From what I understand, Payton stated his opinion... that Graham isn't a WR. Which I agree with. But he's also not a TE.
I think Graham is more in the right than the Saints, because as PFT
points out(I know, it's PFT, but still), the Saints' and the NFL's position would hypothetically allow teams to line up the Grahams of the league 100% of the time in the slot and still not pay them WR money. Hybrid TEs/jokers aren't TEs, nor are they WRs; designate a new position, call it a joker or whatever, and put the franchise tag number in the middle, around 9 million. Outside receivers have more market value, but Graham would also get more money in the open market than a traditional TE. Seems like the most logical solution to me.
I think Graham comes across looking like an a** to a lot of people, but I don't see anything wrong with him wanting to get paid fairly for what he does. The franchise tag system being faulty isn't his fault.
