Brunell starts because he has the experience to read defenses and make the right decision on the play. First and second year QBs get "played" by good NFL defenses. It didn't help Alex Smith to start in San Francisco as a rookie. The Niners would have won a few more games with Tim Rattay, even if Rattay has less talent than Smith. Young quarterbacks are almost always better off if they can get tutored and study film their first two or three seasons before they are regular starters.

NOT a knock on Campbell, just a comment on his experience. In another season, Patrick Ramsey is going to be a fine quarterback for someone.
