A first offense will lead to a six-game suspension, a second offense will lead to "banishment from the NFL." (Although, interestingly enough, the "banishment from the NFL" is subject to appeal after a year, so despite the fact that many media have used the term, calling this a lifetime ban is inaccurate.) The NFL is setting a more stringent standard for player behavior than has ever existed in any professional sports league.

Sucks that it took Ray Rice knocking out his fiance to get this through though. The part that scares me though is was it implemented because they realized it was the right thing to do or was it more a business decision? It's kind of sick when rules promoting the most basic of social conduct are only passed because someone in a suit was scared of making less money.
I will say this though, I give credit to Goodell for admitting he was wrong. I've never had to do it myself but I understand its quite difficult.

“My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families,” Goodell said in a statement. “I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn’t get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will.”
