Free Agent DE's

So does anyone know of any good DE's out there that will become free agents after this year is up that we might possibly try and pick up?

Re: Free Agent DE's

well dwight...... If the cap is high next year and we can some how afford him i am willing to do a lot to get him, even if that is all we get because that position is by far our biggest problem, i can pick up a TE in the draft and CB will be fine by next year as Rogers will be money by then, but shawn is getting old.

Mario Williams

2006 NFL Draft Prospect

from Dane Brugler

Position: Defensive End

School: North Carolina State

Status: Junior

Height: 6-7

Weight: 285

40-Yard Dash:

Positives:
A tall, quick pass rusher, Mario Williams has been a starter in Raleigh since his freshman year. He has outstanding speed and long arms to get around the offensive tackle. Williams has amazing athleticism and compares favorably to Julius Peppers, lengthy and fast. He has a quick first step and always seems to find the quarterback. Williams is durable and an NFL ready prospect.

Tamba Hali

2006 NFL Draft Prospect

from Dane Brugler

Position: Defensive End

School: Penn State

Status: Senior

Height: 6-3

Weight: 265

40-Yard Dash: 4.75 (EST)

Positives:
An experienced pass rusher, Tamba Hali might be the most polished of all defensive ends in the 2006 NFL Draft. He is a natural athlete with good size and speed to match up at the next level. Hali sprung to the top of the draft board with his phenomenal senior campaign. He is a leader and a workhorse. Hali has put up big sack numbers and was a main reason for Penn State’s success this past season

Re: Free Agent DE's

see...the thing is though...the colts arent just gonna let prolly the best d-end in the game leave. They'll def. look to either lock him up to a long term contract...or franchise him or something.

The only thing stopping them i guess is that they're prolly gonna have to make some choices...since edge will also be a free agent (he is their franchise player this year) and i think reggie wayne is also a free agent (speaking of wide receivers to compliment moss...lol...i chuckle a little at the thought...cause he would prolly be expensive...and not only that...but i am still one of the few blind optimists who thinks jacobs is gonna be good...and i guess he's got a 5 game audition left to prove he can be a viable 2nd receiver.)

Back to Freeney though...even if somehow the colts did let him get away...im really not sure what kind of cap room we would have to sign him...cause practically every team in the NFL would go after him...and we would have to sign him to a disgusting danny-sized contract...which im not sure would be good for the future of the team??

What about abraham? Are there others?

Oh...regarding those college d-ends...they both look good...but we dont have a first rounder this year...soooo...maybe get one in the 2nd round...or...i guess if we cant get one in free agency...and thats really our big need for next year...they could look to possibly trade up in the draft...though i really am not too keen on continuing to gift wrap our furture picks away. We really need to stop doing that. Maybe we get something for Ramsey if he leaves after this year...?

Re: Free Agent DE's

Abraham should be a free agent as the Jets are $30 million over next year's cap and can't afford to franchise him without stripping the roster bare. The Colts are in a similar predicament and cannot afford to keep both Mathis and Abraham. However, all three guys are going to cost a bundle.

I expect us to give a hard look to very good, but sub-Pro Bowl caliber defensive ends like the Packers' Aaron Kampman.

I would think we could package Ramsey up and possibly pry Abraham from the Jets. Those guys you posted above sound nice, but where we gonna' get the 1st round pick to sign them?

Re: Free Agent DE's

Willams is going to be a monster but he might go top 5 if not definatly top 10.

Hali is a great DE and he will make an impact as a rookie. I would love to get him. We might be able to get him with an early second rounder. I could see him falling into the second round since he just really came on as ai senior plus I think his 40 time might be a little bit slower than the 4.75 that is shown. I wouldn;t be surprised if we traded up into the first round, remember Joe has made a draft day trade every year he has been back (Cooley, Campbell)

Fortunately, the Jets are in cap hell and are currently projected to be $30 million over the cap. They can't tag Abraham without stripping their roster clean. Thus, he's going to hit free agency.

That said, I would prefer that we not sign him and go after an up-and-coming end like the Packers' Aaron Kampman. Kampman won't break the bank, but he'll break his back for the team. He is a good pass rusher and run stopper. I'd like to see him signed, a TE, and a #WR and that's about it.
Really? I haven't seen much of him. He won't be a Phillips Daniels will he?
No, he shouldn't be. I'm in Packer country and I've seen a lot of him. He is a highly underrated young DE. He's just 25. He's been improving every year. His rookie year he had just .5 sacks. His sophomore year he had 2 sacks. Last year he had 4.5 sacks. This year (with 5 games to go), he has 6.5 sacks and 3 FFs. He's got a motor that just won't quit.

He likely will never make the Pro Bowl, but he's a rising young talent that is versatile and is an excellent starter. We should scout and try to grab up and coming players (like Kampman) instead of going after guys who we will be paying for their past performances instead of their potential. We could probably grab Kampman and another top notch DT for the price we'd pay to get Abraham.

What scares me is many of the DE and DT prospects people have wanted us to draft in the past have done absolutely squat in the NFL. It's such a hit or miss position.

Re: Free Agent DE's

What I think people are forgetting is the collective barganning agreement has yet to be signed. If that is not signed by a certain date, which apparently is more likely NOT to happen, there will be NO SALARY CAP for the next season. Which, out of any team in the NFL, we all know who will spend, spend, spend and spend some more. The Freeny thing could be a possibility if there is no cap, but dont look for us to go out and sign him if there is a cap. We dont know what is going on with LaVar in the offseason yet, that has some cap implications there. As well as Brunell, I know he is playing well this year, but if we continue to lose are we going to keep at 35, next year 36 year old QB on the roster and waiste time developing Campbell? dont think so. There will possibly be a deal w/ the Jets in the offseason w/ Ramsey since they are not sold on Pennington any longer. Plus Ramsey will be in the last year of his contract and not cap hits will be taken, other than the salary we were paying him anyway. There are alot of if and buts right now, but I would definately entertain the trade for Abraham, and draft a DE. We need two because I think both of ours stink. 3rd round I think we need to try and find a stud MLB. Marshall is servicable, but not a dominant MLB that good defenses have. Our corner situation can be addressed in the draft as well. I hope we start building from the draft rather free agency. We need to start building a TEAM, not just piecing one together.

Re: Free Agent DE's

I'm not sure if an uncapped year will result in more spending since teams won't know what the long term implications will be for a new CBA.

TheMalcolmConnection 11-29-2005 10:17 AM

Re: Free Agent DE's

I would think you really couldn't stop teams from spending at will in the offseason. I think that when a cap really does get approved after that, they would take the mean of the salaries and create a cap based on that, because I'm sure the players wouldn't mind making all that money. I wouldn't think they would be able to be like, "OK, Well you just signed that person to this huge contract, now cut 30 members of your team."

First of all its Hali not Hall. Brown was injury prone even at PSU. Most of his injuries in college were minor and he played through them, plus he was so good in college that people over looked them. Don't think Hali will be like Brown just because they are both from PSU, if that was the case why wasn't William Joseph the next Warren Sapp.

Re: Free Agent DE's

I doubt we will go after a DE or D-lineman in the draft. It will have to be in free agency. The pressure to produce wins next year will be tremendous, and given the learning curve for a rookie D-lineman/pass rusher, they can't simply step in and produce immediately. Not to mention, most of the drafted rookie linemen/ends end up injured in their rookie year (a la Kenechi Udeze).

The Abraham for Ramsey deal looks imminent at the end of the season.

I read today that the Jets have their eye on Brees.

I'd guess that whoever the Chargers go with as their long-term guy, either Brees or Rivers, the Jets will look to deal for the odd guy out.

i'd love tapp in the draft, but he'll be gone soo fast and we don't even have a first round pick.

even 2nd string pass rushers would be much better than what we've got... the chargers can stop the run AND get a ton of sacks, so i don't buy blache's cover story of either or. if we can't get a big name, just get someone young who's been improving and has 2-4 years of nfl experience and at least 10 sacks to his name.

psu can you name one good d lineman that has come out of p state in the last 20 years?i didnt think so.without the 4 sacks against ohio st(i think)what would mr hali stats look like.he had a career game against them and i for one am not ready to draft someone that the skins need to make an impact pronto on one good game.wheres dave butz when you need him?(i know,im showing my age)

Re: Free Agent DE's

once again you are wrong....he had 4 sacks against wisconsin great game,
vs. osu he just had the game winning play when he sacked troy smith and caused him to fumble

...for the season he had 62 tackles, 17 for a loss, 11 sacks (even without the 4 vs. wisconsin he had 7) and a forced fumble. If you watch any PSU football you would know he was constantly in the backfield in a conference known for their lineman.

Re: Free Agent DE's

that greenbay guy someone mentioned earlier...sounded like a good idea...

I like the idea of investing in guys who show lalot of promise but have not yet established themselves as stars in the league...cause that is where you can get great deals...

That is what happend with marcus washington...we invested in a good emerging player...gave him a reasonable contract...and it is in washington...that he truely blossomed and turned into a prowbowler.

That being said...i also dont understand where all this "trade Patrick Ramsey for John Abraham" talk came from. If Abraham is going to be a free agent after the year...and as someone said the Jets are heinously over next years Cap....then they wont be able to afford to Franchise Abraham anyway...and he will hit the free agent market. Then we could just sign him (to an expensive contract) without having to give up Ramsey...

Im not saying we should do it...cause again i would prefer getting someone who is emerging...who at the very least would be solid and inexpensive...then having to take on a monster contract...

But im just trying to understand where all this trade Patrcik Ramsey for John Abraham talk is coming from???

Seriously, what the F#*K is your problem? Please offer some support for a comment like that (and please note that this is a different PSU Skins fan). The reason PSU isn't in the championship game is because they lost a game. Period. That's not too tough to figure out. As for the BCS, while I would support a playoff format, the BCS system actually favors PSU this year. It's the reason PSU is #3 and not #4. It's also the reason PSU would play in the championship game if Texas lost........because the computer polls love PSU this year. So PLEASE, show me some support for the abundantly ignorant comment you made.

As for PSU D-linemen, I hesitate to even address such a nonsensical argument because an attitude like that would have never seen the drafting of Jerry Rice (after all, who was the last great WR to come out of Mississippi Valley State?), Andre Reed (after all, who was the last great WR to come out of Kutztown University?), Randy Moss (Marshall), Brett Favre (Southern Miss), Ladanian Tomlinson (TCU), Dwight Freeney (Syracuse), Larry Johnson (PSU.....all PSU RBs are busts right? Ooops, guess not). Want me to continue? I can if you haven't caught on yet. Nevertheless Anthony Adams and Jimmy Kennedy are currently both starting D-linemen for their respective teams, and either one of them would represent an improvement over our #2 DT.

All of that being said, do you think the reason you feel it's impossible for you to "have an intelligent conversation about a penn state player with a penn state fan" is more about you than it is about the person you are having a conversation with?

This is slightly random (and Im looking real hard for the silver lining here)...but it will be kind of nice to not have to spend money on a first round pick this year and be able to put it into quality free agents. I am often wary of paying top dollar for D-line prospects in the draft...seems like the second biggest risk after QB.

Minor and insignificant point: Larry Johnson allegedly shoved a girlfriend at a bar. He's not married, and he's not even been accused of "beating" anyone up.

And given that Sean Taylor is still welcomed on the team, I don't see how L.J. couldn't also survive on the Skins under Gibbs.
