I think I get the point : you can never know for sure if a QB is gonna pan out or not, but having a good QB on his rookie contract is a great situation to be in. So right now, not giving away any assets and giving yourself a chance with a kid that showed he has potential is the best long term option. How it actually pans out doesn't change the parameters of the situation at the point you made the decision.
And I agree with this approach. We may have a franchise QB on the roster, for free, so why gamble assets on something we may not need to buy in the first play ? Especially with the sale and probable change of HC coming up in the near future, I don't want Ron to make any huge future impacting moves.
