Draft Reaction

Good Monday morning to everyone! Now that McC has closed the books on his first Skins draft what do you think? I'm feeling good because all the moves this free agency and the draft seem to have a theme of developing a big strong physical team. I think we addressed alot needs especially with the Oline and Special teams.

What pick did you like? Where do you have questions?

Schreff is probably the best pick and probably the safest pick of the draft. I think I will always watch Leonard Williams to see what he does, but no questions with Schreff...he will be a skilled, tone-setting type of player that will thrive.

My question is with Preston Smith, is he really an OLB in this D? I just dont see him being fast enough standing up rushing the passer; his value is more with his fingers in the dirt. Not questioning the talent, just the value of best use.

I think the Jaimson Crowder pick is really exciting and Kouandjio could be a steal if he knees can hold up.

Overall, really impressive

Re: Draft Reaction

AJ Cann went just a few spots before we picked Matt Jones, and Tre Jackson went just a few spots before we picked Kouandjio. We'll never know, but I am guessing Scot had his eyes on one of them and had to adjust on the fly when they got snatched. In the draft all you can do is play the hand you're dealt - I was glad to see he didn't panic and trade up.

I definitely like this draft a lot. I can't foresee a scenario where Scherff won't live up to expectations - he's a very safe pick which I like high in the draft.

On Preston Smith, no concerns. He's a carbon copy of Kerrigan in terms of height, weight, and his times in the 40, 3 cone, and shuttle. I have no problems at all with Ryan Kerrigan, that's for sure.

I would not assign Preston Smith to cover Zach Ertz, but I wouldn't assign that task to Ryan Kerrigan either. That's best left to Keenan or the safeties.

Thumbs up.

I like the traits McLovin prioritized. Even Crowder is a tough guy.

We got a punisher in the 3rd.

Smith is smart. He can transition.

some folks believe that we reached at pick #1 ..well the Giants were picking Schreff and the Skins knew this..so it had to be done. I love the draft we had..only time will tell for sure but at least there was a sense of purpose and a plan in this years draft!!

If it makes you feel better Walter Football has Kouandjio rated the same as McCann and Johnson.

Re: Draft Reaction

There is a school of thought that says you don't pick RTs or Gs high in the draft because they're not high impact positions. But what that leaves out is the basic laws of supply and demand. Brian Bulaga, a solid but not spectacular RT, got 7.5 million per year in free agency. While Stephen Paea, a solid but unspectacular DL, got $4M per year. Same with Terrance Knighton.

So I don't think the current NFL agrees that RT isn't an impact position, otherwise we wouldn't see these RTs getting paid so well. Have to be careful relying on the old tried and true thinking just for its own sake. That's how you find yourself behind the curve in a changing NFL.

Re: Draft Reaction

Love the draft. I think the first three picks set the tone and sent a clear message as to the type of team McC is building. Big and nasty. McC doesn't just want to win games, he wants to beat the other team up while doing so.

My favorite pick? P. Smith. Never heard of him before the draft but all I read is he is big, strong and mean. If he is a Kerrigan clone, I am really good with that. From what I saw, he is plenty fast enough to be an edge rusher. He may not have the speed of a Beasley but Beasley has to run further to get around the LT; Smith is going to take the short path and drive right through a few guys. Also, Terrell Suggs got knocked on his 40 time back in the day, and his response was, essentially, "I only gotta run 10 yards to get to the QB." I am hopeful that Smith is going to be a beast.

Sleeper pick? Not sure if it's a "sleeper," but I am betting Kouandjio is a Day 1 starter.

My only problem with the draft? Would have liked a safety or convertible corner rather than RB in the third, rather than WR in the 4th, or, again, rather than ILB in the 5th. At the same time, I like the picks taken in those spots and trust in in the McC. Just concerned that we did not really address the FS issue before the 6th round.

It does suck being in the same spot we've been at free safety - still no long term solution. But at the 3rd 4th and 5th rounds I can't remember myself looking at the available players and thinking 'oh there's a safety we need to draft.'

I'm really, really glad we landed Crowder. That's a player a lot of NFL teams have on their roster, and we just don't. It adds a whole new dimension. Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, St. Louis used Danny Amendola in the slot, and then you think of guys like Antonio Brown and TY Hilton who started off as slot guys and later transitioned to overall downfield weapons.

Overall I'm glad we didn't reach.

Re: Draft Reaction

Cole Beasley, another example. He's a little pain in the freakin ass. And Crowder probably has more upside than him.

Re: Draft Reaction

As to the Scherff pick, McC had him as the 3rd best prospect behind Fowler and Cooper so he is already, by his board, getting a value for Scherff. Also, I am betting Sherff would have been gone by the 9th pick (NYG). Who knows, maybe he was worried about a trade up by NYG. Thus, if he couldn't get a solid trade, and he considered the drop off at RT or BPA to be too big, then Scherff was the best balance of BPA/Need.

You can go a long way in this league with bookend tackles. Scherff may never be a premium LT and require payment at that level, but, as Schneed noted, good RT's require big bucks eventually. Plus, after watching his videos, I love the big nasty he brings.

Scherff and Williams set us up along the OL in a way we haven't been since the Jansen/Samuels days back in the early 2000's. That's a good thing.

I think with Smith it was more about getting a good football player and finding out where to put him. He's probably more of a 4-3 end so maybe they'll put his hand in the dirt on passing downs. Maybe they move him around.

Hard to argue with drafting Schreff. We need a big, physical guy that brings attitude. We're just way too soft on the O-line. I like that pick a lot. No complaints there.

Love the 4th rounder as well. Didn't like that we had a chance to get Lockett, but we got Crowder who can do the same things plus got those extra picks.

My one real issues was Jones. Don't have a problem taking a back, but Jones just didn't have the production, plus he doesn't catch out of the backfield. Just thought that was a reach. He could've been had in the 5th round.

Overall, this was a more than solid draft and a job well done. Now we need to see these guys in pads.

Re: Draft Reaction

I really wanted Tre' Jackson, so it bugged me that the Skins felt the need to take Crowder first in that round. Lo and behold, the Pats got Jackson one pick before we made our second pick in the round. It would be nice to know that SM would have taken Arie over Jackson, anyway.

I love the video I've seen on Martrel Spaight. I have the feeling he's going to be "spaighting" people for the B&G for many years.

NO Flash.....NO Style points......NO winning the offseason...
JUST Heartbreakers and Lifetakers (thank you Clint)
Most importantly, I did not have to Sell Myself on this being a great draft for this team and that we are indeed on the path to recovery.
I thank you SM

We hit on some big needs, got some big physical types with some attitude, and I think improved special teams with the later round picks. Time will tell of course but I liked what we got done. It's nice to finally have a grown-up in charge with a plan.
