Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

Is anyone else bothered that we are almost half way into this season and our QB, Donovan still doesnt have a new contract??? I may be paranoid, but it makes me think that maybe Shanahan doesnt have faith in him to be his long-term QB.

We know with his injuries and advancing age, that McNabb maybe only had about 2 or 3 years left when he was traded here. Do you think that is a factor on why he hasnt been re-signed? Maybe they are worried about giving him big money when he could only have 1 year left or they dont want to sign him to a longer term deal because he is an injury concern..

I searched and hadn't seen any new threads on this in a while, and just wanted to weigh in now that the season is about halfway....

Not bothered at all.

Well, be honest, if McNabb is just being graded on his play in Washington through 6 weeks, has he done anything to earn a contract extension.

He last played well in Week 2. 5 TDs, 5 INTs (one, yeah, on a hail mary). He's completing 58% of his passes. He'll be 34 in November.

If it was your money, and not Dan Snyder's, are you paying that performance for the age 35-38 seasons? I don't think I would be able to.

10 more games though to turn it around.

Rumor is Shanahan wanted to give him 8-10 games to make sure he's his guy. Given how we've always been too quick to dish out monster deals in the past, I find this new approach refreshing actually. If McNabb isn't worrying why should we?

Because of CBA uncertainties, lots of guys are lacking contracts for next year. Plus we need to test drive McNabb before we purchase. I'm not concerned in the slightest.

No I am not, and yes DM has done enough to warrant a new big deal from Washington.

Name me one other reason other than #5 we have been in all of these tight games and why we have hope of winning them in the 4th quarter.

Last night down by 10 to the /colts with 8:14 to go in the 4th I knew we still had a chance to win.

I have not actually believed we coul make that kind of comeback with any other QB we have had here in the last 10 years or hell even since gibbs 1.0.

#5 has brought respect back to DC

That is a good approach, i agree. There is really nothing else Shanahan could have done. I suppose he was smart to not ink him to a big deal, like we've done in the past.

This makes me think of when Joe Gibbs traded for Mark Brunell in 2004, and then signed him to a 7 year contract. Given Brunell's age at the time (34, IIRC), why in the world did he sign him for that long of a deal at that money??

It was for cap purposes only, just to spread out the cap hit.

If McNabb cannot play any better then what I have seen from him this year I hope we dn't sign him to any new deal. The good news is his stock is dropping with each game so maybe by the end of the year we can sign him to a smaller contract not risking any big money on him.

I don't think anyone is worried about it. Finish the season strong and you get a big payday, get hurt and miss several games and you get measly pay day. The formula is real simple.

Unless his agent or his ego don't like that. He could always chose to go to a team like the 49ers who have a nice solid roster except for QB.

I am not concerned, I am grateful. I know that the fact we spent a 2 on him makes everyone want to sign DMac long term, but that value is already gone. I would say that to this point in time, he has not looked like a franchise QB. Now if they want to sign him to a 3 year deal while they groom his replacement, which personally I wouldn't think he'd agree to, then I would be behind that. Otherwise, if his play doesn't improve or gets worse, let him walk to AZ, MN or SF.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

The counter to those who are saying its a good approach would be why cough up a draft pick to Philly then?

However, I think the real thing here is McNabb and his agent want to get inked for a big long term deal. Our guys dont think he deserves that and he has shown nothing to prove that so far. His market value is going down, so we should be able to ink him for a 2-4 years towards the latter end of this season.

The truth is we need him because he is better any other option and we want him there as a solid QB while the next rookie we draft waits in the helm.

I'm not bothered but they need to sign him. They've invested draft picks so no way you let the guy walk after one year... unless they make a trade of their own to let's say San Fran and get back the picks. In McNabb's defense he needs better players around him.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

I think a deal will be worked out in the end but Bruce Allen works very methodically, worst comes to worst they franchise him.

As I understand it, the Shanahans would like to lock him up for at least a couple more years though they've been "surprised by how poor his footwork is" (whatever that means)
