Bernard has above average athletic ability, good quickness and strength. He has good agility, lateral movement and initial quickness of the ball. He has an explosive first step, he has good change of direction skills and he plays with decent leverage. He does a good job of anchor the point of attack when he plays low. He does a good of shooting the inside gap and he can be disruptive in the backfield. He does a nice job of keeping his feet down the line, he takes good angles while pursuing the ball and he has good overall speed for a defensive tackle. He has good power and strength to push the pocket on pass rush. He keeps his feet moving and he has good closing speed to the QB. However, Bernard motor does not run full speed all the time, he not consistent in his effort and he lacks a good work ethic and does not bust his ass to the ball all the time. He plays high when he is tired and lineman is able to get under his pads and knock him off the ball. He is undersize and will get engulf when he does not play with good technique. He does not have a variety of pass rush moves and if he can not beat you with his first step, he gets stalemated at the line of scrimmage. Overall, Bernard will make plays when he fresh. He is a good backup who can come off the bench and give your starters a rest with quality reps. He is a good overall pass rusher that will get your attention when he is fresh. His upside is he is young and he should only get better with more experience.
