i think the punch vs. spit argument goes astray from "legal" precedent and more towards playground rules. in football, spitting is worse than most of the stuff out there. punching is bad, but nearly all players understand the retaliation to a spit. did you all see the reaction of the skins players when carey told them pittman only punched after taylor spit? they were like, "oh, ok" and they stopped arguing. even our own players understood why pittman wasn't punished.

outside of legal terms, i take spitting as a complete sign of disrespect. in a courtroom, a punch is probably going to be worse. but on the street, getting spit on means you're lower than life- not even a human being. and the football field goes by playground ethics more than common law. players getting tackled is a form of controlled violence, legal in the courtroom sense. but when it comes to a private entity, such as the nfl, playground rules are accepted by both refs and players.
