Better coach
 

This may piss a lot of people off but after watching an interview on comcast with Greg Williams,I wish he was the head coach. He as an attitude that I just dont see in Gibbs. When the team screws up Gibbs says well,we played hard and we never quit,blah blah blah. Williams was pissed and it showed. He dont try to sugar coat what went wrong he points fingers. GOOD! tell it like it is for a change. Portis fumbled and cost us 7. Gibbs woulda said, well it was a wet ball. Maybe so but GW said it was in his stomach and he dropped it. I like Gibbs a lot but when he calls it quits I sure hope Danielmoneybags can keep GW . A coach needs to be feared and respected not just respected.

I disagree.
Gibbs is the man and is proving it. GW will get his turn in due time.

joe gibbs always says that turnovers end games, he always talk about the stats, hell he benched ramsey and cut brown due to turnovers. I am sure the players respect gibbs, but you said that he is not feared. Well i wouldn't want to fumble on that team.

I want gibbs to coach now and tommorrow and tomorrow. THis is his job till he wants out, for whatever reason. He has 3 years past this year and he will fullfill them plus more maybe. then GW can be head coach, when Joey G decides to step down whether that by 3 5 7 9 50 years from now

You're right he is a very enthusiastic coach with a lot of emotion. I believe when Gibbs finally retires again this will be G.Williams team.

Hard to question a 3 time superbowl champions coaching ability.That rah rah tough guy stuff only goes so far before players tune you out.Gibbs is a master at motivating people to get the most out of his players.3 superbowls 3 different QB's and running backs now thats coaching.

GW would not have even farted in the direction of the Redskins had it not been for Mr.Gibbs. I'm glad you can appreciate the genius of Joe Gibbs to persuade GW and Joe Bugel, Greg Blache and Clinton Portis to come to Washington. Gibbs has done in one in a half season what we could not do with better players in the last five seasons. Win three close games including the greatest comeback in recent history. Don't be so quick to jump off the ship after this lost.

Three things: Gibbs has won three Super Bowls and gone to another, so I don't think he has any problems motivating and kicking ass. Plus, his past players and current ones revere him.

Which leads me to my second point. Gibbs may sound one way in public and totally rip his team behind closed doors. He's a very private and prideful man. I don't think he would allow the media to see a side of him that only players and coaches know him for.

Thirdly: Every one has different coaching styles and ways of kicking ass. When Gregg Williams wins his first Super Bowl, send me an email.

This is what I am hoping for. I'm terrified that another team will see what he's done with the defense and lure him away with a head-coaching gig. I want him to stick aroung and inherit the team.

Trust me, by now other teams know what Gregg Williams can do.

If he does happen to leave, I think Blache and Lindsay are very capable DC.

Yes he was. He did a pretty good job there. He had a top five defense too.

Joe Gibbs is the kind of old school Coach who is too proud to yell at his players in public. He's the kind of parent who wait until you get home and tear your ass up after disobeying him. Don't let his calm presence fool you. Joe Theismann has said on repeated occassions that Joe Gibbs will tell you off behind closed doors. He doesn' believe in airing out his grievances in public. I respect that in this day and time.

Head coach and defensive coordinater are 2 different animals.If he becomes head coach he will need to hire a Joe Gibbs like mind to run his offense.But thats getting ahead of ourselves.Joe Gibbs was, is,and will forever be the man in D.C.

True....even as the head coach at Buffalo he didn't do a terrible job.

I for one think that GW is benefiting from working with an offensive genious like Gibbs.

I remember a game in Gibbs first tenure when the skins were getting thier asses kicked in the first half. They said at halftime Gibbs was kicking chairs and screaming about heart and character. When he came back to the sidelines, he looked cool as a cucumber.

Don't be fooled.

First of all, it's not like Gibbs went and convinced Portis to come play for us. We said here's a pro bowl cornerback and a 2nd round pick -- gimmie.

Also -- While Gibbs' offense looks great and completely revamped this year, I still think he has a little ways to go till he's an offensive genius. We're moving the ball just great, but as a genius he needs to find a way to put up points. We're just not coming away with quite enough, in my opinion.

Greg Williams is an amazing defensive mind, he mixes and matches and coaches his defense like I coach my madden team. Cornerbacks playing defensive end (my Madden team, not Williams!) and he really fires me up watching him on TV without a doubt. If Gibbs didn't have the history he has, I'd agree completely that GW was the better coach. However, thanks to his history Gibbs demands respect from the players, fans, and media. That respect has translated into a revitalized orginization.

The real question is how long will Gibbs stay here. He made no bones about the fact that the only reason he came back was for Coy, his son, to learn how to coach. Coy wanted to coach, he told him how awful it is and how much work and stress it puts on you, yet that's what Coy wanted to do. If Coy decides he doesn't want to be a coach and decides to leave, what happens to Joe? If Coy takes over a more important position than "quality control" and fails miserably -- what happens? I think as Coy goes as does Gibbs.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think he loves coaching and he loves the Washington Redskins, but I also think he's getting older and older and coaching is a lot of work and stress, especially if you aren't winning (which looks to be changing!). So Gibbs leaving early wouldn't suprise me at all.

Both coaches are great but in different ways. Leave it at that.

Coy might have been part of the spark that got Gibbs interested in coming back, but I really don't believe Gibbs comes back unless his heart is in to this thing 110%. Gibbs came back because of his love for the franchise, the fans and the city. He came back for the challenge of doing it all over again.

Gregg Williams hasn't won anything as a head coach.Don't believe he even made the playoffs.He couldn't even hold Joe Gibbs jock strap when it comes to head coaching.

I think Gibbs came back to get the program straightened out before leaving it again. I hope he goes the full contract but I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave at the end of this year or next.

You are correct about saying one thing in public and ripping the team behind closed doors. I remember Dexter Manley relaying a story, when the team was losing at half time and Gibbs was so angry he dumped over gatorade and broke his hand on a blackboard because he was so angry.....and he must've put fear into the team because the Redskins came back and won the game...so yep, he shows a different side in the locker room.

Williams is a great defensive coach, but he has yet to prove himself to be a great head coach. Gibbs has proven that he is an excellent coordinator and head coach. Williams might be a great head coach in the future, but Gibbs already is one.

There's no comparison. Gregg Williams is a mastermind defensively, but he had a rough go as head coach with Buffalo, so to even entertain the thought that Williams would be a better head coach than Joe Gibbs....I just want to see proof! So far, there is none. Maybe down the road possibly....and if it is with the Redskins...then hopefully. However, I would challenge anybody to go back and watch today's press conference. If you don't think Gibbs is intense, you're just not paying attention.

Joe Gibbs is slowly proving himself once more and proving all his critics wrong.....we've already had several fans having to eat crow, and it's just a matter of time until the media and the rest of the league join in with a big heaping of it as well.

No insult intended, Daseal but this just shows that you're not old enough to really remember Joe's first tenure and the kind of guy he is. It would surprise me GREATLY to see Gibbs leave before his contract expires. He has so much integrity, heart and fire that he won't go until he brings the trophy back to DC. PUT IT IN THE BANK!!!!

As long as he's healthy and the team fights every week I think he'll be here atleast another year and probably the full length of the 5 year contract. I think Williams will be a shoe in for head coach if he stays the length of Gibbs' tenure. Both of them seem to get along well and respect each other greatly. For know let's hope they can get us into the playoffs and beyond this year!!!

I love Williams press conferences--always get me fired up. And his defenses have been great. But Gibbs has a range of skills in dealing with people that Williams lacks, IMHO. Gibbs has a way of getting the most out of people, whatever it is that they do. Did his NASCAR team thrive because he was an "offensive genius"? No, it's becuase he knows how to manage and inspire people. Williams is a tough dude and will rip you a new one, no doubt. But GIbbs gets into people's souls.

I'm totally into Williams, but he has yet to do it as a head coach. I believe he will some day, because he'll have had the privledge of learning from the best.

14-18 and last or second to last in the division two years running isn't that great a job. He also told the media how stupid they were constantly which really didn't help him. JG is a much better HC right now.

I would certainly agree with part of your post. I think you did piss off a lot of people! However, the remainder hs been thoroughly covered.

dblanch -- I don't think Gibbs will have a choice if he leaves early. It may be because of Coy, but I also think his health status may not be up to the task. I think that's the biggest concern as far as his coaching longevity. It's a lot of stress and work, especially for someone as old as Gibbs.

Joe Gibbs is rather healthy - healthiest he's been in years. At least, as healthy as a diabetic can be. Keep in mind also, he's not the oldest coach in the league. Dick Vermil is much older than Joe Gibbs...and let's not forget the offensive coordinator for Indy who is in his 70's! JB isn't feeble. Of course now, if we keep playing close games like we have been playing, all of us are going to have heart conditions by the end of the season, LOL!
