One thing that shouldn’t be overlooked is the quality of coaches he had on the team. Gibbs doesn’t have a coaching tree because he surrounded himself with proven coaches like Joe Bugel, Pettibon, Peccatiello and Wayne Sevier (San Diego Native!). Charley Taylor was a WRs coach!
Rivera surrounded himself with bums and it shows.
