PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
VERMONT -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman."PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health. "The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."In a statement Ben and Jerry's said, "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child." Read PETA's letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield September 23, 2008 Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield, On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's. Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits. Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death. Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup. And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around. The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Tracy Reiman Executive Vice President PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk - News Story - WNBC | New York |

Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
I heard this on the radio yesterday and the first thing I thought was "how dumb can you get?"
People wouldn't think of PETA as a bunch of wackos if they didn't come up with shit like this. |
Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
I'm all for it if I can freshly squeeze the milk myself.

Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
I'd like to see what the sales number look like at that restrant in a few months after they start serving breast milk icecream. They will eother go through the roof or they will go out of business and I'm thinking it will not last very long.

Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
I think you just have to draw a line to bar Homo Sapiens bodily secretions from your food
-It's just so............"Donner party"........ Unless of course, it's like Angelina Jolie......that's cool |
Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
Funny how we all think it is gross but if you never had cow's milk and it was not a common thing to drink it and someone asked you to drink milk from a human or a cow I bet most people would pick human.
I saw about six months ago an excellant doc on PETA on HBO. MAn they do some good stuff for animals but they just go so extreme at times it turns people off. Also, if you catch 30 Days on FX about a hunter that went to live with a PETA family you will be touched. There are people out there doing some nasty stuff to animals that need to be stopped. |
Re: PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
lol PETA is so ridiculous, it's a shame because it really tarnishes the good things they do.

I was going to say the same thing. Animal cruelty is a serious matter. Unfortunately, PETA doesn't know how to pick its battles, goes over the top, and ends up hurting their cause. |

Why? Positive or negative feedback? It is well documented that PETA has advocated killing animals rather than them "suffering" in shelters or captivity. The founder Ingrid Newkirk admits to euthanizing hundreds of animals in a shelter she worked in rather than "watch them suffer and be abused". The incident Buster references did happen and it follows a disturbing pattern for PETA. From National Review Online: "in 2003, of the 2,224 dogs and cats PETA received for placement, only 312 (14 percent) ended up in homes. All but one of the remaining animals were killed. This has been a consistent pattern for years. The Center noted that between 1998 and 2003, PETA took in 13,021 animals. Of these, it killed 10,195, with 2,540 adopted and 261 transferred (their kill ratio has trended upwards since and is now over 90%). In contrast, animal shelters located near PETA’s headquarters had a far superior adoption-to-kill ratio in 2003. According to the statistics compiled by the Center, the Norfolk SPCA found adoptive homes for 73 percent and Virginia Beach adopted out 66 percent, compared to PETA's meager 14 percent." Wesley J. Smith on PETA on National Review Online Before you dismiss the article as being "right wing" propaganda, these numbers have been officially documented with the Commonwealth of Virginia. The people working at the SPCA shelters work their asses off on a shoe-string budget to keep as many of the animals alive as they can. It's too bad the PETA folks don't do the same. I guess it's easier for PETA to give these animals a shot than take care of them and try to find them homes. While PETA does some good, they are a radical organization that also supports the ALF and other "Animal rights" groups that engage in illegal activities. I would much rather support organizations like the ASPCA and Humane Society. |
