Padre Pio in fact was an example of a problem with most supposed stigmatists: they get the wounds wrong. The Romans crucified through the wrist, not the palms, since hand bones are not strong enough to hold up the body. In the Middle Ages artists began depicting the wounds in the wrong place, the palms. Thus stigmatists who have bleeding hands and palms are imitating art, not the true life Jesus.
