Boswell always makes me feel better...
Tom Boswell at the post generally writes a pretty level-headed column. Here's his take on the draft so far. I hope he's right...

Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
After having time to process today, I have to say that I agree. We, as Skins fans, have gotten so used to "winning the offseason" that when the splashy signings aren't made by our team, we rebel. Here's how I see it:
1. Bailey left, no big deal. Smoot is gone, we have a big physical CB to replace him. 2. McNabb was booed by Philly fans who wanted Ricky Williams. Jason Cambell is big, has an arm, learned 4 offenses in 4 years and led his team to an undefeated season. Maybe as fans we become emotionally attached to players like Ramsey. What's wrong with a little competition? SHould the most important position on the field just be handed to someone without them proving themselves week in and week out? |

I heard gibbs has already given Campbell his playbook, it's in crayon! |
Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
He's so stupid...(HOW STUPID IS HE?)...He's so stupid that he lead a team to an undefeated season, had a 69.6% completion percentage, 20td to 7int ratio, 172.9 QB rating and 2700 yds his senior season. He's so stupid he's the second leading passer in Auburn history. He's so stupid he started as a freshman. STop believing everything you read in ESPN Insider. I don't care if he has the intelligence of a garden slug. All I care about is that he performs on the field. BTW, Cadillac is the guy who said he lost the WAR but was still in the BATTLE and no one is accusing him of being rejected from Mensa.

so you evaluate him on a winning college season, I guess gino terretta, ken dorsey, and QB after QB who won in college and had won heismans and couldn't even backup in the NFL were great ones as well? Take a good look Auburn had 3 players selected in the top 10 this guy was loaded with superior talent. |
Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
No, I see four winning seasons, each getting better than the last. I see a guy who has been around a bigtime college program with plenty of competition for the job but plays all four years. I see a guy who, dumb or not, went through four offensive coordinators in four years (something that a future redskin ought to be good at). Remember that plays got taken out of the palybook for Ramsey too.
Listen, all I am saying about Campbell is there is something to this guy that Gibbs likes. I'm willing to go along for the ride on this one. If he turns out to be the next Torreta then I will tip my hat to you. I just think that he should get a fair shake and he just may not turn out to be all that bad. BTW, did we really need another TE (maybe a little) or a UAB WR? |

Speaking of dumb.... How stupid is he? He's so stupid he followed Maurice Clarrett's lead and got to take a year off from football. All we needed was to draft a guy (Mike Williams) who wants to play outside the rules and make dumb choices. Team player? How hard do you think his contract negotiating will be? Look, if Ramsey does great, we could trade Campbell next year to a team in need for a proven wideout. If not, we have great depth and can get rid of Brunnel. |
Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
I would be willling to put $1000 on a bet that says if Ramsey does well he still leaves and Campbell takes over this team no matter what.

You might be right, but only if Gibbs thinks Campbell is a better player. There's no way Gibbs will let Ramsey get away if he has a Drew Brees season or two. I'm not buying this Wonderlic Test bullsh**. Somehow that's going to tell us how quickly he can read defenses? The bottom line is Campbell played in an offensive system last year that was very similar to Gibbs'. It's run first, ball-control, and attack deep when it's there. There was an H-Back to work with at times, and the blocking schemes were TE-heavy. Campbell mastered that one at Auburn to the tune of a perfect record. Sure his team was loaded with talent, especially at RB. But he can succeed in DC for the same reasons, he has Portis at RB and a sturdy O-line. All that said, I hope Ramsey has a Brees season and relegates Campbell to the bench. I think it makes sense to question the logic of picking a QB this year, but I don't think it makes sense to criticize Campbell as a player. He is clearly a good QB prospect. |
Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
campbell is supposed to be super accurate and he's run a similar system for 4 years, he's used to changing coordinators and his stats and W/L got better since he began playing college ball...
my only question was that i thought we could get a more immediate impact player at that spot... and if we really wanted campbell we could have traded into the 2nd round. |

Re: Boswell always makes me feel better...
Good read here, I really liked this part
The proof of the power of the Redskins' feelings for Rogers was that they picked him over Williams, USC's spectacular wide receiver, whose talents would have matched the team's obvious weaknesses. And, no doubt, have pleased more fans. Williams, in fact, would have been the quintessential Dan Snyder-style pick. After all, almost every major Deion Sanders signing or Steve Spurrier courtship of the Snyder era has been cheered by fans -- in the offseason. Then, as soon as the next season rolled around, the evidence proved once again that fans -- including owner-fans -- make the worst decisions. There could hardly be a better sign for the Redskins than if its fans weep that Williams wasn't grabbed or that the 25th pick was used on a player who may seldom set foot on the FedEx field for a couple of years. Go on, folks, have fun. Howl for Williams and the Player of Your Choice who was still on the board when Campbell was picked. But just factor into your thinking that Gibbs disagrees. Maybe he's wrong. But why bring him back and then not do it his way? "Mike Williams is going to be a heck of a player in the NFL," Gibbs said. "But because we could get Carlos [rather than Jones or Rolle], that made it even easier. He gives you everything in the cornerback package: speed, size and he's physical. He's a shut-down corner who will [also] hit you. For our defense, that's very important."
|
