What do we need personnel wise to be great?

OK, Ive accepted the fact that once again we are not going to the playoffs, but we are better than we were a year ago. The question then is, where do we go from here? This is just my opinion/wish list. I know most of this ain't gonna happen, but if I could magically control the shots here's what Id like to see:

1. Get a proven GM. We have debated the free agency moves and draft picks of the Snyder/Cerrato era ad nauseum, Im not going to get into that again. No one can deny that our mid round picks over the last 7-10 years have been terrible. A proven GM can find picks in the mid rounds that contribute to the team. We lock those picks in at bargain basement prices for 4-5 years, avoid salary cap hell, and use free agent money to add 1-2 free agents.

2. Get whatever we can for Patrick Ramsey. At this point, I really don't think we are going to get more than a 3rd rounder for him. We need draft picks, we need to build this team more through the draft and an additional 3rd rounder would certainly help.

3. Focus on the D-line in both the draft and free agency. We need a wide body in the middle and a pass rushing DE. The Bears D is good this year because their front 4 cause tremendous pressure. We on the other hand have to blitz our DBs and LBs to get any pressure whatsoever. I hope we use our 2nd rounder on a D-lineman, and go after a solid player in free agency, probably not a bad ass, but solid.

4. Use at least one mid round pick on O-line. One are in which we have been lucky is the health of our O-line, which is lucky because we sorely lack quality backup talent. If either one of our tackles goes down, we're in trouble. If our center goes down we're in trouble. We need better depth here.

5. Finally, we need a legitimate No. 2 wideout. I don't think we have a legit No. 2 on our team. I don't think we try to draft this, because history indicates that wideouts take at least 2 years to get going, usually 3. A No. 2 free agent WR should be readily available in free agency.

OK, that's my wishlist for next season. I know many of you will disagree, which is fine, that's why we post, let's just keep it civil.

1. We need depth on both the O and D lines.

2. A true pass rushing DE

3. A decent nickel CB

4. Some more depth at the Safety position

5. A good #2 receiver, and maybe a #3 (slot)

6. A solid, young blocking TE who can catch passes occasionally.

Thats my list....

I like your No. 6. Last year in the draft, I was screaming at the tv for the Skins to use No. 25 on Heath Miller. Can you imagine having Cooley in at H-back and Miller at TE, defenses wouldn't have any idea if we were running or throwing.

I agree with most of the list, but I think Walt Harris is a decent nickel back. He has been exposed as a starter this season, but in general (I said in general, not all the time) has been pretty solid. I think with his experience he can play the nickel very well. But I do agree with getting some corner depth, because Ade Jimoh scares me whenever he is in. As my friend said, "Pay me! I can also go in there, look confused and do nothing!"

Also, has anyone considered the possibility of cutting Patten? I personally am undecided, but if we need to clear a little space he has a pretty cut-friendly contract. Most of his bonuses are in the form of option bonuses, which start in 2006 with a 900k bonus...the signing bonus was only in the 2.5 range.

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

Since we dont have a #1 pick in next years draft, we need to focus on scouting a good DE or DT through the draft. Rumor has the jets trading Abraham for Ramsey, which would work out well.
I do think we need some help at depth with the interior of the O-line. Gaurd in particular. We drafted a couple of tackles last year in the later rounds, and I think one of them is still on the team.
I think we need some help in the secondary with respect to cover corners and cover safeties. Clark and Bowen are both pretty decent at supporting the run, however are not quality cover guys. Taylor is awesome at cover , but over the next couple of years will definately help with run support due to his ability to cause fumbles and rush the passer on blitzes.
one thing I have not heard much about is a quality MLB. Marshall is ok, but we need that imposing MLB that force teams to run outside. Marshall was better than OK filling in for LaVar last year, at OLB.
and last but not least, a FREAKIN PUNTER. Hopefully Tupa will be healthy, this frost dude is horrible.
and find somebody that can return kicks and punts. We give up too much field position with guys that can't get past the 25, and with Trash calling for a fair catch everytime instead of trying to make something happen. I have seen him quite a few times call fair catch with atleast 10 yards of room between him and closest defender.

to me MLB is one of those positions that you don't overpay for (see Jeremiah Trotter). i think marshall is one of those guys that fits well with our defense. maybe not as good as pierce but i wouldn't pay pierce/trotter money when we have other, more gaping, holes

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

Priority 1 - Caponomics

1) Renegotiate the following roster & workout bonuses due in 2006:
Sean Taylor - $2.2 million
Clinton Portis - $3.0 million
Casey Rabach - $2.1 million
Shawn Springs - $3.1 million
Cornelius Griffin - $2.5 million
Marcus Washington - $2.5 million
Lavar Arrington - $6.4 million
Chris Samuels - $4.5 million

In total, those bonuses stand to count $26.5 million against our cap. By renegotiating them into signing bonuses, we can reduce that figure to approximately $10 million in FY 2006, freeing approximately $15 million in salary cap space.

2) Trade Patrick Ramsey. Get whatever we can, even if it's just a 4th rounder, because moving him will free $2 million in cap space.

3) Release Brandon Noble. This will free up $1.7 million in cap space. I like the guy, but since he's coming back from injury he's a question mark. And I like $1.7 million in cap space more than I like a likeable question mark.

4) Release Matt Bowen. This will save $2 million in cap space.

5) Release Lennie Friedman. This will save $1 million in cap space.

6) Do the smart thing, lock up Cooley to a long-term deal now, before he becomes a very very expensive player 3 years from now. Might want to think about the same thing for Taylor, assuming his legal situation clears up.

7) Consider releasing John Hall, but only if we can find a better alternative, or an equally good one for less money. Releasing him would save $1.2 million in cap space.

Between these salary restructures and cuts, and assuming the cap is set at about $92 million next year, we should have enough salary cap space to acquire a stud DE, acquire a viable 2nd WR, hopefully acquire a good blocking TE, and otherwise bolster the team's depth.

Well, I think we'll be able to address a number of things through free agency. See my post above, if the team is able to play its cards right, the cap space should be there.

jermus22 11-30-2005 12:32 PM

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

1. A good DE who is modest in run support and a beast as a pass rusher. It would take a lot of pressure off Arrington, Griffin, and company to put heat on the qb (like Dexter Manley).

2. A legitimate #2 WR, someone who excels on short and intermediate routes, but can occasionally haul in the long one (an Art Monk type).

3. Another one or two more OL in the middle rounds, to provide depth and possibly challenge for a starting job.

This organization will never develop the consistency or depth of talent it needs through free agency. Free agency works good for plugging a hole or 2 but its no way (no matter how much cap space is available) to build a consistent winner.

This team needs to stop giving away draft picks.

Agreed, though that mantra doesn't help us much for this year since we already gave away our first and third for Campbell. We have to work with the hand we're dealt right now, until we have a full complement of picks again. Hopefully one day Campbell justifies that trade, but until then, we have to plug some holes in free agency.

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

What the skins really need is at least one tall wide receiver. Not that Moss and co can't play, but we need at least one fast, tall guy to help out the QB in tough situations. We could also use both another impact DL and OL player.

And yeah, Ramsey should be traded as it simply hasn't worked out for him here. He has skill, but for whatever reason the coaching he's received isn't improving his game and may even be hurting it. Wish him GL and move him on.
5) Release Lennie Friedman. This will save $1 million in cap space.
you got your wish a bit early...he was released to make room for the re-signing of Antonio Brown.

Noble will most likely retire...and hopefully the Skins keep him on as an assistant coach, as he's filling a role like that this season while injured.

At this point, as others have said, it's best to ship Ramsey out for whatever we can get.

Depth on both lines is crucial. No 1st round pick most likely means no impact guys out of next year's draft...unless the Skins can find their own Ivy League miracle...

Quite honestly, the biggest thing for the Skins would be solid impact by Jason Campbell. Brunell is showing his age, and even though he's having a great year, he's not suited to take the Skins to the playoffs. Getting rid of Ramsey, we don't draft QB in the later rounds, and see who else is out there to sign as a 3rd stringer. QBs go undrafted all the time...

But thats the problem, the skins will never get a full compliment of picks because the coach and owner love to give them away like Xmas gifts. So they are constantly stuck plugging holes instead of building a strong foundation that will result in continued success. It this "plug the holes" philosophy that has created a franchise that has not sniffed the playoffs in 5 years. The skins were not dealt their hand, they created it all by themselves and now they are having to live with the consequences.

Yeah you're right. I'm with you on this. But I think you're arguing in favor of a general philosophy instead of what should be done this year. We do need to stop trading away picks, but that doesn't help us for 2006. We don't have picks for 2006, so if we're going to stick to the topic of the thread, we've got to get free agents to fill personnel needs this year. And we have to avoid trading our 2007 draft picks in the process.

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

The problem the owner has is that he views the Skins as a fan, as such we are always "just a couple of players away" from contending. The reality is that you can't go out and add a bunch of players each year and expect them to gel in one season. However we add players, free agency or the draft, we need to keep them here and stop developing talent for other teams.

1. Make the d-line a position of emphasis in the draft. When's the last time we drafted a defensive lineman? Mario Mounds in 2001? Unacceptable, especially considering how generic our d-line is and that we've needed a pass rushing end for what 10, 12 years? The last defensive end we drafted, Kenard Lang in 1997! Anyone wondering why our d-line can't get any pressure can just look at our past drafts for the reason. Draft a couple of young kids and develop them.

2. Get either a bigger wideout (like McCants) or a pass catching tight end (unlike Royal). I love Cooley, but he's an h-back and as I've watched the offense if we had another tight end with hands we would have won a couple of the games we threw away. Sellers has 6 tds, 5 receiving, so the touches are there.

3. Trade Ramsey for Abraham. It's hard for me to type and walk as I have all my fingers and toes crossed that this deal goes through. A rare win-win, a straight up deal with these two guys gets the Jets the strong-armed qb that their offense desparately needs and gets us the pass rusher who can make our defense go from good to gawd-damn good.

4. Hang out a sign that says, "Now accepting applications for short yardage and goal line runners." I love Rock, but at 5'7" he can't get the tough yards. Hopefully we can give the 250 lb rookie Nemo a look soon, but running Portis and the not much bigger Cartwright into the line on 3rd and short and expecting them to break tackles, well let's just say that leads to a 5-6 record. Time for a switch.

Re: What do we need personnell wise to be great

You know, i figure ill prolly get some reactionary comments for this...but here goes...

I have seen a number of people suggest that we ought to get rid of Ramsey at the end of the season and get whatever we can for him...whether that be a 2nd (unlikely), a 3rd, or a 4th.

Now i just dont agree. I mean if nothing else having a quality back-up is something on which you simply cannot place enough emphasis.

Look at what happend to the Jets this year. They were a playoff team last year...and they didnt really lose too many guys, and even picked up Ty Law. But their QB goes down and look at them now...they may be one of the top candidates to win the Reggie Bush sweepstakes.

Now whether you liked the pick or not...i suppose it is true that we drafted Jason Cambell as our QB of the future. However, none of us know how far along he is in his development. In fact many analysts on draft day...and many guys on this board were saying that he was a project...that he was brought in here to ride the pine and learn for 2 years...and then take over eventually.

So i mean considering we are looking to make a serious run at the playoffs and possibly looking to become a contender next year...I think it would be silly to stake the entire season on Mark Brunells shoulders. Mark Brunell will be 36 and if Cambell is not ready, then the skins really ought to think long and hard before giving up a damn good back-up QB in Ramsey (in my humble opinion starting material) for a measly 4th rounder. They need to at least make sure they get something worthwhile for him...or shouldn't trade him.

Now here is the part i know ill get shit for...

It is my opinion that despite the fact that he has proven to be a good leader and an admirable competitor...and a seemingly good guy...that the Mark Brunell signing has not been a good thing for the redskins. Here is why i think that...

One should not only consider a players performance in deciding whether or not he was a good signing. You also have to consider the cost to benefit ratio. The first example that comes to mind is that of Randy Moss and the Oakland Raiders...

I read an article recently that questionned whether or not Moss was actually helping the raiders or not. The guy is putting up good numbers...but look at his paycheck. While he was out injured...the raiders focused more on their running attack and actually played good winning football while moss was out or not playing a large role in the offense. When he is in the game...his contract necessitates that a certain amount of the offensive plays are based on him...and thus the raiders run less. So while just looking at the guys stats you might say he was a great signing...just consider the huge commitment the raiders have made in taking on his 75 million contract...and the fact that they are still only 4-7. If they hadnt signed him...they could still have a good offense...and could have invested the money his contract eats up...elsewhere.

Now how is this related to Brunell? Well while it seems unfair to criticize Gibbs an Co. for the initial signing now...since hindsight is always 20/20 and they didnt have the luxury of knowing how things would turn out when they signed Brunell. I do believe that it is legitimate to judge a signing based on the results you get vs what you gave up to get those results.

Brunell is getting paid alot. (more than our other 2 QB's i believe). His first season here was a disaster, and now despite vastly improved play on his part...the team still may not make the playoffs.

In addition to the dollar cost of his contract, his signing also led us to waste any viable cotribution that Ramsey MIGHT have been able to make to this team.

Of course no one can tell what would have been if it had been ramsey starting in place of Brunell. However, Ramsey was a first rounder, a big investment for this franchise, and considering that he never was given an opportunity comparable to the oppurtunities that other first rounders normally get...we may never find out whether Ramsey would have turned out to be another Drew Brees...or another bum.

He might have been great. He might have been terrible. Or he might have been mediocre.

But it is the not knowing that constitues a wasted investment...and should in my mind be considered as part of the cost we undertook in signing Brunell.

You can take it even further and suggest that the cost of Brunells contract could have been even more than just 1 wasted first rounder. For IF...and i do say IF Ramsey did prove to be a Viable starter...then we would of course never have drafted Jason Cambell. And so it could even be possible...though noone will ever know...that in addition to the actual dollar investement...Brunell's signing also cost us 2 first rounders (QB investments - Ramsey drafted before his arrival...who we wont know about. Campbell drafted after his first season...precisely because we didnt know about Ramsey, or Brunell- both of whom only played a portion of the season and neither played exceptionally well.)

So in conclusion i would just like to state...that in my opinion the cost to benefit ratio of signing Brunell has not even come close to panning out. You know i mean maybe im wrong...and he will come back and lead us to the playoffs or a superbowl and that would be great. But frankly...at this point...i would really have rathered seen what we had in Ramsey...before going out and getting a guy who when it is all said and done...may have only led us to 2 mediocre seasons...but cost us so very very much.

Sorry about the length...i just got kinda carried away...

We currently only have 17 players on our team/practice squad that were drafted in the last 7 years. Jon Jansen is the oldest draft pick on our team.

This year we have a 2, 3, 5, 6, 6, and 7. The 1 & 4 were traded for Jason Campbell and the extra 6 for Rod Gardner.

So when the front office gives you lemons, you look for free agents with vodka.

Traded for a guy who had 1 good year, and benched in previous years. and is 3rd on the depth chart now. wouldnt you think if they are getting Rid of Ramsey that Campbell may have moved up by now. he has been here long enough to know what the hell is going on. So Gibbs didn't come out and say, hey we made a mistake, he's simply saying Trotter is playing well for the Eagles.

Kinda putting words in his mouth if you ask me.

Besides, wasn't this ultimately Williams' decision?

He cut Trotter before even seeing him on the field, that says how much he thought of his ability to run the defense.

I would say you are all right in what you said!!! But with no first rounder this will be hard to do!!

Here is my outlandish hope for the skins.

1. We somehow are blessed...and get the Tight end from maryland...VERNON DAVIS in the draft. I have wanted him to become a redskin since he was in the beginning of his sophmore campaign at UMD.

2. We lock chris cooley up long term...so he never leaves...

3. We get some D-line help. I dont neccessarily mean an elite pass rushing DE. I would actually rather get 2 D-lineman in free agency/the draft for moderately sized contracts. One pass rushing D-end who is relatively young...and has not yet hit his prime (ie. has shown improvement in each of the years he's been in the NFL). And a good defensive tackle prospect/free agent.

4.. We get some O-line depth...maybe in the draft.

In my opinion our Wide Receiving core is fine...because if we ever got another good tight end a la Vernon Davis to go along with Cooley. Defenses would have sooo many problems covering our offense that Jacobs and Patten would have field days running around out there.

Just out of curiosity...i havnt really followed college football this season...being in france and all...so can someone tell me where Vernon Davis ranks in this years Tight End class...so that i can find out just how unrealistic my hopes of getting him actually are? (He is a junior this year by the way...so it is not a sure thing that he will declare for the draft)

Anthony Fasano TE out of Notre Dame.Anybody know anything about him?
He is one of the three finalists along with Vernon Davis out of UMD and Marcedes Lewis out of UCLA for the 2005 John Mackey Award given to the nations top collegiate tight end.

Maybe we could get him with our 2nd rounder if my boy Vernon Davis is already gone...? Would he be worth that high of a pick...anyone familiar with Notre Dame football?
Gibbs said they made a mistake by letting Trotter go??

I'd really love to see that quote.
I actually recall Gibbs saying something to that effect as well. I don't know if Gibbs meant to say it was a mistake to release Trotter so he could go to the Eagles, if he really thought Trotter would be valuable to our team, or what. I don't regret the move, but I do remember Gibbs saying he did.
