this might be a little late re the signing of barnett but i went to a bills fan forum to see what they said and this one guy gives some good insight imo plus the "stand there until something happens" line re their D scheme was pretty damn funny

Re: Redskins sign Barnett
I like Barnett, he played 90 some percent of the snaps in a ridiculously rigid incompetent defense with the only other linebacker, if there was one being Scott, who if he wasn't a linebacker on the play was surely the db backing Barnett in coverage because he was so essentially vital to Wannstedt's "do the same stuff every play because I am confused" defense.
The coverage was essentially "you stand there until something happens or you run at them if you think other stuff is happening", a key way to use an lb in his 30's who is the only linebacker linebacking but you insist runs right when all the opponent tight ends run left, or left when they run right, then note his stats were not up to par.
Barnett wasn't the problem, none of them were, not even Scott, the defense was, and I wouldn't be real surprised to see Barnett do well for a few more years.
But come on, stop this "Barnett was bad" stuff. He played over 90 percent of the snaps and the next closest LB who wasn't an LB was Scott less than 60%. Barnett, who he is, played the whole season in a Wannstedt nickel. He's not God's gift to linebackers, but he was hardly so bad being a 30 something lb who wasn't going to suddenly become Lawrence Taylor in his prime, and no one in their right mind thought we were getting Taylor in his prime to begin with, but it's trendy to say he did poorly for not being superman on a Wannstedt defense.
Good luck to Nick Barnett.
