Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I really, really want Johnathan Hankins. I am Googling "Redskins Hankins" just about every 10 minutes hoping for news.
But that said, the fact that Hankins left to ponder his options is a good thing. It's a sign that the Redskins aren't coming at free agents with offers that blow away the market, causing them to take the deal on the spot.
That was the model in the 2000s and it resulted in some horrendous overpayments and we all know the history.
I happen to think that if you see guys sign during their free agent visit, it's probably not a good sign. The fact that Scandrick signed yesterday during the visit was a sign of overpayment - his offer was so good that he said 'know what it's not even worth taking other visits.' And now that we all see it's 2 years and $10M, we're all scratching our heads a bit.
Remember, DeSean Jackson left Redskins Park after his visit. But he signed with us (and the price was right). We should hope for that with Hankins. Just because he left doesn't mean we're not still the best offer.
If Hankins gets away from us, that will cheese me for sure because we really NEED his skill set. But I can't fault Bruce Allen for making offers in line with the market. We'll see if he lets this fish get away - paying a little more than market value would be worth it in this case, because our need is so much bigger than most teams.
If he takes another visit, if I'm Bruce I'm bringing my last best and final offer right then and there over the phone.
