Yes you are paying several million more in the first year, but you are also essentially buying quarterback insurance.
Once the tag is placed the whole amount counts as guaranteed and against the cap.

Most players reportedly hate the franchise tag, so you could be setting up a hard feelings negotiation where after the tags are done he wants to go somewhere else. My guess is that if we tag him, it would need to be done in the context of trying to get a long term deal done.
