Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Its what, week 10, and our 1st round pick hasn't done enough to replace Walt Harris as the starting corner. Is anyone else worried about this? I mean, I know Champ was a higher pick, but he started almost immediately. Shouldn't Rogers be contributing to this team by now? In light of the fact that Priouleau (I never spell that right) and Harris were getting burned like a dime bag at a Grateful Dead Concert, isn't now the time when our No. 1 pick steps up? So far, he's done nothing to justify such a high pick and Ive been really disappointed with his lack of development.

You're going to catch hell for this post, but I completely agree. He also got torched by the #3 wideout yesterday too. I'm willing to let that one slide for the time being since it's the first time I've seen him get beat deep, but at the very least, he plays very soft coverage. I'm sick of seeing him give a 12 yard cushion on 3rd and 7. He is a much better tackler than Walt Harris, but they seem to be about equal on coverage, so I guess it's a toss up as to who should start. And Champ was only three picks higher than Rogers. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
the league is tougher that when champ entered and he got the tutledge of D.Green and Deon Sanders...We should hire Darrell as a consultant for the young corners
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Still way too early to say if Rogers is overrated or not.
He's a rook and Williams and this entire staff is reluctant to toss a rookie in to the fire when there is a quality vet ahead of him. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
I didn't know that Rogers was 'rated' to be overrated. I put a whole lot more on Walt Harris' shoulders than Rogers. Harris got beat for 2 TD, I only saw Rogers get beat for one deep ball..
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Walt Harris, I knew he was gonna be a problem and he is. we need Carlos to step up. I think this game is a wake up call and I expect Carlos to start next week.

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Its a little to early to say Rogers is overrated. The kid isn't starting to begin with. To compare him and champ really isn't fair to him either. Champ coming in as a rookie was better than most DBs in the league to begin with. Champ is a once in while corner to be that good early. Carlos will be a fine corner once he learns the position. He is going to get beat as all corners do. What I find unacceptable is the way Harris and Proelue(however its spelled) played. They are veterans, they should know what to do late in a game. And to let a scrub in Shepherd get past you, not once but twice on the same drive is unacceptable. I dont know that benching Harris is the answer, but Proelue definately needs to be benched. He is to help the corners over the top and he was repeatibly late and in some cases no where near the play, especially the last touchdown. He was going towards the line of scrimmage!! Taylor being out hurt ALOT. I hope he is back next week with Moss and Porter coming to town or its going to be a long day again. We have to find a way to get pressure on the QB. Week in a week out we are sending 7 to 8 guys and getting no results. We will get picked apart if that trend continues. I dont know what has to happen to get pressure, but the players we have in there right now are not getting it done. LaVar missed 3 sack opportunities yesterday by a matter of microseconds. Daniels , Wynn, Evans and co. have to step up the rush. Marcus, Lavar and Marshall can not be counted on every week to get to the QB. And lets throw out the corner blitz, we get burned everytime Springs rushes. Why is he blitzing anyway, he is out best cover guy. If you are blitzing a corner, bring carlos, or bowen they are a little more physical in trying to get past RB in backfield.
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Plus, its not as if Rolle, Jones, or even Mike Williams are tearing it up in their rookie years either, and it was alock we'd end up with one of them. I still feel like Rogers is probably the best out of the three CB's. Williams might still be a good player but he has major discipline problems. People can say we should have taken Demarcus Ware but its not like anybody was advocating that at the time, or that that was ever a realistic scenario with the ninth pick.

Walt harris is a nickle back nothing more he sux...carlos cant be worse..how do you let a man get behind u with 3 mins left .... |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Rogers will be fine. Pac Man on the other hand is over rated.

:laughing2 Thats pretty much the funniest thing Ive read in a while...thats for taking some of the sting of the loss away this morning... |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
watching harris getting torched the last couple of weeks leaves me wondering why rogers isnt in the mix more.then yesterday rogers comes in and gets burned right away.the pressure corner g williams has these guys playing relies on getting to the quarterback, which we all know isnt happening

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Way too early to tell with Rogers.
But I thought (and this is surely stating the obvious) that the pass D was very badly exposed yesterday, top to bottom. Lack of a consistent pass rush from your down four leads to a need to blitz, which leaves you in single coverage. And most NFL recievers are going to beat man-to-man a fairly high percentage of the time. The injury to Taylor was a big blow in that department as well. I'm all for aggressive D, but leaving your corners out on an island late is sometimes a recipe for disaster. But that's the sort of D we have right now. But it wasn't a particularly bad strategy--Simms had thrown picks when pressured, so applying pressure was a smart call. The bucs didn't blitz much and we killed them with the run and the short/intermediate pass. So, as Gibbs said last week, it's a chess match. And then it's about execution--our DBs and blitz didn't get it done, Simms and co did. |

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Also, take into consideration that Rogers is still hampered by an ankle injury, which he's tweaked on and off since training camp. I don't think this kid is 100%, not that anyone is at this point in the season.
Hopefully with him he needs to get more reps in, and yes, at this point I don't think him starting would hurt us any more than what we've been getting. |

I rate him as a rookie playing a tuff positon to jump right into. Like a QB its hard to expect even at top 10 dafted CB to be impact player his rookie year. Time will tell.. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
It's way too early to judge Rogers cause he is till a rookie. Come next season, well, that's a different story.
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
I guess the real question is this: Is Carlos unable to break into the starting lineup b/c of inconsistent play/talent level, OR is it because Williams doesn't want to put a rookie out there? I was gonna say its b/c he's a rookie, but Sean Taylor started after about 4 weeks. So that makes me think the kid is just not that good, but I really hope Im wrong.

I personally don't expect anything more of him than you do. I agree, he is a rookie and is going to make mistakes. The problem is, being drafted in the top ten brings along certain expectations from the media and the general public. And if he continues to play like he has thus far, this time next year 90% of the people on this site will be screaming that he is overpaid and overrated. Although his grace period might be a little longer since it was Gibbs that drafted him. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Let's all remember that even though Rogers isn't starting it doesn't mean he isn't progressing. Sean Taylor could have started right away last year with his ability and he still didn't make his first start till the 5th? week vs. the Bears.

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
the thing that bothers me is that he is a 25 year old rookie. he had a great year last year in college, but how much of that is due to him being more mature/diciplined than the other guys around him?
you dont need to learn very much to play corner. alot of it is based on instincts. champ was a 20 year old rookie and played well. guys like dre bly, smoot, antoine winfield, nate clements all stepped in early and struggled at time, but they showed flashes of a bright future. the onlything rogers has showed is a 20 yard cushion... |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Think that is due to him or Williams?

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
I agree that right now it's to early to determine if this pick is a bust or overated, it's to early to call you need at least 3 years to truly see if a player has develop in to it's potential.
Now during the draft I made a lot comment of how Pac Man and Rogers where being pushed as top players just pecause they where CB and the new need and price value of quality CB I think that bout went higher that they should. The only thing that worries me is that it's mid season and you have a top 10 pic on the bench the only way he will get better it's by playing look at us Newman and Williams where top 10 pics and they started since day 1 Newman had a good first year and a average second now he's having his best year because we now have quality secondary players to help him last year he was alone. What I'm saying is that he should be starting right now and for him to not start it tells me that gibbs doesn't have confidence in him look at us we have 6 rookies playing 3 starting (Ware 11, Spears 20th and pettiti 6th round), they made some mistakes at the beginning but right now they are becomming a force in their position respectibly. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Look at D'Angelo Hall. He played like SHIT his first season now look at him...
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
WOW D'Angelo didn't play like shit his first year he played bad the first few games like all rookies do and showed flashes off a good player at the end of the season he was playing good and didn't got beat that much there wherehigh hopes on him this year and so far he has showed it.

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
2004 Atlanta Falcons 10 35 28.0 7 0.5 2 50 25.0 48 1 4
Not exactly stellar... I'm not saying he hasn't improved, but he definitely was getting some dirty looks his first year. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
You have to see the stats not so lineal if a player is making 8 int in a season you could say he had a great season but if he was trown to his side more that the other corner or got beat for more completions and deep passes you could say that the other CB had the better season and the other team didn't respect him that much yes he took 8 home but maybe gave 20.
Champ didn't had amazing stats each year but other QB respected him and tried to avoid him as much as they could. Deion also didn't had amazing stats becasue No-One trew his way. D'Angelo Was getting challenge and beat at the begginig of the season like all rookies but at the end Qb was starting to avoid his side and didn't challenge him that much he still gave some away but as I said and he was I of the rookies that showed more last year. |

Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Even if your position tha tthe head coach doesn't have a say on the defense and Williams calls all the shots I'm sorry yes Williams prefers veterans but he has played Rookies in the past if a player shows he's capable on handling the job he will put it he hates dumb mistakes thats why he preferes veterans but he won't deny a Rookie to play if he belives he gives him the best chance to win and be succesfull.
And right now not williams or gibbs believe he gives them the best chance |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
he's already had injury trouble and some missed training camp... sean taylor who has all world potential didn't start till his 3rd game and he idn't miss any practice time up till then.
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
exactly third game you have played 9 games all ready how long for him to be starting this year if he doesn't start next week after a bad game vs Tampe of the other CB what that tells you
|
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
williams obviously likes harris somewhat, on the other hand...our FS was matt bowen...there is some difference in skill there fellas

Actually Deion wasn't on the team until Champ's 2nd year and as I remember Champ had a very good rookie season. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
For everybody saying that Rogers should be playing, I'd like to know where your blind faith in the coaching staff went. When Brunell was named the starter a lot of us heard, "Who are you to question Joe Gibbs" or "To think you know more than the coaching staff is asinine."
What happened to all that? How come no one is getting laid into for saying that Carlos Rogers should start. As for Walt Harris letting a guy get behind him with 3 minutes left, Rogers did the same thing with like 5, maybe 8 minutes left and it was the same guy. Rogers has been on the field primarily as a nickel back and hasn't excelled at that in the least. And finally, every analyst around the NFL generally accepts the theory that Cornerback is the easiest transition from college to the pros. So comparing it to a QB's transition to the NFL isn't even close. It's apples and oranges. |
Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Corner is the easiest transition from college to the pros??
Who said that? It's usually thought that RB is the easiest, corner may not be as difficult as QB, which is the toughest position in all of sports, but corner is not an easy transition and certainly not the easiest. |
