Michael Irvin nailed on dope charges

Ex-Cowboys star Irvin posts bond after drug charge
Nov. 27, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

PLANO, Texas -- Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his vehicle during a traffic stop, Plano police said Sunday.

Irvin, an ESPN analyst and semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for speeding in Irving after being pulled over Friday afternoon for speeding in Plano, the Plano Police Department said. Police spokesman Mike Johnson said he didn't know what kind of paraphernalia was found.

Irvin paid a fine on the speeding ticket and posted bond on the drug paraphernalia possession charge. He was released about an hour after he was pulled over.

"We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

Irvin, a member of three Super Bowl championship teams with the Cowboys, retired in July 2000.

In 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.

Irvin holds Cowboys records for catches (750), receiving yards (11,904) and 100-yard games (47), including a team-record seven in a row in 1991.

Who cares.

The sale, possession, and use of all drugs and all drug paraphenalia should be completely decriminalized.

He says that a friend who was recently out of rehab gave it to him to despose him (I think). I'm inclined to believe him. I think a lot of Michael Irvin and I know a lot of you don't like him just because he was a Cowboy, but I like him and I think he's very entertaining. I hope this gets worked out for him.

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

To be honest, his story just dosen't sound very beleiveable. It' not likely that one with a history of drug involvement would be speeding down the road with a friends' pipe with the intent of eventually disposing of it. Maybe someone will buy his story but to me I can't omit the history.

#88 may or may not have some drug issues, But I will always remember #88 for what he was, a locker room leader, an On field playmaker, and the guy who got the hottest hookers to the team parties........

I kinda feel bad for the guy.

If he's smoking crack again that's really sad and it's not a funny situation.

If he's just toking some hippie lettuce, well I can let that slide.

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

I'm upsed about this because this will surelly hurt his HOF chances and as you all said if he went back to drugs thats no laughing matter your talking about a person screwing his life.

The easiest way to end this is putting him in to a drug test so we can find out if he really puffed the magic dragon.

He seems a little too hyped up all the time to just be smokin' the chronic.

I agree 100% Matty. It too bad he has this problem that he will likely never beat, and I feel bad for the guy. I liked him on ESPN because he was outspoken and made the show entertaining. I hope he is able to get some help and beat this addiction before it kills him.

True, despite how I felt about him during his playing days, I did hope he turned his life around. He could have easily retired, sat at home in his mansion, and do all the drugs he feels like, but chose to continue to keep himself busy and productive, whether it was arena football commentating or ESPN. Hopefully this is just a minor setback.

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

I like Irvin now that he's retired, but c'mon dude, it's obviously your pipe, this blaming it on your friend is ridiculous. I mean it seems like he would have had to been jacked for the cop to search his vehicle in the first place. I mean was the pipe in plain view? How did he not know it was there? Irresponsible, is all I can say.

Couldn't have said it better. I actually like Irvin on Espn and the radio. Why would a cop search your car unless something was in plain view or he was doing something wrong? For a guy that has had his history you don't dispose of a "friend's" pipe, do you? Come on...I thought he had gotten his life together.

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

You know the police didn't find any drugs in the car? And given his past, I would like to believe he does all he can to help people who have drug problems. I am inclined to believe Michael Irvin.

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

dan patrick asked him if he was going to take a drug test, and he said he'd talk to his lawyers and then went off about how his calling in life is to help everyone with drug problems.

in other words, I refuse to answer on the grounds that i'm GUILTY. dan patrick told him his excuse sucked and that drug users tend to be good liars, and irvin instead of getting defensive said "are they?" the whole interview came off as damage control, but without saying he was in any way considering taking a drug test, it just came off as meaningless.

seriously, if he wanted to toss the pipe, he could stmp it and toss the pieces down a storm drain in under 2 minutes. In under 1 minute he could call up espn and say "i'll take a drug test". He didn't do either, the first caused the problem, and until he does the 2nd, it'll continue to dog him.

he was talking about it on the show for about 2 minutes, well i can say he sounds a lot more convincing than TO did in his appology. He says he talked to his lawyer and he will do everything that is neccassary to clear his name, is that taking a drug test???

jdlea 11-28-2005 07:44 PM

Re: (Merged Thread) Michael Irvin Arrested on Drug Charges

There are a lot of lawyers who would advise against that for whatever reason. Most people involved in cases don't even talk about them, I'm not surprised he didn't say that he flat out would take a drug test. Then, it didn't even come up on NFL Countdown. Not surprised by anything he said, I just want to believe him more.

His story about patting down his friend and taking his pipe to throw out later is a total crock. I'm sorry but that's just a lame ass story and I don't believe it for one second.

I have to admit, I have grown to basically like Michael Irvin and enjoy his ESPN commentary. I listend to the Dan Patrick interview with him yesterday. I was VERY disappointed when pressed by DP "are you going to put this to bed and take a drug test"? He mumbled some BS about checking with attorney's, possible legal hangups, blah, blah, blah!!!!! makes him look guilty in IMO

Why didn't I think of that when I had an open container in my car??
"Really officer.........I took it from my alcoholic friend so he wouldn't drink it..........a breathalyzer????.......you don't think I was drinking that do you???"

I personally believe that the Hall of Fame should be reserved for players who were not only great on the field, but served as role models off the field. To me, those are the players who should be recognized. As great as MI was when he played, I believe things like this should hurt his chances. What about the guys like Art Monk who quitely did their job on the field and appeared to be role models off the field?

maybe the lawyers advise against drug testing because their clients would fail...
