UMD Terps Upset Number 1 UNC
 

maybe not worth its own thread but its the off-season and this is the biggest upset in Mens Basketball all year. This is a definite high point in this horrible season for the terps. The unranked terps beat Number 1 UNC at UNC. That makes Gary Williams 4-3 in the last 7 games against number 1 teams and the 7th total win over number 1 teams.

It was a fantastic game and it was a very well fought. Maryland was an 18 point underdog. It was a fantastic upset. i feel like such a f....ing idiot for not making the trip for this game. I was so close in doing so. Best upset in college basketball this year!!! I don't know how many people care but whatever!! LETS GOOOOOOOOOO MARYLAND!!!#@!#@!#heruiqwdfkasdfklf;jf\\\

Maryland has 8 days off till we play Duke at home. That is also the returning weekend for students at maryland. Everyone is going to get drunk and go to that game.

ther are constantly upsets in college sports. it really means nothing, especially in basketball. unc will prolly be a #1 seed when the tournament gets here and md will prolly be lucky to get an invite to the nit.

You don't start classes again until January 28th? WTF, do you have like 2 months of classes at UMD?

Congrats on the win, though. I always like to see an ACC team screw over one of their own.

I saw it at the gym today and I have to admit I was a little proud. About 14 people had gathered around the TV to watch the closing minute of the game when I realized that, hey this is great, the entire nation is witnessing my boys taking down the number 1 team in the nation.

Agreed that it'll mean very little in the end. College basketball doesn't change much over one game. However UNC won't be a number 1 seed in my opinion. They aren't that good. They have in conference games now and they have had very close ACC games. They beat GT by only 1 3 days ago and went to overtime against clemson earlier this month. However both of those games were on the road. Which makes this win even more impressive because UNC has been lights out at home. An unranked team has only beat the number 1 team 28 times. Moreover before today, the number 1 team has lost to a visiting opponent only 6 times. So the win isn't just another college upset. And Maryland is turning things around winning 6 of their last 7 and losing by only one in their loss. I'm not saying that they are even in the discussion for the ncaa tourney but they are turning things around. They would need to get to go 7-5 or 8-4 to have a shot at the Tourney. Maryland would have to get really lucky being that this is the ACC. But we'll never give up.

This was the 7th time an unranked team beat a ranked team on the road. The last time it was done was also by UMD and [I BELIEVE] it was also against UNC. So here is a big F U to UNC. And for old times sake lets look back at last year's terps beating Number 5 UNC.

Also to keep spirits up. Lets hope Maryland can pull out another miracle against a top 5 team when we play Duke. Duke is 4-2 at maryland over the past 6 years and 2 OF THE TERP WINS WERE WHEN DUKE WAS NUMBER 1. F... Duke. They don't have to be our rivals; i'd rather they be our bitch anyways. Now I am not saying the terps even have a shot but all i am saying is I'll be there with the rest of terps nation and we will be screaming our hearts out hoping for another win like the 2 last year.

Yeah Maryland returns from winter break the latest of all the colleges I know of. The only college kids left in town are from Maryland. We go back to school the latest but also end one of the latest to finish both in december and may. It sucks because when we are taking our finals, everyone who just got back from college wants to come party and all we want to do is study.

But the last couple weeks have been boring as hell. i've spent a couple nights at Georgetown with some friends but i am bored to death. More reason we are going to unload all of our boredom frustration at the Duke game.

you covered alot of ground with that post but it doesn't change the fact that , while it's a good victory for md fans, it really is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. for a acc team to upset another acc team is nothing new, happens every year.
i may be coming across as a unc fan but, while i do like them, i'm a bigger md fan. my loyalty goes as follows
1- uva fan (i live in va.)
2-umd (i was born in md and still have much family there)
3- unc (ever since jordan i've liked them)

Yeah, i agree. This loss will mean very little to the tarheels and obviously the terps aren't going to get votes because of one game. The only thing is the terps are turning things around lately. I just hope they can continue to play at a higher level than they had been earlier this year. We will see. Too early to tell now. Duke is playing VT 3 days before they play the terps and both games are on the road. The terps have 8 days off. I am hoping for a miracle.
