What about a TRUE GM
Do you believe the Redskins would be in better shape if we had a true GM running the shoe, and Joe simply coaching? As proven in his 1st tenure, Bethard and Casserly were the brains behind the opporation, and Joe simply worked his magic on the sidelines.

Re: What about a TRUE GM
I cant think of a team yet that has had success with the coach acting as both coach and GM. Its too big of a job for 1 man to handle. The skins need a GM in the worst way. They will continue to flounder until they get a knowledgeable person in this job.

Re: What about a TRUE GM
Despite what people may think, Gibbs had a say in personnel during his first tenure. He wasn't simply the head coach.
I'm not sure if a GM is really needed simply because I don't think talent is the main problem right now. I think we have a relatively young team with guys who are still learning how to play together and learning how to win. I definitely agree our later round drafting hasn't been anything special and that's an area of concern. Whether a GM can swoop in and magically cure that problem is a question mark. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
Totally Agree.
Question??? For the last few years, before Gibbs, did the Skins pretty much have an ineffectual scouting program or abandon the use of scouts? Did Joe and company expand and increase the scouting department/program? |

However, if they disagreed they would come to an agreement or Mr Cook would make the final decision. Casserly and Bethard built those championship teams from the ground up through the draft. Selecting all the HOGS, Monk, Clark and so on. Gibbs may have had a few decisions, but for the most part the GMs made the decisions. |

They prepare a sheet of potential free agents or draft picks and have a grading system. These are then given to DANNY for approval or disapproval in going after certain players. To my knowledge they have developed a scouting program better than what was in place before Joe got there. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
I thought, I read last year that it was a high priority with the new regime to expand that facet of the staff

Re: What about a TRUE GM
I thought, I read last year that it was a high priority with the new regime to expand that facet of the staff
I think I remember where they hired a previous player to head up the scouting department, but I can't remember who that was. Maybe it was Warren? bottom line is , they need someone who can come in and make the personel decisions and take Vinny, Pepper, and more importantly Joe and Dan out of mix. I just dont like when a coach tried to play GM also. It takes away from their coaching time and preperation. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
This stat shows that maybe we do need a general manager:
Through 27 games this time, Gibbs is 11-16 -- that's the exact record Steve Spurrier had. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
I am waiting for the day when Snyder looks around and starts analyzing what the constants have been during his losing tenure. the answer he will come to is himslef & Vinny. And he can't fire himself...
If Vinny were scouting a race between a horse a cow and a pig...he would go with the cow... |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
Geez, things really do come full circle. I remember prior to the draft we were saying this same thing. I really just wish we would hire a figurehead "GM" so that we could all stop asking for one. Just recently Rogers is panning out, the Campbell pick is a question mark, but we don't know much other than that right now. Gibbs's picks have been more hits than misses, so I don't know what the outcry for a GM is for?

Its interesting that you say Gibbs' picks have been more hits than misses but cite 2 picks that are niether hits nor misses. The reason this team needs a GM is that both Gibbs and Snyder are too much in love with free agency, thats why all the draft picks have been given away. A GM would provide a good balance between the need to get free agents and the need to hold onto franchise changing draft picks. Its obvious the current way of doing things is not working so why not try something new. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
My question is this, are we losing right now because we don't have the talent to win?
I'd say that's not our main problem right now. Seems like execution and schemes are more of a problem... along with some key injuries. |

Lets go back and see, Taylor was an obvious pick, you and I could have made. Cooley has turned out to be good. This past draft was a questionable one. Rogers may be a good corner, however we were at need for a #2 receiver given our lack of size and presence of a physical receiver, which is now causing problems because we still dont have a #2 guy. Mike Williams was available and would have been and immediate player, probably. We could have taken a DB in the 2nd round or Campbell if they HAD to have him, he would have still been there. Nobody was taking him. Other than that, thats 3 out of 14 picks, plus any free agent pick ups from the draft that have not seen the field. I am not sure that qualifies as succesful or not. Drafting a QB in the 1st round is a sizeable gamble, not many 1st round QBs have panned out, with exception to Manning brothers, palmer, vick, although I still think is overrated to some extent. We trade away picks like they are poison! Bailey and a 2nd, a 3rd for brunell, a 1st for campbell, who is 3rd on the depth chart. If you take a 1st round QB, wouldn't you think he would be atleast 2nd on the depth chart. Especially since you spend all offseason working on a previous #1 QB pick in Ramsey, assurring him he is your guy, you are the starter. We needed obvious help on the d-line, but passes over two studs, which went to Dallas and will now kill us for the 5 to 10 years. Would you like any other moves of question. I know people are going to bring the free agent pickups into this. Griffin, Washington great pick ups. But 43 mil to 35 year QB, 10 mil up front for a 30 yr old corner. and not signing a true MLB, although that big signing from a year ago turned out to be a BIG waste of money in Mike Barrow. You let the leader of the LB core go to a division Rival, not very smart. I am sure there may be more moves, but I'll stop here. |

First of all, Taylor wasn't an obvious pick. Everyone and their Mother thought we were going to draft KWII. We ended up making the right pick. Barrow a big waste of money? No one knew that his knees were shot, and we did get him at a reasonable price. We didn't let the leader of our LB core go. We gave him an offer within our cap, and he ended up getting paid with the NYG and left. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
how either of you two who responded to my previous post think Taylor was not a no brainer are crazy. An athlete like taylor comes only so often. Barrow was over the hill MLB who was overpaid. A bargain compared to what we normally pay people, you right. but still overpaid to what he was going to be offered somewher else. We can agree to disagree. unfortunetly the moves have been questionable at best. Some were great picks, but most have not been that well thought out.

The same things were said about KWII. Everyone envisioned him as our H-Back, and honestly all the so called "experts" had KWII as a lock for us. Barrow was brought in because he was familiar with the system, and he was fairly cheap. I would have to disagree that most of our picks were not well though out. |

I don't think its crazy to state the truth. The fact of the matter is most experts thought we were taking Winslow for multiple reasons. One of those reasons being he would be a perfect fit as Gibb's "H Back". As it turned out our GM brain trust realized we could get Cooley in the 3rd round to fill that void.. That my friend is what having a good draft is all about. |

Re: What about a TRUE GM
Why are we talking about the front office structure?
Guys, one of our losses occurred because a side judge decided he'd throw up his arms, signaling that a two-point conversion was good despite the fact that he clearly couldn't see whether Alstott was in or not. Another loss occurred because the refs don't know how to interpret the tuck rule properly. When Plummer pulled the ball back down, the throwing motion ended when the ball hit his other hand. But the refs called it an incomplete pass instead of awarding a safety. We should be 7-4 right now. And besides, how close have we come on several other losses? Ask yourselves this: 1) Is the team improving under Gibbs? I'd say yes. We're much better than last year. 2) What personnel moves are CAUSING us to lose games? We're improving, and we're better than our record shows. Want a good stat? Here is the record of our opponents this year: Against the Skins: 6-5 Against Everyone Else: 65-45 It's a tough ass schedule we're playing. We're getting better. Don't mess with progress. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
They are getting better...anyone who can't see they are getting better is not watching the games and looking at only the record.
As for the GM/scouting department...I think you need to judge a team on how well they do in the later rounds of a draft. Anyone can make a top 10 pick and be right more times than not. You can read Mel Kipers book and pretty much predict the top 10 of a draft with 80% certainty. The fact of the matter is that since Danny & Vinny have been on board the Redskins have found very few gems in the later rounds where true talent evaluaters flex their muscles...perhaps that is why those picks are so undervalued by the team now and handed out like candy. If the skins were finding a Tom Brady or Joe Jacoby or Russ Grimm with those picks every couple of years then the team would start to value them more. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
Damn, I wish I was here during this discussion...
Yeah, basically what you guys said. No one is perfect, but like I said, I would think that at least 75% of the moves made have panned out. |
Re: What about a TRUE GM
People talked a lot about Casserly being a genius. Tell me this then, why do the Texans suck so bad? You would think that after three seasons of Carr getting pummeled that some genius would have realized by now that the O-line need massive infusions of talent.

A team needs good coaching and good talent evaluators to become great. The Texans have a good talent evaluator but the coaching is bad. The skins have good coaching but the talent evaluators can be improved. A GM would improve that process. |

There is more to being a running back than just running...he might be an above average runner but he's a great blocker and a pretty good receiver....and its not like the blocking or the playcalling is that good anyway, so its hard to run well. Everyone keeps talking about the late round picks that gibbs has made. Some of the players are still on the team and might be good, they just haven't had a chance yet. Most late round picks take a few years to get good, they don't made immediate impacts. If they were going to make an immediate impact, they probably wouldn't be late round picks |

As for hiring a GM, it's not that simple how many teams in the NFL have GM's and go no where year in and year out? The key is to find a great GM and there hard to find, that's where Snyder can step up and show his capabilities as an owner by evaluating the next great GM. That's no easy task for anyone, although I will lend my services for a nominal fee. :pi_lightb |

Rumor has it texans will be canning Charlie Casserly who Texans fans are furious at for screwing up their franchise. I think they have a lot of talent that isn't quite refined yet. Anyhow, may be worth looking at. The second Holmgren in Seattle was stripped of his GM duties they started doing much better.
I'd like to see an offensive coordinator come in first, and a GM right behind him. Let Gibbs motivate the players and over-see everything. Player motivation is his forte. |

I dont see how it was even a question of who they were going to draft. They needed D help. especially where Taylor plays. Winslow, TE can be found anywhere. Safties with Taylors size, speed, and ability are one in 10 year thing. And dont say look at Roy Williams in Dallas. He has no where near the speed Taylor has ,and cannot cover guys like Taylor can. TE, look at Cooley, he has awesome hands and probably fits better than Winslow wood anyway. Cooley is probably more football knowlegable which Gibbs said the H-back has to know everyplay, every shift, basically know as much as the QB in the offense. Sorry, but I disagree w/ your opinion, but its all good. |

Moving up, giving a 2nd or a 3rd rounder, plus next years #1 for a guy that was going to be there in the 2nd round. And he is still #3 on the depth chart. Wouldn't you think if you drafter a QB in the 1st round he may be atleast #2 on the depth chart. So are we getting better, How can you say yes. We are definately regressing as the season goes on. We are averaging a point or so more than last year on offense. And our Defense is horrible compared to last year. What moves are costing us. Well, drafting a corner and QB in first round when you could have gotten a good young, physical, WR for our #2 guy. Or drafted a good DE or DT that could help get some pressure on the QB. Then saved our #2 pick, drafted a corner then. Maybe intrusted the guy we had back at QB instead of sending our #2 pick, plus a #1 from next year to draft a QB who had one good year, and is still #3 on our depth chart. We still have a need for a "good" MLB. Marshall is pretty good, but he is a OLB playing middle. any more questions. Oh, and stop bringing the refs into our losing. We turned the ball over multiple times in denver, allowed Bell to run all over top of us and to allow a 1st year QB making his 3rd start sit back and pick us apart and put 35 points up, thats why we lost that game, Not the refs!! |
