I swear I wish I could do something that would change the pathetic refereeing of all of the NFL games. I swear the calls get worse every year and to say "it's just a game" or "mistakes happen" would be one thing if this were Pop Warner Football and everyone was playing for FREE. But when a bad call can theroeticly effect MILLIONS of Dollars, Player's Careers and in some cases Citys to fall.

Good calls are far too important to be left to Part Time Employees.

Department of Labor says this is all a guy has to do to qualify to be an NFL Ref.

I say they should be full time employees and be practicing, studing current and upcoming Rules, watch films, going over their mistakes, getting physically fit and so on just like players have to do. The NFL has enough money to keep less than 100 guys employed fulltime to get this done.

The worst thing is that NFL refs are part timers. It is not like this is the 60's and the NFL is barely making money. Instead of having these guys work in the off season most of them have other jobs. The refs could be spending the off season watching video and and (gasp) getting in shape so they can keep up with the plays. I realize that they are human and make mistakes, I realize that we the fans have the benefit of TV and instant replay but the NFL needs to do more to put these guys in a postition to succeed.

Yesterday was defintley poor officiating, and there are far too many games, Redskins and everyone else included, that are decided by bad officiating. I wouldnt say yesterday we would have won if it werent for them, but there were defintley questionable calls that could have changed the outcome. Its like that in alot of NFL games, and it shouldnt be.

Yeah, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Every coach in the NFL has appealed to the NFL at one time or another for a bad call. You can't just stop complaining about it, otherwise there would be no pressure on the refs or the NFL to get the calls correct. The outrage needs to be there for a reason.

That ref in particular needs to be fired. He was indecisive on many calls and needed too many conferences with his officials. He obviously wasn't a confident guy. I wish there were 16 Ed Hoculis. First off, with 16 Ed Hoculis you could have great officiating in every game. Secondly, with 16 Ed Hoculis, you could sack Troy, storm the beaches of Normandy, and successfully defend the Alamo all in one week. He's ripped.

i know some have complained about the calls yesterday but this thread is not just about "the game" we played yesterday, it is just saying what could be done to make it better for the FUTURE like KC

LOL, other than when he does Eagles games, he's the best athlete on the field most games! He would have dropped T. Suggs if it was his face that Suggs got all up in!

That was a joke of a performance on the refs' part. Honestly I can count 3 bad calls or lack of calls. Cooley was clearly interfered with, the ball in the endzone was a safety, and that TD called back on o-interference was complete bullshit! If I was Gibbs I would be getting fined through out the week for calling the refs out.

And his point about my point is correct. I NEVER mentioned the Denver game in my topic about the State of NFL Refs. I said I don't like the entire system of Refs and the massive damage stupid calls cost.

I think if some things are challengeable then everything should be challengeable. It is toally inconsistent to have the ability to overturn some calls while not others. Every call can cost a team a game and to say basically that you trust the officials to make some calls but noth others sounds ludicrous.
I think there also needs to be something done about this crap where they decide to arbitrarally enforce some rules and not others. Why the hell have the chuck rule for a decade before you even start to enforce it? Makes no sense at all.

No there is nothing you can do about Denver, I agree. Hell, we might not have won the game if it was called perfectly, who knows. But we need to bitch, because this garbage is getting rediculous. Not just during Redskins games, but in the NFL in general. These guys decide so much in every single NFL game and it shouldnt be like that and I'm pissed off about it. Especially with intsant replay, you should be able to review some of these game changing, major penalites. Especially when they have phantom calls...whatever I'm pissed about it.

I saw a piece about the refs...they explained that after each game the coach gets to grade the officiating crew, if there are complaints, then the head ref reviews the game...they get demerits for poorly officated games and if they reach a certain point level for poorly called games, then they are fired.........

I hope Gibbs scored them an "F"

Unless, as fans, we rise up and challenge the NFL to change their rules they'll continue to have poor reffing. It really hasn't cost the NFL a damn thing because we're all watching next week regardless of how pissed off we may be.

Many of the major penelties are open to interpretation you really need to look hard at how to review them fairly, any little touch could be called pass interference. They also may not have the camera angle(s) necessary for a lot of these challenges.

On a side note -- If a coach challenges a play and the ref doesn't have any type of video to show the play, or at least clearly (players in the way) does the challenging team get to keep that challenge and timeout? Or are they charged automatically?

Refs were awful in the MNF game as well. Ward's 46 yd TD catch that was overturned was one example of a game officiated almost as bad as the Redskins game.
