Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051122/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_hall_of_fame_semifinalists
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and perennial All-Pro defensive end Reggie White head a list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Other modern-era semifinalists are linebackers Harry Carson, Randy Gradishar and Derrick Thomas; center Dermontti Dawson; running back Thurman Thomas; wide receivers Michael Irvin, Andre Reed and Art Monk; defensive ends Fred Dean, Richard Dent, L.C. Greenwood and Claude Humphrey; quarterbacks Warren Moon and Ken Stabler; guards Russ Grimm and Bob Kuechenberg; offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman; cornerbacks Lester Hayes and Roger Wehrli; punter Ray Guy; club owners Art Modell and Ralph Wilson, Jr., and administrator George Young.
Russ Grimm made the cut, too!

I really hope he gets in, but again this is a VERY tough class. He should be in, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

My prediction... he won't get in.

Re: Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

I don't think he will get in at all this is the toughest I see yo ucan only get 6 in the hall and this hasn't happen your top candidates are:

Troy Aikman (sure)
R.White (sure)
J.Madden (sure)
W.Moon (sure)

That leaves 2 spaces if they ever give them.

D. Thomas (80%)
T.Thomas (70%)
M. Irving (70%)
A.Reed(50%)
Monk(50%)
and maybe

Art modell
Hayes

or the other senior
R .Wright but I see maybe five being D. thomas or Irvin

How many time has he made the semi-finals

I think there is some obscure rule with the semi-finalist list that if you are on once you are always on until not eligible, so Monk being there is no surprise...if he makes the first and second cut then we have something to talk about...

That doesn't sound right - I thought players never lost their eligibility.

Awesome thing is, I told my wife that if Monk ever gets in, we're going. SO every year I watch closely to see if he makes the list. Has anyone even been to the Hall induction ceremony? I wonder how hard it is to get tiks and how much they cost. I also wonder if every friggin hotel for 100 miles in every direction is booked months in advance. I hope this is the year that Monk finally gets in!

Man I didn't notice if you read the complete post I wrote Irvin name correctly on the bottom I didn't notice I had spelled it wrong.

And I'm sorry Monk was an excellent reciever but to say he was better than IRVIN come on IRVIN change the way the wr in the league played they had to change the prototipal CB after him to a more physicall and bigger one because IRVIN just tossed them around.

He was a force on the field and a big part of a dinasty, sorry but I give any day better chances for him to get in that 2 Monk.

Monk was a big strong, physical receiver as well. Even though he didn't appear to be as fast as other receivers we've had on the team (Gary Clark, Santana Moss, etc...) he always found ways to get open downfield. Even when he wasn't exactly open, he still was able to haul in the pass. I am not taking anything away from Michael Irving, I thought he was a great receiver as well, but there is nothing between the two receivers that would suggest that Art Monk lacked anything from getting into the Hall of Fame before Michael Irving. In all honesty, Art Monk should have already been in the hall of fame.

Yes he should he was a great receiver but he hasn't got in yet and this year with all the big names I just don't see it happen and right now Irvin is the better of the 2, Monk hasn't made a top 6 candidate ever Irvin did it i nhis first year and he should had been inducted last year as harris and wright when they made the top 6 in my opinion it's dumb that the committe put players off after they reach the top six if six can get in then put six in.

For that matter I didn't think Young deserved to be there not as a first ballot for that matter.

Michael Irvin was the master at the push-off. It's not so much that he was more physical than any WR before him. He just got away with pushing off a lot. And even he would admit that

lets give props to mr irvin for being a top notch receiver but the only reason anyone would put him ahead of mr monk is strictly due to personality.mr irvin has the loud, look at me type and mr monk is classy and quiet.i would love to hear mr maddens opinion on this

Re: Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

Every day I pray that Art Monk gets his due. He deserves to be in the HOF. For what he did for the Redskins, the NFL prototype WR and as always lastly Art Monk himself. Team player, no incidences with cocaine, hookers, guns and hookers, friends with Deion, etc. Art is a reserved, thoughtful true man and was an incredible football player. I often wonder if the Redskins had not let him go to the Eagles if he wouldn't be along side Gibbs coaching at some compacity. My brother always said whenever Monk gets in we're going to Canton. Thank you Art Monk and you're no BS, team style of playing. Goodluck to you and your journey to finally be inducted into the HOF. To put Irvin in before Monk is favoritism, BS, facetime money and well total disreguard for stats when the player left the league. March on Art Monk march on Redskins!

The thing is, back in Art Monk's playing days, his name was always mentioned amongst the top receivers in the league: Steve Largent, Jerry Rice, Henry Ellard, etc...I think the only advantage that the other "big names" have this year is the fact that they might still be fresh in people's minds. But, as far as all the tangibles and intangibles required for Monk to make the hall of fame, he possesses them all. It's just a shame that the hall of fame committee won't vote him in because they just don't like the guy.

does anyone have the career stats of both so we can compare?im sure monks career stats are better than irvins,by a country mile da boyz also says young didnt deserve it,alittle bit of sour grapes because of what those niner teams did to the cowboys back then?in my recollection, young was one hell of a qback, well deserving of canton
Rank Player League Yrs. No. Yards Avg. TD
5 Art Monk NFL 16 940 12,721 13.5 68
17T Michael Irvin NFL 12 750 11,904 15.9 65
Granted, Monk played longer, but it's at least a country mile. Monk is the highest rated eligible receiver not to be in the HOF. The fact that all but three of the names on the list (Largent, Lofton, and Joiner) retired AFTER Monk underscores how amazing his stats are.

EDIT: I forgot Lofton retired before Monk.

Re: Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

I believe longeivity in the league should also be considered. It's a tremendous feat for any player to play on a high level for longer than ten years nowadays.

D'BOYZ 11-25-2005 11:21 AM

Re: Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

yeah but if you divide the stats between the years

monk has an average of 795 yards per season and 4.25 td per season while Irvin has 992 yard per year 5.41 td per season.

And if you take out his last season when he got hurth in his fourth game that ended his carrer you talking about an average of 1,067 yards per season and a 5.63 td average per season way above monk and even if you take monk last year when he played only 3 games his stast would be 840 yards per year and a 4.53 td ratio.

they both have 3 rings the only other difference a see is that monk was a 3 time pro bowler and irvin had 5

onlydarksets 11-25-2005 11:39 AM

Re: Monk makes HOF semi-finalist list!

The bottom line (IMHO) is that this is all Jerry Rice's fault. Monk obliterated the reception record. If not for Rice re-obliterating it (much more convincingly, I might add) a few years later, Monk is a first ballot HOF'er and we would not be having this conversation right now.
yeah but if you divide the stats between the years monk has an average of 795 yards per season and 4.25 td per season while Irvin has 992 yard per year 5.41 td per season.
According to that logic, Larry Fitzgerald is better than either of them because he will average over 1000 yards and 8 TDs a season after his first two years?
And if you take out his last season when he got hurth in his fourth game that ended his carrer you talking about an average of 1,067 yards per season and a 5.63 td average per season way above monk and even if you take monk last year when he played only 3 games his stast would be 840 yards per year and a 4.53 td ratio.
Um...let's not get into the "what if" game, OK? Who cares what Irvin "would have done" if he hadn't gotten hurt? Imagine how good Irvin would have been if he could have laid of the crack pipe!
they both have 3 rings the only other difference a see is that monk was a 3 time pro bowler and irvin had 5
So, longevity means nothing? What about the fact that Monk won his rings over a 10 year period, whereas Irvin got them in 4 years? That suggests Irvin was consistently surrounded by talent, whereas Monk perhaps had to work harder.

I see nothing where that would justify Art Monk not getting into the hall of fame by now. Again, I'm not saying that Irving doesn't deserve to be in the hall of fame, but there is no excuse anybody can feed me that would justify Art Monk being snubbed every year since he was first eligible.
