Post your cold remedies

So of course there's no cure or quick fix to the common cold.

But right now, I have the worse head cold and being that I go to school full time and work part time, I don't really have any downtime. That being said, I've caught a cold, its not terrible but its enough to make me wanna say eff it, and just not go to class or work. And for someone who hasn't missed a day of work in almost 2 years, its out of my character to feel this way.

So I figured, there are a lot of people here who come from different walks of life... Why not post what you do when you catch a cold/flu? If people post some good stuff, I'll try it out and also I figured it's helpful for anyone else who might be/get sick in the future.

:)

I'm old school (tea with honey and lemon...chased with a shot of rum)

I miss canthetuna, that was a great name (plus your explanation for how you got it was priceless)...I like the new name though

Hot showers and humidifiers. When I get a cold I take 4 or 5 hot showers throughout the day and sleep with the humidifier next to me. I drink a ton of hot chocolate and eat saltine crackers. I rarely take any medicine unless my congestion is really bad, then I take some generic sudafed stuff.

That's the one. Personally, I prefer a shot of Jameson, but I'm sure 151 would work fine for killing whatever is living in your throat. Also, thera flu is the most disgusting thing in the world but it does a pretty good job of lessening your symptoms.

A shot of so-co and lime will clear me up pretty quick...it only lasts about 10 mintues before I feel like hell again, but after 3-4, I feel pretty good.

thanks, I debated changing it since parcell's retirement, and since ST passed, I thought I'd pay tribute. Been thinking about it for a while now and thought it may be time...

It is really weird, though to change it.

if i get the flu I sit in bed and sedate myself until I feel better upon awakening (or at least try to) If I get a head cold or something I try to take cold eze early on and maybe some tylenol sinus occasionally.

I believe in being very proactive with things like this. The second I feel strange, I start cranking the airborne and halls vitamin C drops (they have 100% daily vit C and taste great!). If it gets much worse from that, I try to take extra time to sleep and get charged up. I figure spending time immediately will save me twice the time if I get full blown sick.

If it's already hit -- drink lots of fluids. Teas and water seem to be the best, flush it out of your system -- and Nyquil / booze to make sure you sleep well.

My renedy is odd I guess. Whenever I feel one coming I go into uber exercise mode. The exercise helps keep my blood flowing and keep congestion down. I have no idea why it works for me but it really does seem to work.

I hear ya with the exercise thing. I'm a total gym rat as it is (6 days a week religiously), but sometimes you just get to sick to go. I felt a cold coming on a few weeks ago and worked out for two days despite knowing I was getting sick. Turns out I got the flu and was in bed for literally 4 days straight. Ugh.

As far as cold remedies- Zicam rapid melts are very good for easing symptoms and shortening the length of your cold. It's homepathic- no drugs- but really works well. Also, I swear by Airborne (those effervescent tablets). They have tons of antioxidants and really boost your immune system. I basically do a cocktail of multivitamins, zicam, airborne, and echinacea. I really don't like taking medicine during the day b/c I HATE the feeling of "medicine head."

Also, you gotta take NyQuil (liquid, not gel tabs) at night. Sleep is one of the body's best ways of recovery and recuperation. NyQuil clears up cough and congestion and knocks you out. Love the stuff.

First, this is a great idea to post! Especially since I seem to get about 10 colds a year, at least when I lived in Nashville. My remedy recently has been pretty much just like GMScud's....Zicam as soon as I feel funny (I like the nasal swabs), Nyquil liquid at night (if it looks like it's getting bad), and drink liquids all day....water, gatorade, tea, and maybe a couple of red bull and vodka's ;)

Re: Post your cold remedies

Alcohol definitely makes you sleep better (or at least fall asleep faster), but as far as the immune system is concerned- stay away while you're sick. Not to mention if you're taking other medicines, since mixing them with alcohol is so so so bad for your liver and kidneys.

Look, I'll be the first one at the bar to tip a few when I'm feeling well, but if it's night time and you're sick and feel like shit, just take a dose and a half of nyquil and you'll be out like a light. No need to drink. That is, unless you don't have nyquil in the house but you do have booze. If that's the case, take 2-3 shots and call it a night!
