But to my knowledge, the officials have never interpreted the rule that way when a player extends the ball over the goal line with two hands on it.

This is a bad call, like the Calvin Johnson (no TD) call, like the replacement refs call in the GB/Seattle game TD call. Technically correct, but misinterpreted. And those other calls were called bad for what they were. If the refs started calling holding on our OL every play, which they could do to any line, it would be a bad call too. But I guess we are used to just taking it now.
