Predicting 2006 Compensatory picks
 

I'm hoping we get a third and a fourth for Smoot and Pierce, but a 4th and 5th seems more realistic. Rabach pulls down the value of the two big losses a bit and Patten shouldn't factor in very much as he was a complete non-factor.

For those unfamiliar with the formula it has 3 determining variables. The amount of contract, the # of games played and postseason honors; with the contract size being the number one determining factor. Let's say you lose two 6 million dollar players and gain none in free agency. Then you get two thirds. Or if you lose two 6 million dollar players, but pick up two 2 million dollar players then you get less compensation. Maybe a fourth and a fifth like I am projecting. What do you guys and gals think we deserve? And just remember the formula is some kind of top secret super classified system so the whole thing is a little arbitrary to say the least.

Considering Smoot and Pierce were both hurt for part of the year, I wouldn't get our hopes up too high. I think I'd rather have one 3rd rounder than 1 4th and 1 5th, but it ain't up to me now is it!

A 4th and 5th would be nice. Though we might even be lucky to get that. It's hard to know, but I doubt we'll get a 3rd.

i rather a single third too... that means DE, DT, WR the first day where we could actually get good talent. or maybe a high potential OL guy or CB.

If I understand the system correctly we will get nothing for Pierce since he was originally undrafted coming out of college.

Yes you are right. I still think this is not right. So you find a great player[non drafted] and he grows up with your team only to have him sign somewhere else few years later. You draft a player no better and the samething happen but you get a pick. Dose it hurt any less to have either player leave? That needs to be changed!!!

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

Well they announced the compensatory picks for 2005 on March 21, 2005. So, I'd assume they hand out the picks later this month.

I would assume that we would get two 4th rounders for Smoot and Pierce (assuming we get compensated for UFA Pierce). I'd be happy with that.

It's been so long since we could even consider picking up picks that I'll believe it when I see it. But given how the pundits were all saying we wouldn't recover from the losses of Smoot and Pierce, we ought to get something!

Not that we should have anything to complain about but I just read this at a site where this guy who predicts the compensatory picks every year (he is usually very accurate) and anyhow he predicts that we will only be getting one extra pick at the end of the seventh round. That sucks and is much less than I was thinking we would get. (#1) as someone already mentioned we don't get anything for Pierce because he came into the league as a free agent. (#2) No matter that Smoot signed a big contact and Patten and Rabach signed small ones they pretty much cancel each other out under this system. A seventh round pick is about as useful as those tickets you win after playing Skeeball for eight hours. Anyways I was way off on what I thought we would get. Oh well.

The skins won't get any. They never do. Philly will get a half dozen.

Or... you could just put up the money necessary to entice that player stay with you.
