Yeah this is the right big picture perspective. Also, because they didn't sign someone via free agency, this deal won't count against them in the compensatory pick formula.
If they signed Teddy Bridgewater say for $8M per season, then Crowder leaving for $8M per season wouldn't net them a compensatory pick because they balance out in the formula.
It's one more way to get an advantage with compensatory picks: acquire players via trade without giving up much. Also, sign guys who were cut this year as opposed to signing guys who left due to expiring contracts. That also boosts your chances in the compensatory formula.
