Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
Hot lunches in the school cafeteria only.
Another fine socialist program. :Flush: Chicago School Bans Kids from Bringing Lunches from Home |

Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
I think there are bigger things to worry about... and I doubt this is really all that hard to bypass if you want to get around it.
They best way to figure out if new ideas are good or stupid is to test them. the good ones spread to nearby counties and the bad ideas get revoked and go away. I think school uniforms are stupid, but their effect on grades seems to be significant. |
Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
i want to try and guess the public policy reason . . .
1) some kids have good things to eat in their bag like rice krispie treats, sandwhiches, snack packs and capri suns while other less provided for kids have pbj, hard thick slices of govt cheese and have to drink out of the water foutain or 2) whatever political shot caller who proposed this law is getting paid under the table by whatever private company provides or makes the school cafeteria food ... edit - dang it. i should have known, "its for the better of the children" thingy. although i believe my option 2 is still in play as a scandal takes time to be discovered. that baltimore thing about an extra tax on soda is some BS, yeah baltimore put an extra tax on soda to help curb people buying soda and not b/c the city is in financial hell b/c of the lucrative insanely stupid deals they made with public servants unions re. pensions and all the people needing assistance . . . |

This "healthy eating" BS is just a cover for increasing the federal funding the school receives based on the potential increase of free & reduced lunch vouchers. But reporters Monica Eng and Joel Hood suggest there are other reasons than a nutrition crusade: "Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district's food provider, Chartwells-Thompson. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch." Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
sadly everything remotely related to politics is all about money.
that was a fun game though. read some headline then try and guess the warped "alleged" social policy behind it . . "No flags allowed to be displayed on flag day" "Fed ban on sale of tobacco to persons dying of terminal cancer" "schools exploiting 'no child left behind act' loopholes" "house republicans demand better healthcare . . .for fed employees" "Detriot is losing residents, raises housing tax to make up budget gap" "cheese manufacturers now not required to use any diary products . .whatsoever" "school district cancels music" |
Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
Should be no problem funding it? Just steal it from the SS fund and deny a few life saving procedures to Seniors (Toooo Old) with the New Health care plan.......

The question is crunchy or smooth? |
Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
The problem is not the food it the lack of exercise that we don't get. My grandmothers generation ate a ton of high fat salty foods but they got plenty of exercise doing everyday chores. I can remember getting up in the morning to eggs, bacon, biscuts, and grits. Lunch was a couple of hot dogs or a hamburger. Then dinner was fried chicken, mash potatoes, gravy, rolls, beans etc...and they ate like that every day.

Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
I think the ACLU successfully sued a school district over a similar policy a few years ago. Pretty sure it was in Indiana.

Link not working for me. With that said ...
Police State: (n) country repressively controlled by its government: a country in which the government uses police, especially secret police, to exercise strict or repressive control over the population define police state - Bing DICTIONARY While the erosion of personal freedoms is a concern and, certainly, individual liberties have been sacrificed for the "general welfare". We are far from a police state. We may eventually become one, but the mere fact that the "State" exercises police powers does not make us a "Police State". You want a police state? Try Nazi Germany. Try Iran - both under the Shah and the current theocracy. Hyperbole like this only polarizes the argument. We are flawed and we will continue to be so. There are other countries that are more "free" than us but none with as large and disparate a population as ours. Sorry, it just irks me when either the left or the right start comparing our country to "police states" or equates it with the Nazis. Just a peeve. I'll stop my rant now. |

While there are aspects of life in the USA which I find to be problematic in terms of government control, we are no where near a "police state" and it is unfair to say that we are. |
Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
I dont think its hyperbole. Its a very fitting term AFAIC.
Our childrens lunches are being policed. A government official is telling us what we may or may not feed our children. Thats overblown govt and its big govt and its utter bullshit. We do not need a govt appointed meal nanny. |
Re: Chicagoschool principal outlaws brown bag lunches.
I think they should just take fat kids away from their parents until they lose the weight.
