non HD tvs do not resolve HD signals. The HD signal is actually converted to a normal analog signal which cannot appear pixelated or digital in any way except....
If the station from which you receive a broadcast signal has technical difficulties and the signal the tv actually receive is actually corrupted then the converted analog signal will be an analog interpretation of a screwed up digital feed. You should not have noticed any difference in appearance between a normal game feed and the digital feed since your tv cannot even read it. I am thinking your mind and eyes are playing tricks on you.
