I moved this to the Locker Room forum because I thought it might be fun to discuss.

This agreement has a lot of interesting quirks. For example to achieve a $1.6 million performance incentive LaVar must participate in 98% of all special teams play....somehow I don't see that happening

This is outstanding - however, the Post reported this thing settled once before, I believe. I'll pop the corks once the team or Arrington announces it.

Personally, I don't like this at all. If Arrington has 2 pro bowl seasons, thus making him eligible to void his contract in 2007, what incentive is there for him to NOT say he wants to void it. If he voids it, we'd have to pay another 3.5 million to keep him. Otherwise he leaves for free agency after 2 pro bowl seasons to get paid again elsewhere. The flip side, of course, is that if he doesn't make the pro bowl he stays here for the remainder of his contract (in theory, at least). Shouldn't we have put something in there saying he owes us back 3.5 million if he doesn't make the Pro Bowl in 2 of the next four seasons??? Fair is fair...

I'm a bit confused by the whole Pro Bowl thing. He has to make two pro bowls in the next four years to be eligible to void his contract after 2007 (which is within 3 years)...something doesn't add up

I'm just glad it's over and he can get back to "focusing" on football.

Here's how I interpret the deal:

He can void his contract as early as 2007 if he makes the Pro Bowl twice in the next 4 seasons. So basically, if he makes it in 2005 and 2006, he can opt to void his contact and become a free agent in the '07 season. BUT, the Skins will have the option to keep him by paying him $3.25M.

Forget about the $1.6M bonus, that's just window dressing to satisfy some sort of salary cap rule.

Tafkas, I am with you on the "fuzzy" math on this whole deal, but the jest of the deal seems to be what I thought would happen. They have written the amendment in such a way as to give him more money but not $6.5 million more. It is kind of a compromise. Some of the things like the 98% Special Teams he will not achieve, but other things he should be able to do. I just hope it all settles itself out before we the Skins play the Bears on the 11th.

There is definitely a double edged sword feel to this contract, like all sports contract. There is always incentive driven language to ensure the player doesn't just crap out after he gets paid, since he would be very difficult to get rid of secondary to cap hit. There is a large payday if he plays well. I'm hopeful the redskins start minding the cap this year better than they have.

Arrington should have just sued his dumb ass agent Carl Poston for this whole mess. The phantom 6.5 million bonus was never in any of the contract draft proposals, and the Redskins had the draft contracts to prove it. According to profootballtalk.com Poston ADMITTED that he failed to read the final contract before instructing Arrington to sign it. This was basically the Skins, at Gibbs' insistence, trying to keep the face of the franchise happy. Don't get me wrong, Im a big LaVar fan, forking out for 2 of his jerseys, but he is an underachiever and as long as Williams sticks around our Defense will be just fine with or without him.

I like this deal.

If he makes the Pro Bowl a couple times he'll void his huge contract and become a free agent and everyone is happy (especially the Skins). It seems to me like both sides would be happy to part ways after 2007.

Provisions for this contract that happen in four years are all but irrelevant. The contract will either have been reworked by then, or it will be time for Lavar to leave anyway.

If he is a monster the next two years we will keep him, he will remain one of our highest paid guys

My feeling is if Lavar does actually make a couple pro bowls and decides to void the contract, we won't pay that extra $3M to keep him. The only way we pay to keep him is if he's played outstanding and we are very close to a super bowl.

And I'm not a Lavar hater, just the way I see it.

I could see that happening too.

It would definitely take a huge contract off the team's hands. By then he'll be 30 or older and in at least his 8th year in the league.

Could be a convenient time for both sides to move on.

But who knows, if the team is winning and he's playing at a high level...
