Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
Things just don't add up. The public relations word is that he was too outspoken. However, I know there have been outspoken coaches under Gibbs before. I think there is more to this story....
1. Could Lindsey be involved in the article bashing G. Williams? 2. Could Lindsey's loyalty to Holdman and keeping Rocky on the bench be another issue? 3. Could it be that he was a divisive figure in the locker room? Did he lose the position players? The reason I ask, is that first Lavar, now I don't see ANY public defense of Lindsey by either Marshall or Washington, or Holdman. 4. All of the above?? Just my 2 cents.... |
Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
I think all it meant was his drill sargeant style and his ill advised public comments at times rubbed Gibbs the wrong way. Personally I wouldn't try to dig too deep here, the reasons for his firing seem pretty obvious.

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
He was a drill sgt type and with the current "keep the players happy & comfortable" attitude the Redskins have adopted that was not going to fly. I also think somebody had to be a scapegoat for this season's terrible defense and he was the most painless choice.

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
I think you can still have a tough coaching style without being a complete a-hole, which Lindsey seems to be. GW isn't exactly the easiest going guy around.
I think more than anything his comments about LaVar early in the season really did him in. |
Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
In my estimation, there are several reasons why Lindsey was fired: (1)Lindsey and Gibbs are polar opposites and Lindsey probably rubbed Gibbs the wrong way; (2) perhaps more importantly, the linebackers did not produce last season; and (3) there is always the unknown - what took place in Redskins Park behind closed doors will likely never be revealed as Gibbs runs a tight-lipped ship.

Who knows. Teams change position coaches like they change underwear.

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
I think it's more surprising that safeties coach Steve Jackson was fired.

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
His comments about Lavar, though true, probably sealed his fate. Gibbs demands that coaches and players maintain a veneer of "class" when discussing opponents and dealing with the media generally. It didn't help that the linebackers played like shit all year either.

What kind of underwear does the team wear? ;) (I'm sorry, that was SO cheezy) |

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
He was disliked and didn't take ownership of things. Comments like 'I'm not gonna be responsible for players knowing the scheme(total paraphrase)' tend to piss people like Gibbs off when he takes ownership for everything. Even stuff he shouldn't. Plus the guy was just a dickhead who no one really liked. Why keep him around?

Re: Lindsey's firing....what does it mean
I'm inclined to agree with irish, someone had to be the fall guy for such a dismal season from the defensive side of the ball. It's not like they didn't know about Lindsey's gruff, and outspoken personality when they hired him, and the issue only came to the forefront with the incident involving LaVar. The previous two seasons when the defende played well, there didn't seem to be a problem, but after last season's debacle someone had to fall, and he seemed to be the most likely choice.
