Re: Adam Gettis pick 5.6

Notes:
three years on the offensive line (center and tackle) and two years as a defensive lineman and led his team to the state title as junior. Also lettered in basketball and track. Redshirted in 2007 and saw action in four games as a reserve left guard in ’08. Appeared in four games in ’09, starting the season opener against Northern Iowa at left guard, then played a reserve role the rest of the season. Saw action in only seven contests in ’10. Missed the first two games after injuring his ankle in fall camp, returned to play in the next six games — including starts at right guard against Wisconsin and Michigan State — before suffering another ankle injury and missing four contests. Returned to play in the Insight Bowl against Missouri. Started all 13 games at right guard in ’11. Opted not to bench-press at the Combine because of a strained right pectoral muscle.

Positives:
Quick out of his stance. Athletic. Has good upper-body strength to absorb an initial charge and works to re-anchor. Can work his hips and seal running lanes. Good lateral agility to shuffle and mirror. Quick to the second level and coordinated to initiate contact. Log-rolls defenders. Competitive playing temperament — plays through the whistle and works to finish. Has upside. Exceptional Combine tester — produced rare 10-yard splits (1.69 seconds).

Negatives:
Needs to bulk up and get stronger, particularly in his base. Can do a better job sitting down in pass protection — tends to rise, get straight-legged and slip off blocks. Is not equipped to fire off flat-backed, roll his hips and reestablish the line of scrimmage in the run game. Limited starting experience. Lacks ideal size and durability could be an issue.

Summary:
An undersized, competitive, athletic one-year starter who played his way into draft consideration as a senior. Showed well against top competition and should continue improving with increased strength development. Would be best in a zone scheme.

Looks like a zone blocker with a lot of potential.
I bet he nails a backup spot at least.

One of the guys I really wanted. Great pick. Not totally sure why he wasn't pick before Josh LeRibasldkfads but either way they got him.

We actually have some real oline depth now assuming Hurt and Polombus can handle the tackle spots in a pinch.

Gotta give the FO cred on this point. I was surprised we didn't grab Massie as he fell, but all I can say/hope is this means the team knows J Brown is set for a nice career rebound.

Pretty stoked about this pickup. While RT remains a concern, we certainly have developed a stable of promising young OL prospects. And if Iowa can produce anything, it's an offensive lineman.

Well you have to remember out of Williams, Kory L, Monty, Chester, Brown, Smith, Hurt, Polombus, and our 3 rookies only 8 or 9 will make it.

Yep. I think we keep 9 lineman and Smith is gone...so Williams, Kory L, Monty, Chester, Brown Hurt Polombus, Gettis and Joshy.

Seriously how badly will the dude's name get butchered around here come the reg season? Gonna worse than Chaz Rhinehardt :)

Looks like the right guy for our zone blocking scheme , I believe he ran the fastest 40 / for lineman .

Gettis should be able to play this year at some point. I'd be really disappointed if he turned out to be like Selvish Capers.

Read Most of the draft books out there AG looks really good, just needs to gain some weight.

Yeah but capers was a 7th round Project. I think if he can bulk up he's got a better chance

Oh he will, our training staff will add 15 - 20 lbs right off the bat with this guy. In my eyes, this guy has a "more better" shot of making this team and developing into a top guard than Josh. Ive only watched a little bit of tape on this guy, but from what I saw, he was definitively more impressive than our first guard taken, good ol' Josh Leri "short" bus.

In this scheme 293 is an ideal weight. I say he stays where he is. Back in the early 2000's the Falcons and Broncos regularly ranked in the top 5 in total rushing yards including 2005 where they both finished 1st and 2nd respectively. Both teams were tied for dead last in average weight among starting offensive linemen at 295.
