC was missing Roaf and Jacksonville doesn't boast our talent. This will be the key to Sunday's game: How well the O line protects MB and opens holes for CP and Ladell will decide the game. As the season progresses and the line continues to jell, look out.

Love Them Dirtbags

Re: The Dirtbags
Dirtbags will be on NFL Today by week 8.
Trying to be humble as we get trashed all over the media. |
Re: The Dirtbags
I am surprised that with the exception of the Chicago game, we have been winning thanks to our passing game. It seems like the boys are really pass protecting well, but not run blocking so well.
|
Re: The Dirtbags
Someone please update me on Jansen's thumbs. I would like to think that first one he broke would be close to getting well. Wasn't it August when he broke it?
|
Re: The Dirtbags
I think it is. I heard that the one he first broke will be in a smaller cast very soon.
|
Re: The Dirtbags
the run blocking has been average at best. pass blocking has been great
|
Re: The Dirtbags
I'm really surprised we've struggled a bit running the ball. We definitely need to get Portis cranking soon.
|
Re: The Dirtbags
There's no reason for us to believe he will this weekend besides the fact that it's DENVER, but something is telling me he'll break out of it this weekend.
Maybe it'll be the fact that they won't be able to load the box because our passing game is so much better, I just feel it. |
Re: The Dirtbags
Jansen is playing with 8 FINGERS!
Uh, yeah... What the hell does an OLineman need fingers for? To get holding penalties? I think they should put them in fingerless gloves and be done with it. There is FAR too much holding in the league, it is hurting the game. |
Re: The Dirtbags
The O line has been doing a good job. We only gave up 1 sack last week and that was in the 1st quarter. We need to be able to run the ball. If they want Brunell to last a season, they need to open some holes. The passing game looks alot better than last year, but I dont see a lot of different things in the run game. I dont see us running the zone runs that they were suppose to put in this offseason, no sweeps, very few if any screens. Portis is our playmaker w/ moss. We are getting the ball to Moss enough, but Portis is just not getting the ball in space where he is dangerous. maybe thats something that will come with time, but it hasn't yet.

Re: The Dirtbags
Holding is an art, and dont tell me your lines have never held 5Rings.
|
Re: The Dirtbags
what are you doing showing your face on a Redskins website. The helmut NOT having a star on it should send a clue. Dont even talk trash on this site. You are not welcomed here. I didn't see any of those Dallas d-lineman getting past Jansen. Man, Jansen could be on one crutch and still hold off your team. get real, find a Dallas site!

I wasn't talking trash, I was talking about holding in the entire N-F-L. Actually, that helmEt with a star comes from an option on this site, so I think the creators of this site envisioned something more than 1000 posts that say GO SKINS!!!!! And Skins 16-0!! WOOO!! |
Re: The Dirtbags
Holding is an art, and dont tell me your lines have never held 5Rings.
I just think that the amount of holding means that guys who are Massive can latch onto DLinemen and slow them up. If we got rid of the excessive holding then maybe OLines would not be averaging over 310 lbs in the league. In general I think that offensive line play has gone downhill since the late eighties and early nineties. |
Re: The Dirtbags
what was the deciding factor is that d-line man back in those days were so small, 270 to 280lbs, and when the hoggs for example, jacoby was the biggest and he was 300 or 310. when the dline man started getting bigger the oline man had to adjust to make it in the NFL. the only team I see that is the exception to that rule is the broncos and maybe KC. They use alot of stretch plays that uses the lines athletic ability rather than brute strength. That wont fly in the NFC east. you know it and I know it. thats why these teams are getting LBs that can run like DBs. They can cover alot of ground. and these safeties now are huge. Taylor is LB size and runs like a corner. The whole NFL is getting bigger. But you have got to have speed in todays NFL defenses.

Re: The Dirtbags
I for one do think it's retarded that there is an option to have a cowboys helmet for an avatar on this site.
I don't come here to trash talk with the likes of you. I come here to discuss with fellow Redskins fans, KNOWLEDGABLE FANS. If you eliminated all grabbing of any kind from the game, like you're suggesting, scores would be 3-0, 7-3, 6-3 every single game in every single week. You know nothing. |
Re: The Dirtbags
i havn't even said anything about all the grabbing. I think there are foolish holding penalties called in the NFL. But you have to call the obvious ones. They are trying to eliminate the holding and contact with the DBs to increase scoring, dont know if that has worked yet haven't read any stats to support it. There is now way you can try and stop holding and pulling down, there would be a penalty on every play if they did call the holding and pulling down that goes on. I think they do a pretty decent job for what they have to deal with on the field. I wouldn't want to be out there with 300lb+ line man running at me, linebackers running over me to get to the ball. QBs throwing darts at my head to hit the receiver across the middle. Oh, sorry you aren't talking to #56 fanatic are you, you talking to DALLAS guy right? if your talking to me, then refer to the above.

When I watch a Football game, I love to focus on what I consider to be the heart of the Sport and that is line play. To me there is nothing like watching a pulling Guard bend a Blitzer in half with a well angled and well timed block. When a lineman holds - and here I am talking about pulling a D lineman down or sideways after the o lineman has been beat, I am not talking about grabbing his pads over his chet an locking the man down tight - all it means is that he has been beat. How many holding calls negate long runs and scoring plays because an O lineman got beat and held his opponent? Denver is constantly drafting and TEACHING O linemen how to play in space and move their feet while it seems most everybody else just draft miniature Apt buildings and teaches them how to hold and not get caught. |

The NFL would go south in a hurry if zebras were painting the grass yellow on every other play while scrutinizing holding calls. It's just not practical. |

Au Contraire, I am exactly the kind of guy who just wanted the NHL to call what was ALREADY in the rule book!!! When they stopped calling the stick fouls the game got plodding and low scoring. Guys with no talent got by through hooking and holding. They made a real effort to change that mentality and so far it seems like the players have stopped all the stick fouls - or at least accepted that they will be called for it. I think the same would happen in the NFL if linemen were held accountable for holding infractions, unless you think hockey players are somehow smarter than Football players and O Lineman couldn't figure out how to change their style of play. |
Re: The Dirtbags
Hey. Easy now on 5 rings. He was just making a comment about holding. He wasn't trashing the Skins. He has been on here before and has been classy and made some astute observations. So take it easy.
The point I was making about 8 fingers isn't about holding. It's about the god awful casts that he has to wear, which don't look too comfortable AND that a broken thumb MUST be friggin' painful. And he has 2!! I imagine it limits his full ability in some way. Not for holding.... which EVERYONE does from time to time. |

I have to disagree with this one. I would have thought that by the fourth game of the season, Samuels, Dockery, Rabach, Thomas, and Jansen would have established themselves as among the top five offensive lines in the league. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Portis has had 3.6 and 3.0 yard per carry averages against the Cowboys and Seahawks, respectively. As a tandem, Portis and Betts have yet to crack the 4 yard per carry average this season. Plus, this line has allowed 10 sacks over three games. While Jansen's broken thumbs certainly are a hinderance, I don't think anyone would rationally try to argue that the line would be significantly improved with just two more operable digits for Jansen to work with. Our undefeated start does tend to gloss over things over a bit, but not since the second half against Chicago has this line really taken over a game. For this team to continue it's unbeaten streak, the line play must get better. That means better pass protection, and more holes for Portis and Betts to go through. With more playing time and healthy starters, this O-line can be among the top five, but they're not quite there yet. |

Dlines would become even more important and offenses would be toned down (And that's really bad for ratings), so i never think that'll happen. Old school football used closed fist blocking on olines i believe.... total slugfests. |

dblanche66, and That Guy,
thanks for the back up. This site has been a good place to talk football and NFC East Football. I do go to cowboys sites as well, but sometimes you gotta admit seeing GOOO COWBOYS!!!!! about 50 times gets old. I understand that people will at first wonder WTF! go to a Cowboys site, but I think most have been very open and reasonable once the first dagger has been thrown. |

Thats a mighty strong opion for someone that just joined this site this month...After 5RINGS joined actually. Theres no need to be a jerk. Having fans of other teams make sites like this better because it keeps everyone in check. As it is theres plenty of opinion that are made with the 'red glasses' on, and that takes away from an educated discussion way more than an opinion of a fan from another team. |

Re: The Dirtbags
The hawks were stacking the box during a number of CP's runs. Teams seem to know when we are running the ball.
