The problem is your regular average joe like myself is not willing to speak up to drown out the crazies on both sides of the aisle, who tend to speak the loudest. And when all the media coverage on both sides of the aisle tends to focus on whatever nonsense the extremists are spewing, you start to believe their massively outnumbered position reflects the entire opposition as a whole.
