Why is David Patten on this team?

I have to tell you David Patten should be cut and is not worth a dime the money he is getting!!! :spank: All year he has done very little. The one area this team is with out is someone to go along with Moss at wideout. In the game today he had a ball go off him for a INT. It was not Brunell's falt at all. On a 3rd down[I beleve] Patten went down field then stopped and turned around waitting for the pass. He was hit and ball was turned over. ALL NFL receivers know you are going to get hit if you stand there! He need to go towards the pass so the hit isn't so bad!!!! But he didn't do that!!!! At this point in Patten's NFL career this shouldn't have happen. Patten is not the 2nd WR that this teams need so badly! :Flush:

I wouldn't go so far as to cut Patten. But I've really been disappointed in him. I thought he would come here with a chip on his shoulder, determined to prove he could succeed outside of New England. And he'd give us a dependable receiver in clutch situations. But it's just not happening.

Can he return punts? Can we swap Patten and Thrash's roles?

Are you saying you want Thrash as #2? Cause that's a mistake. I'm not impressed by either of em, but I have more faith in Patten than I do in Thrash. I didn't see the pick, so I can't talk about that, but he made a decent play on a 3rd down (maybe 2nd) slant route. I just don't think either are a great fit.

Well, I think our #2 realistically is Cooley. So I'm guess I'm saying let's try Thrash as our #3. Patten has been hit or miss, more miss.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

I agree with Cooley being #2, but I disagree with installing Thrash as the starter. I don't know though, niether have done much of anything on the year, so I don't know who would be the better option, so I will say again, I have more faith in Patten than Thrash

saskin 11-13-2005 08:21 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

There's something very wrong with the Patten-Brunell connection because Patten is the only reciever that Brunell can't hit on a route without having Patten to stop and wait. I'm pretty displeased with Patten, the only passes he was getting were those screen passes. In the beginning of the year Thrash looked a lot better for a #2 reciever but he hasn't been doing much either....I don't care who it is, but we need someone to step up for #2.

skinsguy 11-13-2005 08:22 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

We're talking about #3. Right now, I would rather have Thrash as our third receiver than Patten, based on the season so far.

Patten blows! When givent he opportunity to make a play, he constantly chokes. Where the hell is Taylor Jacobs?

Patten has been a disappointment so far. I agree with Tafkas in saying he should've had a chip on his shoulder to prove he could do it outside of New England. I don't know where we should go with him, but i wouldn't cut him.

patten and thrash are simply there as bodies with numbers on their back gettin paid. they aint worth a shit. Moss, cooley, betts, sellers are our receivers.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

What Patten has been good for is drawing the pass interference call. There was one that could have been called in the endzone against the Bucs but we weren't at home. Patten doesn't have the awareness to make the big plays and he certainly can not block worth a damn.

i think we misuse patten he is extremely fast
he should be runnin qiuck slants right across the middle and his speed is one of the reasons brunnel may be having trouble connecting with him and why defences feel the need to cause interferences, well see i think you guys give him farless credit then he deserves

19 for 193 after what? 9 games as a starter... i'd say he doesn't deserve much of anything right now.

patten's hands have been very suspect this season, which is rather suprising. im sure that next season we will once again be looking for some help there

You hit it on the head, he's very good on crossing patterns where he can run away from the defender.

As far as Patten stopping and waiting for the ball on comeback routes, Gibbs has been useing that play forever, Art Monk made a living on those type of routes, the problem is you really should have a big physical reciever who can body up on the defender, we really don't have that right now.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

I still think Patten is a good #2 choice because he always give the possible of a deep threat while Moss draws doubles. Thrash can't really move as fast as Patten therefore wouldn't be considered a deep threat in turn allowing safeties to cheat more. I think it's foolish to think about cutting Patten, but he's gotta step it up to be able to complain about not seeing enough passes. It was easy being a #3 or #4 WR in NE. But he was quite sure handed. All I know is he's better in the slot in madden drawing a #3CB!

The key here is that he needs to have the big plays, not just be possible to get a big play. So far this season he has not had a big play. The threat is not really there. Once Brunell and Patten hit on a couple of big plays then Defenses will respect that. So far the only big play Patten had was against the Eagles where he drew that PI call. I think that he is still getting used to the system. Next year he should do better. As for cutting him that is totaly crazy!! :woot:

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

He's not going to get many more chances with the way he keeps dropping balls each game.

BDBohnzie 11-14-2005 10:22 AM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Drops aside, Patten isn't getting many looks. With Moss being a deep threat, and Cooley being underneath, Patten is basically a 3rd or 4th checkdown during any pass play.

It just seems to me that Brunell is content in throwing the ball to Moss. There have been several times this year where he's forced the ball in, rather than hitting an open Patten.

Is it because of the hands? Who knows? I do know that Thrash is no #2 receiver.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

patten is warming the seat for Brandon Lloyd, who is a free agent next season.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

I've been wondering the same things about Patten and Jacobs. I can understand Thrash not being a #2; he's more of a utility guy who blocks, plays special teams, and occasionally catches a pass. But Patten should be getting more receptions, and I would've expected a big play or two from Jacobs. I almost wish we had kept Jimmy Farris and cut Jacobs.

12thMan 11-14-2005 03:44 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Patten's lack of production makes Taylor Jacobs absence even more worrisome...surely he would see this as an opportune time to crack the lineup or even get significant playing time.

I guess this is it for Taylor Jacobs with this team. Nine/ten games into the season and he's yet to contribute leads me to believe he's not the one.

But I think the combination of Cooley/Sellers...and even Portis more than compensates for Patten's lack of production.

TheMalcolmConnection 11-14-2005 03:55 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Maybe by putting Jacobs in they'd be "fixing what ain't broke". I'm sure that Patten does things that don't show up on the highlights. Scoring points were NOT the problem yesterday.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Brunell looks for Moss and then Cooley and then dumps it off to Sellers or Portis. I don't see a lot of plays being call for Patten as the first option. Patten is obviously not getting separation from his defender, otherwise he would get more balls thrown his way. I mean the Skins must study film and Patten must not be open much. I felt like he got more looks yesterday than his has in several games. I agree with Malcom however, points were not the problem yesterday. If you would have told me before the games started that the Skins would havce scored 35 points, I would not have worried about them losing,......... but they did.

even if he is just as good as gardner, which i do not agree with i think hes better, he has 3 superbowl rings i believe, a ton of playoff experience, and he can help the team out that way with that experience and leadership.

Moss is faster than Patten. And Brunell has no problems hitting him with passes. Personally, I'm not impressed with Patten. I've seen Patten drop way too many passes for a veteran.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

He has dropped some balls, but I wouldn't count him out just yet. He did look really good in training camp, and I think he'll come out of his shell soon enough. He didn't get alot of looks at first, and so we'll see how all of that goes. I can't say I haven't been dissappointed, but I wouldn't say he doesn't need to be here. I want to give him a chance (a whole season). Who knows, maybe he doesn't do much now, but then makes some clutch plays and takes us into the playoffs at the end of the season?

SmootSmack 11-14-2005 08:42 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Maybe part of it is Moss. I don't know for sure, but I think the Skins were probably envisioning Moss and Patten almost as 1 and 1A.

But Moss has far exceeded anyone's expectations as a dominant number one receiver. And this has probably forced them to change their plans for Patten.

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Like MalcolmConnection, I don't think that our problems lie with our offense. Wow, did I just say that? Yup, our offense put us in a position to win yesterday. Our defense lost the game.

Even though I have a problem with our defense, I don't think our secondary needs fixing. I'm an old school kind of guy and I believe that a defense starts with the front four. Unfortunately, our front four stinks at rushing the passer (save Griffin). What we need on defense is a edge rusher (see Abraham). I truly feel that we would have a top 3 defense if we had Griffin and Abraham on our line with our current lineup at linebacker and defensive back.

skinsguy 11-14-2005 09:02 PM

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

I do agree that it starts with our front four. We need a better pass rush from them. The problem with the secondary is, if someone goes out with an injury, we appear to lose alot with our coverage abilities. I think when our secondary is healthy - Taylor, Clark, Springs, Harris....we're okay. However, when one of those guys is injured, it really appears to be magified 100x for us!

Re: Why is David Patten on this team?

Well the problem started in Dallas on Sept. 20th at about 12:15am when most people had gone to bed and only the diehards (or drunks) were still up watching Monday night football. Brunell in a matter of 4 minutes found his man. Now Patten needs to prove to Brunell why he should start looking his way more often. Patten is having a Gardner season he will make a great play then a bad play. He needs to show that he can be the guy to go to game after game and if you haven't noticed you hear Thrash's name called less and less as the season goes on. We have not had any or enough teams shut down Moss forcing Brunell to find other options and until that happens its Moss/Brunell all day long.

it looks to me like brunnell only looks for moss and cooley...i like patten, he has speed and a winning track record. I wanna know what is wrong with taylor jacobs? he was a stud in college, and acts like a dud for us. maybe this week he will show us all what he's got...I sure hope so.

His SPEED is why Brunell cant hit him? Patten is just such a blur that Brunell cant even see him? Well Brunell seems to hit Santana "Im just faster than the rest of the NFL" Moss just fine!
