looking at deaths per million the US lines up with most of Europe (Germany being the notable exception - but they are a heavily disciplined state that believes in "ordnung" above all) stats from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

UK - 1,004 per
Italy - 1,156 per
Spain - 1,054 per
France - 932 per
USA - 986 per.

My point is not to praise or criticize, but only to point out that most multicultural freer Nations have been hard hit by this. We as a country were never going to go full lockdown, and we weren't not going to get hit.

a side note the us population is 331million approximately, we have conducted 237 million tests. I know I was tested 3 times total when I had an active case of it, so it is not a 1 to 1 number, but it also is a substantial amount.
